Hello.

My name is Ms. Butt.

And today we're going to be learning three new words for you to use in your persuasive writing on healthy food.

Now, I know that you have been planning your own and designing your own healthy snack that you are going to be doing an advert for.

One of the parts of making an advert is trying to persuade the audience to buy your product.

So, I thought that if we learned three new words to make your product sound really amazing, it will encourage people or persuade people to want to buy or eat your snack.

I hope that these three words will be really helpful and I hope you enjoy the lesson.

Okay.

Let's get started.

So today we're going to first introduce some new vocabulary.

Then we're going to look at synonyms and word pairs for each new word, and finally we're going to have a go at applying these words in sentences.

You're even going to have a chance to write your own sentences using the new words.

For today's lesson, you're going to need a piece of paper or a note pad to write in, a pencil and your brains.

Please also make sure that you try as hard as possible to clear away anything that's going to distract you so you can really focus on today's learning.

Pause the video now and make sure you've got everything that you need and make sure you're ready for today's learning.

Okay.

Let's start thinking about some meals 'cause the words we're learning today are words you could use to describe meals or snacks or food.

I want you to think about if you had to eat the same meal every single day for the rest of your life, what would it be? I put a picture here of a pizza because I love pizza and I think if I only could have one thing for the rest of my life it would be pizza although that probably wouldn't be very healthy.

What would you wants to eat? Pause the video and how to think.

Okay, well done.

So, some key vocabulary we're going to use today are, synonym, word pair, adjective, and noun.

A synonym is a word that means exactly or nearly the same as another word like merry or happy.

a word pair are words that often appear together like a bright sun or a bright moon.

An adjective is a describing word.

And normally it describes a noun which is a person, place or thing.

The words we're looking at today are adjectives.

They're describing words and they're going to be really useful describing words to describe your snacks that you will be advertising.

Let's have a look at our first adjective.

Now have a look at this image because before I reveal the word, this image is really helpful for understanding what this word means.

What's happening in this picture? Could you describe this picture to me? What can you see? Pause the video and have a go.

Okay.

Well done.

Well, I agree with you.

I think I can see lots of very healthy looking fruits and vegetables in this bag that this fly is carrying.

This little fly is also drinking some green juice which I think looks like some kind of perhaps like a celery juice or something that's extremely healthy and it's making him look very wide awake.

So, I think that this word might be something to do with being very healthy.

Let's take a look.

This word is wholesome.

I say you say wholesome.

Wholesome.

Wholesome.

Wholesome is an adjective that means healthy or good for you.

Like a bag of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Let's take a look at some words which could be synonyms of the word wholesome.

Healthy, ingredients, lifestyle, meal, snack, story, balanced, good for you, influence and food.

Here's the word in a sentence.

This can help us to find, locate the synonyms. This wholesome snack is ideal for children and adults.

If a word is a synonym, we can usually replace it in the sentence.

Not always, but can sometimes help us.

So pause the video and see if you can spot the synonyms. Let's see if you were right.

The synonyms of wholesome are healthy, balanced, and good for you.

So, we could say this healthy snack or this balanced snack.

We couldn't say this good for you snack but wholesome means good for you so that's why that synonyms. Balanced means that if you have a balanced diet, it means that you have lots of different parts of your diet.

You have some carbohydrates which is things like rice or potatoes, you have some protein that you might get through fish or eggs or meat, and you have vegetables and fruits and all things like that.

So, that's why we've got the word balance diet.

It doesn't mean like balancing on scales.

It means having a balance of different types of foods.

That means the rest of these words are word pairs.

Let me read them to you.

A wholesome meal.

Oh, I had a wholesome meal last night.

I had some salmon and broccoli and some new potatoes that actually grew at our school.

Someone dug them up and I found them in the kitchen with a sign saying, "please help yourself." So, I cooked those and they were very delicious.

I'm very wholesome.

A wholesome lifestyle.

If you have a wholesome lifestyle, that means you are healthy not only in what you eat, but also in terms of doing exercise and things that are good for you in general.

Wholesome ingredients.

Looks like in this image the fly has got a bag of wholesome ingredients.

Wholesome snack.

Wholesome fun.

This is a bit of a strange one.

If fun is wholesome, again it just means it's something that's good for you.

For example, playing outside in the park with your friends would be wholesome fun because that probably means you're getting fresh air and running around.

Perhaps sitting inside and gaming isn't so wholesome because it's not giving you as many health benefits as playing in the park or doing exercise.

