Hi, everyone, how are you? I'm Miss Mitchell and today in Maths we're going to be describing the position of an object.

In today's lesson, we'll be looking at the positioning of objects, you will then complete a talk task, an independent task and then a quiz.

For today's lesson, you will need a pencil and some paper.

Pause the video now to get this if you have not got it already.

So, today we have some star words.

So star words are special words that we're going to be seeing a lot of in today's lesson.

They're also words that I would like you to also use.

So our star wards for today are the words on, can you say on, next to, in front of, left, right, behind and under.

Okay, so these are all positional language.

So here I have two words, the first one says position.

Now the meaning of the word position is describing where something is.

So when we're using the word position, or when I asked you to tell me the position of something you're describing where something is.

There's also a second word down here which says, direction.

Now direction means the line or course in which something is going.

So position where something is, direction, the line or course in which something is going.

Okay, so here is a picture of some people at the supermarket.

What I would like you to do, I would like you to tell me what objects you can see and can you describe their position.

So let's do a couple together.

So for example, I can see the child is next to the adults.

The child is next do the adults.

Let's do another one together.

The TV is on top of the shelf.

The TV is on top of the shelf.

So what I would like you to do, I would like you to pause the video now and can you tell me what objects you can see and can you describe their position using the star words.

Now what would be really great if you can try and use every single star word.

Now with the word left and right, I have a little trick that I like to use and you might know it already.

I count the left and the right, what I like to use and you may already know it, is our fingers.

So what I like to do if I always get, if I ever get confused, I make an L with my hand.

So I can see that the shape that makes the L is my left hand.

So this is left.

And the shape that doesn't make the L is right.

So this is the right way.

So can you now put your fingers out like this, and you should see that one of them will make an L and then point to your left.

Fantastic, and then your other one, your other hand will not make an L so that means that is your right.

Now remember, I'm facing the camera, so your left and right will be different to me.

So just look at your hands and then you'll know which is your left and which is your right, okay.

So pause the video now to tell me what you can see and to describe their position, try and use every single star word.

Well done, did you manage to use all your star words? Now let's do some together, trying to use all of the star words.

So my start first start word is On.

So I could say the oranges are on the counter.

The oranges are on the counter.

My second star word is the word next to.

And I've used that one already.

The child is next to the adults.

The child is next to the adults.

Okay my third star word is the word, in front of.

The lady is in front of the counter.

The lady is in front of the counter.

So we can always swap that over and say the counter is behind the lady.

So the lady is in front of the counter, but the counter is behind the lady.

Okay lets think of has anyone thought of one for the word under, under.

So, for under, I can say that the tuna is under the cornflakes.

The tuna is under or below the cornflakes.

So, again I can reverse that and I can say the cornflakes are above, is above the tuna, the cornflakes is above the tuna.

Okay, my next star word is the word in between.

So for the word in between, I might say, the bottle is in between the child and the lady.

The bottle, so it's like in the middle.

The bottle is in between the lady and the child.

Fantastic.

Now, below is another word for under.

So we've already said that the tuna is under, no, the tuner is below the cornflakes.

Now the word left, I might say, the clock is left of the sign, the clock is left of the sign.

And then for right, I might say the TV is right of the sign.

The TV is right of the sign.

Now, I would like you to complete a talk task.

So I'm going to read the instructions below and I'd like you to have a go at drawing them.

So I'll read all four instructions, and then pause the video to draw the instructions.

So number one, draw a cat under the cakes, draw a cat under the cakes.

Number two, draw a man next to a pizza.

Draw a man next to pizza.

Number three, draw a dog above a man.

Draw a dog above a man.

And for number four, draw some apples below a pizza.

Draw some apples below a pizza.

Can you now pause the video to draw these instructions.

And here are some examples of the answers.

Now obviously your drawings may look a little different to this, but this is just an idea of what you should have drawn.

So for your independent task what I would like you to do, I would like you to look at the picture that we looked at together earlier.

And I would like you to fill in the gap using the correct positional words please.

So using these words down here, can you please pick one to fill in the gap to make the sentence correct.

Pause the video now and press play when you are ready for the answers.

And here are the answers.

Pause the video now to check if your answers are the same as mine.

Well done for today you worked really really hard.

If you'd like to share your work with Oak National, please ask your parent or carer to share your work on Twitter tagging @OakNational and #LearnwithOak.

Now let's see what you can remember by completing the quiz.

Well done for today.

Hope to see you soon, bye.
