Hello, everybody.

It is so lovely to see you.

Thank you for opening up your design and technology lesson for today.

My name is Miss Larham and I'm your design and technology teacher.

Last lesson I told you that my favourite animal is a giraffe.

I was wondering to introduce yourself to me today, would you be able to tell me what your favourite animal is? Brilliant, can you tell me now? Fantastic choice, I really like that animal as well.

Now, shall we get started with today's lesson? Fantastic, we've got a busy lesson ahead of us.

So let's get going.

Today we're going to be completing lesson seven in our textiles unit where we have been learning all about templates and joining techniques.

But today, we're going to explore finishing techniques.

Let's see what equipment you will need, because there's lots of things I need you to get for me today.

In this lesson, you will need some cheap fabric.

So just like we've talked about before, this could be some recycled fabric such as old clothing or old bedding, it could be even an old dishcloth if you wanted it to be.

You need a computer or device and you need some scissors.

And remember, because we're using scissors today, we must be supervised by a parent or a carer.

We also need a needle and thread and because we're using needles today, again, we need to be supervised by a parent or a carer.

I wonder, do you have any fabric pens or paint you could use today? And do you have any components? No components means anything that you could use to decorate your puppet panel with.

So buttons, beads, sequins, feathers, pompoms, tape, other bits of fabric, anything that you could use to decorate with.

There's lots of things to get today, cheap fabric, computer or device, scissors, needle and thread, fabric pens and paint and lots of different things called components that we can collect to decorate with.

So now's the time to pause the video and go and collect everything you need and then you can press play when you're ready.

I'll see you really soon, off you go.

Welcome back, thank you for collecting everything we need.

This just shows how busy our lesson is going to be today.

Let's get started.

Let's take a look at our lesson journey for today.

So first, all together, we're going to do our intro quiz.

Then we're going to recap our previous lessons, followed by our star words.

Then this is where we're going to be very busy with all our practical work, we're going to explore finishing techniques.

Then we're going to adapt our final design, so don't forget you'll need that final design page from last lesson to help you today.

And finally, all together, we will do our exit quiz.

That sounds like a busy lesson, doesn't it? We'd better get started.

It is time for our intro quiz.

So put on your thinking cap, put it on ready, draw it tight, super.

Let's see what we can remember from our previous lessons.

I'm going to ask you two questions.

Question number one, can you remember one way that we can join two pieces of fabric together? We know four, can you think of one way we can join fabric together? Have some time to think.

Are you ready to tell me one way we can join fabric? Fantastic, I heard some of you say more than one idea.

That's amazing.

So you might have said sewing, stapling, glueing , or pinning.

Well done if you said any of those, that's amazing.

My next question is a challenge question, you must do some really good remembering.

What is it called when we make a model so we can try out our ideas using cheaper materials? Give you a clue, it starts with this letter here, M.

What's it called when we make a model, try out our ideas, cheaper materials, few more seconds to think.

So if you know it, can you tell me? If you said mockup, well done.

That's amazing remembering.

So when we make a model to try out our ideas using cheaper materials that is called a mockup.

Well done, superstars.

We have done so much learning in this unit so far, but let's have a really quick recap of some of the things that we have done.

We can join fabric using lots of different techniques.

We also have started our final design page.

Do you have this with you now? Because we're going to need it today.

We then had a go at making a mockup, didn't we? We made a paper version of our final design and we came across some problems. Some of you might have, I definitely did.

I found out that it was too narrow and I couldn't get my finger and my thumb in the wings to make it into a puppy.

So I've made those notes on there.

And then last lesson, we had an explore, didn't we, at making pattern pieces.

So we used this paper template, reminding ourselves that our hand had to fit inside to make pattern pieces.

So we used chalk, we used pins, and we used clear sellotape and we decided and noted down on our final design which one we liked the best and which one we're going to use.

So we're going to carry on that journey together now and see what we're going to do next.

It is time to go through our star words, give your hands a flash.

Excellent, I'm going to say star words in my big voice and then it will be your turn, star words! Your turn.

Very loud.

Let's see what our first star word is, my turn.

So, your turn.

Well done, so.

Fantastic, we've had a go at sewing, haven't we, using our needle and our thread doing our running stitch.

So sewing is where we join two pieces of fabric together with stitches.

Next star word, my turn, finishing techniques.

Your turn.

Finishing techniques.

