Hi there.

My name's Mr. Bryne Smith and today are going to be doing some English together.

For today's lesson, we're going to look in detail at the appearance of our mysterious deep sea creature, the Anglerfish.

We're going to take some notes on its appearance.

So it will be in a really good position to write all about it in our non-chrono report.

Okay.

Let's make a start.

Here's the agenda for today's lesson.

First, we'll have a quick introduction during which we'll think about where you need to go in order to get information about a particular subject.

Then we'll have a go at research and note taking before finally having a go at our task.

In this lesson, you will need an exercise book or paper, a pencil and then of course your brain.

So if you need to go off and get any of these things, pause the video now.

Introduction.

So the question is, how could we find out information about angerlfish for our non-chronological rapport? Our non-chronological report is all about this beast of the deep, the anglerfish.

But where do we go in order to find information about it? It needs to be accurate.

It needs to be correct because the whole point is that we're informing other people.

So we need to make sure we gathering accurate information about this fish.

Where might we go? Pause the video and have a think.

Okay I've come up with three main sources of information for the anglerfish.

Texts, videos, and websites.

So when I say texts, I refer to other books and articles about this fish.

Videos, lots of which can be found online are also really informative, especially those made in nature documentaries.

For example, David Attenborough produces lots of really fantastic videos, all about the animal kingdom.

Finally websites.

There are lots of websites, some of which are dedicated to creatures of the deep sea.

These are all also very informative when it comes to learning about the anglerfish.

Now, today we're going to focus on gathering information from other texts.

However, if you'd like to do some extra research at home, you can use any of these three resources.

So here's our creature, the anglerfish.

Remember it lives in the deep ocean.

We're going to think today about its appearance in particular.

We're going to gather notes, some of them will be general, some of them will be specific.

And those specific notes will be about the anglerfishes appearance.

That means what it looks like.

So let's have a go at some research and note-taking.

First of all, we're going to look for general information that we can use in our opening paragraph.

Here's a non-chrono rapport.

And just as a quick reminder, that's the opening.

It comes right at the beginning and it contains general facts about the animal.

After the opening, you generally have the main paragraphs, you might have one or two or three of these.

We're going to have three, one about appearance, one about diet, one about habitat.

Before finally our closing.

Today we're going to put together notes for our opening, some general notes for our opening and some more specific notes for our appearance.

So that's the first of our three main paragraphs.

We are not looking at a diet today and we're not looking at habitat today and we're not looking up at our closing today.

So here's our anglerfish.

Now we have a text from which we can draw some really nice, broad, general key facts that we can put in an opening.

Here's our text.

I'm going to read it out loud.

And then I'm going to give you the opportunity to seek out the most useful facts that we can pinch and use in our own report.

The anglerfish is a member of the lophiiformes family.

It is found in the harsh depths of some of the Earth's oceans, Atlantic and Antarctic.

Interestingly, the female is much larger than the male of the species.

The largest anglerfish weigh up to 50 kilogrammes and measure up to one metre.

Furthermore, they have a variety of fascinating adaptations to help them survive the deep ocean.

Despite this, this unique creature is under threat due to increased human activity in the oceans.

So within this paragraph, there are lots of facts, some of which will be very appropriate for our opening paragraph.

Now we're not opening paragraph, it's important that we don't get too specific.

There'll be lots of opportunity to later on in the report, to provide specific information about key details of the anglerfish.

For now, we're just going to be general in the things we extract.

Here, I've highlighted some of the key features of this text.

I think these are the things that we can extract and pinch to use in our own writing.

You can see I've highlighted 'lophiiformes' which is the Latin name, the family of fish to which the anglerfish belongs.

You can see that it's been put in Italics which means it's slanted slightly.

This is a technique often used with the Latin name of animals, any animal.

I've also highlighted, 'harsh depth of some of the Earth's oceans, Atlantic and Antarctic'.

I think that's a really nice general fact about where these fish are found that we could definitely make use of.

I've also highlighted, 'female is much larger'.

I think that's a great fact.

There's nothing too specific there, but I think it's something that we can make use of.

Same goes for the maximum weight and length of each fish, 50 kilogrammes, and one metre.

We also have the, 'variety of fascinating adaptations'.

And then we have that reference at the end there, 'under threat because of human activity'.

I think that's a really easy combination that we can extract.

I mean, take out and combine.

So the next task is to note these down.

In this instance, I've already extracted the key facts.

I've highlighted them and it's very clear which things we need to make use of.

So your job is to note them down.

Now we need to note them down in a way that is easy to use.

These notes are going to be used later in a unit to do some actual writing.

So they need to be clear and easily accessible.

Therefore, I recommend creating a title that says opening and writing your notes underneath that title.

Now writing notes is a really important skill and it's very important that you practise it.

When you make notes, it's not necessary to write every word in a sentence.

The sentence does not need to be grammatically correct like an ordinary sentence would be.

When you take notes, you're just including the key information.

That way you can note things down quickly, but effectively.

I let you to have a go now, and then I'm going to show you what I did in a second.

Let's have a look at how I've made notes out of these key facts.

So general opening information.

Member of the 'Lophiiformes' family, Latin.

That does not make grammatical sense as a sentence of its own.

It's not a sentence, it's not a full sentence.

It's a note.

And therefore it doesn't have to make sense.

It's very clear what information is contained within this note.

And therefore, if I use this to write a sentence, it would be very effective.

Habitat equals depth of Antarctic and Atlantic oceans.

All the key info.

Female larger than male.

Weight equals up to 50 kilos.

