Hello everyone, my name is Ms. Butt And today we are going to learn three new words for you to use in your Aladdin unit.

Now today, we're going to be learning three clever or sly words.

So, I hope that you have cleared away any distractions and are ready to soak up some new and exciting vocabulary.

Enjoy the lesson.

Okay, so in today's lesson, we are going to first introduce the new vocabulary.

Then we're going to look for each word, at the synonyms and word pairs.

And finally, we're going to have a go at applying these new words in sentences.

For this lesson you're going to need an exercise book or a piece of paper, 'cause there's a little bit of writing right towards the end, a pencil, and your brains.

Pause the video now and make sure you've got everything that you need.

I want us to start off today by thinking of some villains who are clever or sly.

Can you tell me any villains that you know, in stories that you've read or in films that you've seen, or television programmes, of anyone who is a villain who is clever and a little bit sly? Let me hear your ideas.

Ooh, they were some great ones, they're very clever and sly.

Well, these are the characteristics that we're thinking of today, and in Aladdin, Jafar is certainly both of these things.

Here are some key vocabulary we're going to use today.

I say, you say.

Synonym.

Word pair.

Adjective.

Noun.

Well done.

A synonym is a word that means exactly or nearly the same as another word.

For example, merry or happy.

I could say merry Christmas or happy Christmas, and that means the same thing.

Word pairs are words that often appear together like a bright sun, or bright moon, or bright light.

An adjective is a describing word, and often it describes a noun, which is a person, a place, or a thing.

Today we're going to be learning three adjectives.

Let's take a look at the first illustration.

Now, we always look at the pictures first 'cause the pictures illustrate what the word means.

So I want you to be detectives and have a really close look at what is happening in this picture.

What can you see? How do you think these two characters are feeling? What do you think is going on here? Can you pause the video and have a think? Okay, well, I think that perhaps the dog who seems to be lying back, looking very relaxed, has somehow got out of perhaps, helping.

He didn't seem to be doing any painting.

And the other character is doing the painting of the fence all by himself.

And the dog is looking pretty pleased with himself about this.

I wonder if this has got something to do with what this word is about.

Let's take a look.

This word is cunning.

Cunning.

If you are cunning, you are sly or crafty, like someone who cleverly manages to get out of doing their chores.

We've learnt the word devious and devious is a similar word to this.

But I would say devious is a little bit more evil and cunning is a bit more, as this says, sly or crafty.

I can remember when I was younger and after dinner, we all had different jobs that we had to do, so different chores.

So someone perhaps might stack all the plates up, someone else might wipe the mats down and things like that.

And I think my brother was being a bit cunning because every time it got to the end of dinner for us all to do our chores, he would always say, oh, I just need to go to the loo.

And then he'd take a really long time.

So perhaps he was being a little bit cunning, trying to get out of doing his chores.

Let's take a look at these words, which could be synonyms of the word cunning.

Plan, devil, fox, disguise, clever, plot, devious, thief, trick, smile, sly, and ploy.

And a ploy is just another word for a cunning plan.

So here's this word in a sentence.

Aladdin's cunning disguise meant that nobody recognised him.

So, these words are a mixture of synonyms and word pairs.

I wonder if you could pause the video and see if you can spot which ones are synonyms. Off you go.

Okay, let's see how you got on.

The synonyms of cunning are clever, devious, and sly.

That means the rest of these words are word pairs.

I'm going to read them to you.

A cunning plan, a cunning devil, cunning fox, definitely, foxes are often portrayed as being very sly and cunning in stories.

A cunning disguise, when you're trying to dress up so that no one can see it's you.

A cunning thief.

Definitely, you'd have to be cunning to steal something.

A cunning ploy, which as I said, is just like a plan.

A cunning trick.

A cunning smile, I think definitely, I've seen the film Aladdin and definitely he does a few cunning smiles.

And a cunning plot.

Now, when we learn new vocabulary, it's really important that we say each word aloud because that's the way that we remember it.

So I'd like you now to pause the video and, just as I did, I'd like you to read each word pair.

Off you go.

Brilliant, well done.

Let's now see if you can remind me, what does this word mean? What does it mean? Well done, that's right.

It means sly or crafty.

Are you ready to have a look at our next illustration? Ooh, this looks a bit different.