Well done, now that's what we're learning about today, finishing techniques.

And these are different ways that we can decorate our product to make the appearance look much better.

Next star word, applique.

Applique.

Well done, tricky word, applique.

Now, applique is a type of finishing technique.

Don't worry if you haven't heard about it, because I'm going to teach you all about applique in a little while.

Last star word, components, your turn.

Components.

Well done, and you've heard me say the word components already today, haven't you? And you probably have lots of components next to you now.

They're all the things that we could use to decorate our puppet panel today, so you might have some buttons and beads and sequins and pompoms and feathers, some different types of fabrics, they're all different components.

Well done on your star words.

It is time for the main part, the practical part of our lesson where we're going to be exploring finishing techniques.

Now we know what finishing techniques are, don't we? We know that there are ways that we can decorate our product, our puppets, to make the appearance look much better.

Now don't worry, we're not making our final real puppet today, again, we're going to be working in a mockup.

Do you remember the word mockup? I thought you did.

We're just making a model.

We're just trying out our ideas.

So for this today, we only need one panel, one pattern piece.

We don't need a front and a back, we're just going to practise putting finishing techniques on the front of our puppet.

Now, by the end, our puppet might actually look a little bit strange, a little bit funny because one eye might be a button and the other eye might be a googly eye.

One side of your puppet might have feathers and the other side might have fabric.

It's going to look really funny, but it's okay, 'cause we're just trying out our ideas, finding which ones we like the best.

Now, before we get started with exploring our finishing techniques, we need to make sure we have a pattern piece to work on.

So I've got a few questions that we need to think about before we get started with that task.

What animal is your puppet based on? So my puppet is based on a parrot.

What animal is your puppet based on? Can you tell me now? You should know this confidently.

Thank you for telling me your zoo animal that your puppet is based on.

What shape will you make your template? So do you remember when we had a go at drawing out different animal-shaped templates? Because this is just a simple glove puppet template.

If you want it to look more like your chosen animal, you had to add on some of those special features, didn't you? So when you make your pattern piece today, it'd be really great if you can make it the same shape as the animal you want your puppet to be.

The last thing I want you to think about when you make your template for your pattern piece today, what do we know about seam allowances? Now do you remember when we are making our paper template that it needs to be bigger than our hand? If I made this template the exact same size as my hand, when we put our row of joining techniques on, it makes it even smaller to put our hand in.

So we need to make sure that we make it wider than our hand so when we put in our row of stitches or staples or glues or pins, we can still fit our hand inside.

Shall I show you me making my parrot template and then it'll be your turn? Yeah, let's do that.

So I've got my puppet design here to help me with my shape of my template.

So I'm going to put my hand down on my page and I'm going to make sure that I leave a wide enough seam allowance, I need to be able to put my hand up inside of the puppet.

So I'm going to actually do mine this wide today and then there's plenty of room to get my hand up in there.

Now, do you remember the problem I had with my paper mockup? This bit here was too narrow and these wings were too high for my finger and my thumb.

So on my new pattern piece today, on my new template, I'm going to make a little change to see if I can solve this problem that I had.

So now I want to like fit my hand, let me put in there to keep reminding myself, I'm going to do some wider wings this time, do that on the other side as well.

I think that's going to be much more successful in working as a puppet and then how tall my hand is, I'll still need some room on the top as well.

And the key pin, my feather tuft and bring that round, finish it off at the bottom.

So I know that my hand will be able to fit up in there much more successfully than my paper mockup.

So what you're going to do now everybody, is you're going to pause the video.

You're going to draw yourself a paper template, so just the outline of the animal that your puppet is based on.

Make sure it is wide enough for you to fit your hand in there, with perhaps enough skill at the moment too.

And then I would like you to cut this out and press play so you can join me to see what we're going to do next.

Off you go, good luck.

Well done everybody for creating your paper template.

We're now going to turn this into one panel, one pattern piece of our puppet.

I'll show you and then it'll be your turn.

Okay, so I've got my fabric and I've got my paper template.

Remember what Miss Larham taught you before, don't put it right in the middle, use as close to the edges as you can.

Your choices are draw around with chalk, pinning it on or taping around the edge, your choice.

So I'm going to use tape.

Just like this and then I am going to cut it out.

So I'd like you to pause your video and use one of the techniques to make your first pattern piece.

Off you go.

Fabulous job, everybody.

Welcome back.

