Hello there! I'm Mrs. Howley and this is Sadrac and we've got a new tongue twister for you today and Sadrac likes it because its all about snails and it goes like this six slippery snail shall we try that bit first? Six slippery snails slid slowly seaward seaward means towards the sea slid slowly seaward slid slowly seaward okay I'm going to give it a try six slippery snails slip slowly seaward six slippery snails slip slowly seaward six slippery snails slip slowly seaward ohh great! What a good start lets get ready for our learning in today's lesson we're going to be exploring a text and giving personal opinions about what we read we're going to start with some spelling and then we're going to be thinking about what is an opinion? Then we're going to read the text then we're going to explore the text this lesson you will need an exercise book or some paper a pencil or a pen and your brilliant brain pause the video now so you can collect those things so far in this unit in spelling we've been looking at words that end in the letter string are and make an "are" sound are are are care share dare scare stare and spare what I'd like you to do now is have a look at the word look for the tricky bits say the words in a sentence so you know what it means write the word without peaking and then check the spelling pause the video now and have a try in this lesson we're going to be practising the skill of having personal opinions about a text now what is an opinion? Sadrac's got opinions on everything and I mean everything he doesn't like it when its cold because he has to hide away in his shell he doesn't like it when its too hot because then it takes him ages to get to the shade but I've got a different opinion I like it when its cold because I can get really cosy under the blanket I like it when its hot because I can play outside with my friends so these aren't facts they're opinions they're what me and Sadrac think about a certain topic when we explain our opinions we use the conjunction "because" he liked it because I liked it because we're going to try to do that today in our reading work when we're reading we're going to use the following strategy we're going to look at the letters we're going to say the sounds and then we're going to blend it together if we get to the end of a sentence and it doesn't make sense we're going to go back to the start of the sentence and read it again because we're going to be looking for evidence to back up our opinions in the text we're going to have to look for key words scanning the text for those words so we can find the information here's the first part of our text Butterfly now that's a capital letter that started the sentence but also in this text "Butterfly" is her name look at the Snail being used as a name too Butterfly would not not Butterfly would not let let Butterfly would not let the that's one of our tricky high frequency words Butterfly would not let the rain rain Butterfly would not let the rain spoil spoil the party Butterfly would not let the rain spoil the party she was excited but but she was excited but we know that conjunction she had had lots lots she was excited but she had lots to do she was excited but she had lots to do! She was always busy she was always busy first she need-ed past tense there ed needed needed first she needed to split diagraph A make first she needed to make sure that everyone would be there first she needed to make sure that everyone would be there how could she cheer Snail up? Oh there's that capital letter for the name because here "Snail" is being used as his name how could she cheer Snail up? He looked so fed up could you tell when I was reading that that I was trying to show the moods of the story? remember that's our focus in this unit building up our tool kit of how writers create mood lets have a look at the next bit of the text you might be starting to make some opinions about the characters lets have a try Snail Snail Snail looked down down Snail looked down at the wet ground Snail looked down at the wet ground he that's one of our high frequency words he wished he wished they would leave him him alone he wished they would leave him alone go away! Said Snail in a grumpy voice go away said Snail in a grumpy voice I don't like parties he tried to hurry away but he was so slow slow he tried to hurry away but he was so slow this made him even more fed up are you starting to make some opinions about the characters? I am first of all its my turn to make a personal opinion about the text Butterfly is kind.

True or false? Lets have a little look at the text and see if there's any evidence that can help me make my opinion of Butterfly Butterfly is kind true or false? Now let me see it says in the text that she wanted everyone to be there at the party it also tells me that she wanted to cheer Snail up I think she kind because she wants to cheer Snail up lets have a look at what else we can find out about the character okay so I've got my thought bubble I'm going to draw a heart to show that she's kind that'll influence my opinion of this character I'm going to draw a smiley face she seems very happy character she's excited about the party I'm also going to draw a lightening bolt because she's as fast as lightening she's busy and I know that because it tells me how busy she is in the text I'm also going to draw a balloon because we know she likes parties and I'm also going to explain what I think about the character I think she is kind because I'm using that conjunction to explain what I know I think she's kind because it says I'm backing up my opinion I think she kind because it says she wants everyone at the party I think she is kind because it says she wants everyone at the party we know from that evidence that we can make an opinion you might have different opinion than me we've also got the second part of the text which is all about the snail so now its open to you choose your playmates if you could choose either Snail or Butterfly as your playmate only one which would you choose and why? You can write a sentence or you can draw a picture of either the snail or Butterfly and label it with reasons why you'd like them to be your playmate but for an extra challenge I'd like you to try to use the words I think because or you could even use the conjunction but to explain your ideas pause the video now and give it a go! How did you get on? What is your opinion of this lesson? What's your opinion of this lesson Sadrac Sadrac says he found it really tricky to choose between the two characters that's absolutely fine Sadrac because as long as you can explain your opinion there's no right or wrong answer you've just got to try to use the evidence in the text to explain what you think you've done brilliantly I'm going to practise my tongue twister one more time six slippery snails slip slowly seaward okay ready? six slippery snails slip slowly seaward six slippery snails slip slowly seaward great! We've really enjoyed this lesson and hopefully we'll see you again really soon bye!.