What's happening here? What can you see? How do you think this character's feeling? What kind of story is behind this picture, do you think? This one's quite tricky.

Pause the video and just have a little think about what this could be showing.

Okay, so, looks to me like this character, 'cause he's got a tool in his hand, that makes me wonder if he has made this wheel out of stone.

And it looks, from what he's wearing, like maybe he's from a long, long time ago, maybe even from the Stone Age.

Let's see what this word is.

Innovative.

Innovative.

It's quite tricky word to say, that one, isn't it? Innovative is an adjective and it means creative or original.

Like the genius who carved the first ever wheel out of stone.

So if there is an innovative invention, it's something that's really creative and original.

And what we mean by original is that no one's done it before.

It's like a really new idea.

Just like the first ever person who made a wheel out of stone.

Imagine how innovative that would've been at the time when they didn't have that before.

Let's take a look at some words that could be synonyms of innovative.

Design, new, idea, solution, mind, original, product, creative, thinker, and way.

To help you, here's the word innovative in a sentence, The old ideas weren't working, so Jafar needed a more innovative plan to get the lamp.

If a word is a synonym, we should be able to replace the word innovative in this sentence with the other word, that might help you to spot the synonyms. Pause the video and have a go.

Let's see if you were right.

The synonyms are, new, original, and creative.

So for example, we could say the old ideas weren't working, so Jafar needed a more, well, we couldn't really actually say that, that's a good example of how sometimes it doesn't sound right.

Jafar needed a more new plan to get the lamp.

That doesn't quite sound right, instead we might say Jafar needed a new plan.

We wouldn't really say a more new plan.

And sometimes synonyms can fit exactly in the sentence perfectly, and sometimes it doesn't sound quite right.

But innovative and new are similar words and that's what makes them synonyms. That means the rest of these words are word pairs.

I'm going to read them to you.

An innovative design, ooh.

So, if you designed something that was innovative, it would be really creative and really original.

An innovative idea.

I wonder if you guys have ever had an innovative idea.

An innovative solution.

So perhaps if there was a problem, for example, let's imagine there was a problem with the Tubes in London being really, really busy.

Perhaps someone might have an innovative solution to that problem, a really original solution.

An innovative mind.

I'm sure lots of you have got innovative minds.

An innovative product.

So imagine something that you've designed that you then want to sell.

If it was something that was innovative, again, it would be really creative and original and new.

An innovative thinker.

An innovative way.

Now, just like before, I'd like you to read the word pairs aloud and you might just want to quickly practise saying the word innovative, because it is a difficult word.

Can you just practise it for me? Innovative.

Well done, right, off you go by yourselves.

Well done, it sounds it's a bit of a tongue teaser saying it over and over again, isn't it? Okay, can you remind me, what does this word mean? That's right, it means that it's creative and original.

Are you ready for our final word we're going to learn today? Let's take a look at the illustration.

Hmm, what's going on here? It looks like these twins are up to no good.

What's happening in this picture? What can you see? Can you explain what is going on here? Pause the video and have a think.

What I can see is I can see that these twins are selling umbrellas.

And they're tricking this dog, because he's buying an umbrella because he's soaking wet, but actually the fact that he's wet isn't because it's raining.

It's because they've sneakily, over the fence, drenched him with a hose pipe.

So, it seems like they're working together to get people wet so then they have to buy an umbrella.

It's a little bit sneaky, what they're up to.

This word is shrewd.

I say, you say.

Shrewd.

Shrewd.

Shrewd means clever or sharp-witted, like someone who comes up with a smart plan to make lots of money.

This word is similar to the word astute, which some of you may have learned already.

So astute and shrewd both mean clever and sharp witted.

Let's take a look at some synonyms. Question, politician, operator, intelligent, guess, observation, judge, eye, clever, businesswoman, judge of character, and sharp witted.

Lots of options there.

Here's the word in a sentence.

Abu was a shrewd judge of character and did not trust Jafar from the moment he met him.

So, which words do you think could be synonyms of shrewd? See if you can have a guess.

Okay, well done.

Don't worry if you found that tricky, 'cause this is really difficult.

We're learning some really ambitious words.

The synonyms are intelligent, clever, and sharp witted.

That means that all of these other options are word pairs, and I'm going to read them to you.

So maybe you might come up with a shrewd question.

Perhaps you might be a shrewd politician.