A wholesome story.

Again, it's something that's good for you.

So again, if there was a story that was going to give you bad nightmares, that perhaps wouldn't be a wholesome story.

A wholesome influence.

Now, influence is when something has an effect on you.

So, somebody, a friend for example, could be a good influence on you, means they have a good effect on you or a bad effect on you.

If you have wholesome influence, it would be influence if it would affect you in a way that was good for you and healthy for you.

And finally, wholesome food.

That's really important.

Am I learning new vocabulary that we say the words aloud, 'cause that's the way that we remember them.

So what I'd like you to do now, is pause the video and read these words out loud just as I did.

Off you go.

Well done.

Are you ready for our second word? Let's take a look at the image.

Oh sorry, before we do that, I want to quickly test you.

What does wholesome mean? Can you tell me what does it mean? That's right.

It means healthy and good for you.

Okay.

Now you ready to look at the second word.

We're going to look at the image first of all.

Ooh, what's happening in this picture? Can you pause the video and describe what you see? Off you go.

I think that this character is looking very excited about eating this, What looks to me like some kind of stew.

And then this stew I can see some, I think carrots and some peas and maybe some other vegetables, Maybe those, the brown bits might be some meat or I'm not sure maybe that's a bread and he's got a bit of bread on the side.

And it's a really big portion and that's why he's looking I think very pleased.

It looks to me as well Like this might be a warm bowl of stew.

Let's find out what this word is.

This word is hearty.

Hearty.

Hearty is also an adjective and it means filling or warming and wholesome, like a healthy bowl of stew on a winter's day.

If you had some very small portion or something that was cold like a little salad, we wouldn't really describe that as hearty.

It would be wholesome and healthy, but it might not be filling and warming.

I wonder if you can think of an example of something you've eaten recently that was really hearty or based on it's so good.

I had recently a plate of delicious sausages and mashed potato with some peas on the side and gravy.

And that was really hearty because it really filled me up and was warming.

And I also had some vegetables on my plate as well.

So it was wholesome.

Let's take a look and see if we can spot any synonyms stew, meal, wholesome, breakfast, warming, laugh, welcome, cheer, filling and soup.

Some of these words are word pairs and some are synonyms. Here's the word in a sentence.

On a cold winter day, this hearty meal will keep you healthy and warm.

Could you pause the video and see if you could replace the word hearty with any of those words there, which means it could be a synonym.

Off you go.

Let's see if you were right.

The synonyms are, wholesome, warming, and filling.

So we could say on a cold Wednesday this wholesome meal, this warming meal or this filling meal.

That means the rest of these words are word pairs.

Let me read them to you.

A hearty stew, a hearty meal, a hearty breakfast that's always a good way to start the day.

A hearty laugh.

Now this is strange 'cause we do eat laughs.

So I wonder how a laugh could be hearty.

Hmm, we know that if something is hearty, it's quite substantial, it's quite big and it's also quite warm.

So, if someone was to do a hearty laugh, it would be something that was quite loud and quite warming.

I imagine that father Christmas would have a very hearty laugh.

And also this is similar to a hearty welcome, or a hearty cheer.

If a crowd gave a hearty cheer, or if someone gave you a hearty welcome, it would be very warm and very big.

And finally a hearty soup.

Could you now have a go at reading these word pairs aloud.

Off you go? Okay.

Well done for joining in.

Can you tell me what does hearty mean? That's right.

It means filing, warming and wholesome.

Oh, I hope I'm going to have a hearty dinner tonight later on.

Okay.

Ready for our final word.

Here's the image.

Whew.

What do you think this word could be? Hmm, what's happening here? What can you see? How is this character feeling? What kinds of things can you notice on the table? Pause the video and have a think? Well done.

Well, to me this character looks like they've got lots of different things and it looks like lots of very expensive things.

I think that might be a bottle of champagne in that bucket, and I can also see a plate.

Is that could be lobster which I know is a type of fish which is quite expensive? and a bread roll and a jug of water, and she's got candlelight and she's having a glass of wine.

This means that there's a big feast in front of her.

She's not holding back, you see.

She's not got a little tiny piece of toast.

She's got lots of quite expensive food.

Should we see what the word is? Sumptuous.

Sumptuous.

Sumptuous is an adjective and it means lavish and luxurious.

Like a banquet made up of the finest food and drink.

This makes me think of one of my favourite films "Beauty and the Beast" I watched when I was younger and when Belle first goes to the castle and all the different characters put on a sumptuous feast 'cause they want to give her every option of food so that she finds something she likes.