Langth equals up to one metre.

Again, I have all the key information and I can easily turn these notes into full, complete, and flowing sentences.

Variety of adaptations, under threat because of humans.

Two more examples of how you can extract just the key information, which can later be turned into complete sentences.

Okay.

Let's have a look at the appearance paragraph.

So the anglerfish has a peculiar appearance, we know that.

Here we have a new picture of the anglerfish with its peculiar lure on its head.

Now this is a word that's going to come up again and again.

So we'll soon get used to it.

Lure.

L-U-R-E.

It has some other really distinctive features, which we're going to get to know in this next paragraph.

Appearance.

We're going to extract some notes and key information from this text.

First, I'm going to read it out loud.

Anglerfish are named after their method of 'fishing' for their prey.

They do this using a bioluminescent lure that protrudes from the head and is modified into a 'fishing rod' tipped with a fleshy bait.

Prey are attracted to this lure and stray close enough for the anglerfish to swallow them.

In addition to their lure, anglerfish have highly developed eyesight.

This feature allows them to navigate along the pitch-black sea floor and hunt unsuspecting prey.

Wow, okay.

There's loads of information there.

And there's also some really nice vocabulary.

Some of which we can and will pinch for ourselves.

So the first thing to get our head around is the key information.

Which facts are essential? Which fact do we absolutely not want to miss.

They're the ones we're going to highlight.

They're the ones we're going to keep.

I'm going to give you a chance now to have a think about the key facts that you think we should absolutely keep.

So I've highlighted the fact that I think are so super important that we can't let them go.

'Fishing', this whole reference to fishing.

They're called anglerfish, now angling is another word for fishing.

An angler is another word for somebody who fishes, like a fisherman or a fisherman.

Therefore the term anglerfish refers to how they fish.

And they do this using a lure on the head.

Lure is an interesting word.

It's a noun, but it's also a verb, which means to attract something towards you.

The anglerfish have a lure on their head, which is 'bioluminescence'.

I've highlighted this word because I think it's so fantastic.

If something is luminescent, it means it glows in the dark.

If something is bioluminescent, it means it's something that's natural that glows in the dark.

The anglerfish has a lure on its head, which glows in the deep dark depths of the ocean.

These attracts or lures creatures towards it.

When the creatures are close enough, the anglerfish can swallow them up.

So it's a very, very clever adaptation that the anglerfish has to help it eat.

I've highlighted the term 'protrudes'.

This is a lovely, lovely verb which means stick out from.

If you have something that protrudes from your head, it means you have something sticking out from your head.

You might say, elephants have a trunk protruding from their head.

Similarly, you might say anglerfish have a lure protruding from their head.

This is what's being referred to as a fishing rod because it's this, that baits or attracts the prey towards the awaiting jaws of the anglerfish, I've also highlighted the 'highly developed eyesight' because I think that is key.

That is a feature.

That's the kind of feature that we can describe in a number of sentences.

So if we were to ignore that and not include it, we'd be missing out on lots of really, really cool information about the anglerfish and how they survive in the depth of the ocean.

I've highlighted what the eyesight for.

Navigating and hunting.

We also have this lovely phrase at the end, 'unsuspecting'.

The prayer unsuspecting because they don't expect what's going to happen.

If you're unsuspecting, you have no idea about what's about to happen to you.

Now, I'd like you to use the highlighted information, to make some notes about the appearance of our anglerfish.

Once again, it is necessary to create a title for yourself.

So that you'll note it very, very, very clear for when we come to use them for our writing.

Under this title, I'll like you to create some short, simple, but effective notes about the information found within this paragraph.

Let's have a look at the notes that I've created.

So, named after method of fishing.

Bioluminescent lure protruding from head Lure attracts unsuspecting prey.

Highly developed eyesight.

That I didn't forget it, I thought that was so important, that one.

Eyesight allows them to navigate sea floor and hunt.

So what we have here is we have two features and what there for.

Two features and what there for.

That gives us lots and lots to say.

We'll need to write an entire paragraph about the anglerfish's appearance, but each of these notes can be expanded into a number of sentences.

So we will have plenty of things to say.

There's the lure that we've been discussing.

So you can see the tip of the lure, which is a little blob.

That's what glows, that's what's bioluminescence.

Of course we could describe it as glowing or bioluminescent or shining.

It glows because of bacteria that's contained within the end of the lure.

It's very, very clever.

Here's some examples of bioluminescence.

These two creatures live in the depths of the ocean, and you can see that both bioluminescence.

So they glow in the dark.

Bioluminescent with a T at the end, is the adjective.

Bioluminescence is the noun.

So when I talk about bioluminescence, I'm talking about this glowing nature.

Okay.

Time for our task.

I'd like you to first draw an image of an anglerfish.

And the key here is to think about those features that really jump out.

I'm thinking the lure, the teeth, the eyes, they're the ones I think you need to pay most attention to because they are so key.

Once you've drawn your anglerfish, I'd like you to annotate your drawing with key fact about its appearance.

Annotate is another word for label.

So you might label its lure, with key facts about what it is and what it does.

Using of course, your notes.

You might want to label it's eyes or its teeth with key facts about what they do.

Using of course, your notes.

If you have a fact that's general about the anglerfish, you can annotate drawing away from its body.

So for each of your annotations, you should be drawing clear lines pointing to what we're discussing.

Like I say, if you're talking about the general anglerfish fact, and you could just draw a line coming away from its body.

Think carefully about what you consider to be the key aspect of this fish's appearance.