A shrewd operator.

A shrewd eye, so you might notice things.

A shrewd judge of character.

A shrewd businesswoman.

A shrewd guess, so very clever guess.

And a shrewd judge.

So just like before, could you have a go at reading the word pairs aloud? Off you go.

Excellent, well done.

Now here are the three illustrations and the three words we've learned today.

I'd like to see if you can remember which illustration matches which word.

Off you go.

Okay, let's see how you got on.

So the first one, where the character has got out of doing his chores is cunning.

The second one, where someone has created something brand new and original is innovative.

And the final one, where someone's come up with a clever way to make money is shrewd.

An even bigger challenge now is, if we can remember the definitions for each word.

So I'd like you to pause the video and read the definition and see if you can match them up to the correct piece of vocabulary.

Off you go.

Well done, let's see how you got on.

Cunning means, sly or crafty.

Innovative means creative or original.

And shrewd means clever or sharp witted.

Let's try and apply these words in sentences.

Now, I've tried to write sentences that will be useful in your Aladdin unit.

The mm parrot snatched the treasure from his greasy palm.

Hmm, pause the video.

Which words do you think would fit well in this sentence? The shrewd parrot snatched the treasure from his greasy palm.

Actually, we could also say the cunning parrot.

The innovative parrot, it might be innovative parrot, there's not much evidence of that in this sentence here.

So I'd say shrewd or cunning would both have been good guesses.

Let's take a look at this one.

When the servant refused, the mm master sent his parrot to grab the mysterious object.

Ooh, which words do you think could fit here? The correct answer is, cunning, but again, it could be shrewd.

So if you got shrewd, that's also a good option.

And finally, Aladdin was always thinking of mm ways of finding food.

I've definitely seen in the film, Aladdin, finding different ways and being very crafty, of getting food.

What do you think? Which word fits here? Aladdin was always thinking of innovative ways of finding food.

So like, original or new ways.

Now it's time for you guys to have a go at doing your own writing.

Now, please, don't worry if you find these sentences difficult to write, because these words are extremely tricky words that we've learned, and you've done really, really well to remember what each one means.

And putting them in a sentence is even more difficult, but you can use the word pairs to help you.

So for example, you might pick the word pair smile, and then you could form a sentence around that idea.

So, a cunning smile, hmm, maybe you could say something about Jafar having a cunning smile.

Here's a sentence scaffold to help you.

As a cunning smile spread across Jafar's face comma, he.

So, that's an example of a complex sentence, because I'm starting off with a subordinating clause, as this thing happened comma, what else happened at the same time? And as you can see, I've got an apostrophe before the S for Jafar's face.

That's because Jafar is, there's not lots of Jafars, his face belongs to him.

So I have to have that apostrophe to show the possession.

Could you have a go now at pausing the video and writing your own sentence, using the word cunning? And if you want, you can use my sentence scaffold and you can just finish the sentence for me.

Brilliant, well done.

Let's take a look at the next sentence I want you to write, is using the word innovative.

And again, if you're struggling, don't worry 'cause this is a really tricky word.

But you could use a word pair to help you.

For example, maybe you might think of innovative idea, and then you might think about Aladdin coming up with an innovative idea.

And then you could form a sentence around that.

Don't forget your capital letters at the start and full stops at the end of your sentence.

Off you go.

Brilliant, well done.

Oh, you must be tired after all that writing.

I've just got one more sentence I'd like you to write, and you guessed it, it's using the word shrewd.

So, could you please pick one of the word pairs, for example, a shrewd eye, and maybe you could write a sentence around that word pair, okay? So have a go at writing one final sentence using the word shrewd, which means clever or quick-witted.

Brilliant, well done.

You've worked so hard today and you have now learned three new really impressive words to describe characters who are clever or sly.

I think that definitely, the word cunning is similar to the word sly.

Shrewd I'd say is a bit more like someone who's clever, but in this illustration of shrewd, they do look a bit like they're up to no good.

So we can see that often sly and clever characters, those two characteristics kind of come hand in hand sometimes, not always.

I hope you enjoyed this lesson and if you'd like to share any of the sentences that you wrote, you can ask a parent or carer and you can share your work on Twitter.

Thank you so much for watching this lesson and well done for working so hard.

I'll see you soon, everyone, bye!.