Now, hopefully you should have your panel, your one pattern piece that we're going to use for our mockup.

So well done if you've got to this stage.

Now let's have a look at how we're going to decorate this, explore different finishing techniques.

Let's have a look at some different finishing techniques that you could explore today.

You could use some applique, do you remember applique from our star words? Fantastic, applique means we're going to sew or glue a decorative bit of fabric onto our main bit of fabric.

So something we would sew on to our puppet panel.

You could also use ICT and that means you could print off some shapes that you could use to help you with your decorating today.

So say for example, if you were doing a monkey, you might be able to look on your computer and find some facial features of a monkey.

Print those off, cut them out and use them as templates.

You could also decorate your puppet panel with fabric pens and paints.

Now be really careful if you're using these today because if you get them on your clothing, you won't be able to get them off again.

Something else you could use is buttons.

So how might you glue or sew on a button to decorate your puppet? You could also use sequins, so you could glue or sew on some sequins to help decorate and finish your puppet panel.

Or you could use things like beads, where you can glue or sew on some beads to add decorative finishing techniques to your puppet.

These are just a few examples, you might have lots of exciting things around your home.

You might have pipe cleaners and feathers and fluffy fabrics and all sorts of exciting things that you could try out today.

And remember everybody, this is just a mockup.

So we're just trying out our ideas, we're finding out which ones we like the best.

Shall I show you a few techniques on my puppet panel and then I'll give you lots of time to explore for yourself? So first I'm going to have a go at doing some applique.

So I'm going to have a go at sewing this panel onto my pattern piece.

So I've used my computer to print out the shape that matches on my design.

Now I have pinned that onto some of my scrap fabric.

Then what I'm going to do is cut that out, just like that No applique is putting fabric by either sewing or glueing onto another bit of fabric.

So I'm going to sew this on to here.

Let me show you how.

So if you're using sewing to applique, you need to pin the bit of fabric that you're sewing on onto the back bit of fabric to hold it in place.

Then I've got my needle and my thread with a knot at the end like we've practised before.

Now when we applique, we always start from the back.

And we do a running stitch, remember down, up, down, in a nice straight line all the way around the edge.

So you are sewing on a piece of fabric onto another.

That is called applique and your job would be to sew all the way around the edge.

Just like this.

And remember, when you get to your last stitch, do a double-stitch, so stitch over that last stitch again, turn over, loop it through the stitch, put your needle through the middle and pull it into a knot where you can cut it off.

Okay, so that is applique using sewing.

I'm going to show you how to do applique with glueing now.

So my next piece of applique, I'm going to have an explore with these blue fluffy bits around the eyes.

So I have got a shiny blue paper.

So I'm going to use my glue to applique this on, so I've got some glue on the back.

Let's stick that on.

I've also got the version of the fluffy eye with some felt.

So do you remember why I said this might actually start to look a little bit funny? Can you see how they both are different? But it's okay because I'm having an explore of different finishing techniques.

I'm going to decide which one I like best, I'm even evaluating whether I think glueing or sewing is better as well.

Always making choices, I'm always having a try.

Okay, I'm going to put my yellow bit on there as well.

So I could sew this on or I could glue it on.

I'm going to glue it on for now.

Just check which way it goes, but I could also sew it on.

Trying out different techniques.

Can you see? I'm looking at my design, I'm trying out different things.

Now I'm going to try out some different things with the eyes.

So I'm going to focus on this yellow bit here now.

So I thought this side I'm going to use my felt again and I'm going to use glue to applique that on or I could sew it on, either is fine.

And on this side, I'm going to do something a little bit different.

I'm just exploring, having a try.

So I'm going to use a yellow button, see what that looks like.

I'm going to glue that on or you can sew it on, either is absolutely fine.

And then to make this eye bit here, I've got a googly eye.

I'm trying out different things, that's what today's lesson is all about.

Trying things out, seeing what you like.

So I'm going to put that on there.

He's looking good.

And I'm going to use a black button for this side, so I could sew this on, I could glue it on, it's up to you, your choices.

Okay, so can you see how I'm trying out different techniques? He looks like such a funny parrot, but that's okay for today because we're seeing what we like the best.

Do you know what I'm going to do? I'm going to jazz him up a little bit.

I'm going to use some of my gems and make him a sparkly parrot.

These are some shiny gems that I found around my house in my craft box.

So just little things that you can start adding on with your finishing techniques.

