Key learning points

  1. When tackling listening questions, knowledge of vocabulary is the most important element of success.
  2. Before a listening task, read the questions carefully and predict relevant voabulary.
  3. During listening, avoid distractors by not rushing to select the answer.
  4. On completion of the listening, check answers against the questions.
  5. In conversation, develop answers by adding opinions and reasons, varying the subject, and adding different time frames.

Keywords

  • Prediction - strategy that involves anticipating what the answers might be by listing relevant words or phrases

  • Distractor - incorrect but plausible answer option in reading and listening tasks, designed to test your attention to detail

Common misconception

You can only succeed in listening comprehension if you know all the vocabulary.

Whilst vocabulary knowledge is the most important element for success, other strategies can help, for example, close pre-reading of the questions, predicting vocabulary, avoiding distractors and checking answers carefully.