I've got one more thing I want to show you about the wings and then it's going to be your turn.

On this side, I am going to glue on some feathers.

So I'm going to use some of the feathers from my craft box because a parrot has feathers.

So I'm going to see if I can glue on some actual feathers onto my parrot.

Another thing I could do is use some of my fabric pens to concentrate on this bit here.

So let's draw in shape, I'm using my pens as a decorative technique.

So I'm going to start with this green bit here.

Colouring that in.

And I can add in the blue bit.

And colour that in as well.

Okay, so what you're going to do now, is you're going to pause the video and you're going to have an explore with all the different finishing techniques you can think of.

So I want you to have a go at sewing some applique, glueing , decorating in lots of different ways.

And remember your puppet will look really funny at the end and all this time you were evaluating which ones you like and which ones you don't like.

So which ones will you choose for your final puppet? Then you will press play when you have had to go at all the different finishing techniques that you want to try.

Okay, good luck everybody.

I'll see you soon.

Welcome back everybody.

I hope you had a great time trying out all of those different finishing techniques.

I know I had a great time.

Isn't it great just to have the chance to try out and explore lots of different techniques before we make our final product? It's great to be able to evaluate and decide, isn't it, which ones we want to use for our final design.

Did you manage to get yours finished? Me too, do you want to show me? I'll show you mine as well.

He's looking very funny.

He's got odd eyes, odd wings, some things look great, some things look not so great.

But at least I know now which ones I want to use and which ones I don't.

So before we go, we've got an important job to do, because remember we've made lots of different design decisions today, so we are going to now adapt and edit our final design page.

Let's think about some evaluation questions before we adapt our final design.

Which finishing techniques did you like and why? So out of all of those different ones that you tried today, which one did you like and why? Which one of those finishing techniques will you use on your final puppet? I would like you to pause the video and have a really good look at what the work you've done today and make those decisions.

Which finishing techniques did you like and why and which ones will you use on your final puppet? Then press play when you've got your thoughts ready.

Off you go.

Welcome back everybody.

Well done for having a think.

What we're going to do now is adapt your final design to show which finishing techniques you are going to use.

I'll show you, then it will be your turn.

Okay, so I'm going to look at my puppet and make any edits to my final design.

Now, down here I said that I was going to use yellow felt, I'm going to keep that the same because I really like that bit.

I'm going to write down that I am going to applique it on, applique using sewing.

I really liked that bit of my mockup today.

Now I said on here that I was going to use green and blue felt, I am going to stick with that.

I did not like this fabric pen.

Can you see how we can't see which one's green and which one was blue? And actually it looks really messy.

So I'm not going to use the fabric pen on there.

Now, on here, I put that I was going to use blue felt, but I actually really like this shiny material.

So I'm going to change my mind.

I'm going to cross out I don't want blue felt anymore, I found something I like even better, then we put blue shiny paper.

I'm going to glue that on.

I also really like the googly eye.

So here where I put button eyes, I'm now going to change it to googly eyes instead.

So what I would like you to do is decide which finishing techniques you're going to use, label these onto your final design.

You might need to do some neat crossing out because you've changed your mind or you might need to add new labels because you've found some new things you want to add.

Okay, so press pause, complete your final design edit and then press play.

Off you go.

Welcome back.

What a fun but busy lesson we have had today.

Thank you for putting any edits onto your final design.

It's important that we try out all of these different things before we make our final puppet, isn't it? We get to make all of those design decisions.

Now, before you go, I want to see if you can answer my one tricky exit quiz question and it is a tricky one, so are you ready? Fantastic, brains turned on.

Let's see if we can do it.

Now earlier on, I sewed on this bit of fabric onto another bit of fabric.

I also glued a bit of fabric onto another bit of fabric.

That has a special name.

What is it called when you sew or glue a bit of fabric onto another bit of fabric? Have a think, I'll give you a clue.

Starts with the letter A.

A, apl, appli, do you think you've got it? Tell me now.

If you said applique, a huge well done, that's fantastic.

It is called applique.

My turn, applique.

Your turn.

Applique.

Well done, applique is where we sew or glue another bit of fabric onto a bit of fabric.

Well done if you knew that.

A huge well done for all of your hard work today, we really have had a busy lesson, haven't we? Next lesson, we're going to make our real final puppet.

So I really look forward to seeing you all then.

Bye everyone.