And it's very, very luxurious and very lavish, lavish, luxurious mean kind of the same thing.

I wonder if you could choose a sumptuous feast of any food in the world, what would be on your table? Hmm, trying to think what would be on my table.

Probably lots of delicious pizzas, lots of lovely fruits like cherries and things like that.

Okay.

Let's take a look at words that could be synonyms of this word sumptuous.

Lavish, dinner, feast, luxurious, breakfast, grand, room, buffet and surroundings.

And just so you know, a buffet is when things, rather than just getting a plate of food, lots of things are spread out so you can choose what you want.

That's what buffet is.

So here's the word in a sentence.

This sumptuous breakfast will keep you going all day.

Oh, what my sumptuous breakfast be? Perhaps it might be something like smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and some fruit salad and some orange juice and all kinds of delicious things.

I'd like you to pause the video now and have a think about which of these words could be synonyms of sumptuous.

Off you go.

Let's see if you were right.

The synonyms are, lavish, luxurious, and grand.

That means the rest of these words are word pairs.

Let me read them to you.

Sumptuous dinner, sumptuous feast, sumptuous breakfast, sumptuous surroundings, hmm, which is strange 'cause again, sumptuous is usually something that's very luxurious that we eat, but we don't eat our surroundings and we don't eat sumptuous room.

This is because we can still use the word sumptuous to describe your surroundings or your room if it is something that's very luxurious.

So, what might a sumptuous room look like? Have a think about that now, close your eyes and imagine a sumptuous room.

What are you imagining? I'm imagining lots of pillows and lovely, maybe some lovely artwork on the wall and maybe lots of food around I could eat.

Maybe someone getting me things I wanted to, brushing my hair or painting my nails, something like that.

And finally, a sumptuous buffet.

And again, that was when we could pick the foods that we like.

As you know, we're only going to learn these words and remember them if we say them aloud.

So, can you now pause the video and read these word pairs? Okay.

Well done.

We've learnt all three new words.

Let's see if you can remember them.

Here are the three images.

Can you remember which word matches which image? Pause the video and see if you can do that.

Okay.

Let's see if you were right.

The first one was wholesome.

The second one was hearty, and the final one was sumptuous.

Now we've got even bigger challenge which is, can you remember which definition matches which word? Pause the video and see if you can do that for me now.

Let's see if you were right.

So, wholesome means healthy or good for you.

Hearty means filling, warming and wholesome.

And sumptuous means lavish and luxurious.

Now we're going to have a go at placing these words or applying these words in sentences.

This hmm oat bar contains whole grains, which are a good source of fibre.

This might be the kind of sentence you might put in your advert on your healthy snack.

But I wonder which word fits here best.

If it's got whole grains, which has good source of fibre, which is important for balanced diet and being healthy, I wonder which word this could be? Could you pause the video and have a go at telling me? That's right.

It's this wholesome oat bar contains whole grains which are good source of fibre.

The other two wouldn't be wrong, I think that one is the best fit in this example.

Let's take a look at another sentence.

This hmm snack will make your taste buds sing something that's really, really delicious.

Pause the video.

Which word would fit here? I have gone for the word sumptuous.

This sumptuous snack will make your taste buds sing.

what might be a sumptuous snack? Or maybe something like strawberries dipped in chocolate.

That would be very sumptuous.

And finally, when you are hungry, choose this hmm snack to fill you up.

Hmm.

Okay.

So this is a word that's got something to do with making you feel full.

Pause the video and have a go at this one.

That's right.

It's hearty because we know a hearty snack is something that's going to be filling and warming.

Right, it's your turn now to have a go at writing your own sentences.

I'd like you to have a go first at writing a sentence, which uses the word wholesome.

And remember the word pairs can help you.

So, you could pick a word pair for example, you might pick wholesome fun, and then you might have a go at writing a sentence about wholesome fun.

Or if you want to practise writing something that will be useful for your advert on your snack, you could use wholesome snack and you could expand that into a really persuasive sentence.

Don't forget your sentences need capital letters and full stops.

Pause the video and off you go.

Well done.

Are you ready to write another sentence? Do you think you've got the energy? I hope so 'cause I'd like you now to write a sentence using the word hearty.

Now remember the word pairs are really helpful when you're writing a sentence.

For example, you might choose the word hearty soup, and then you might put that into a full sentence.

Perhaps you could try to be really ambitious with your sentence and include a conjunction like and or but or so or because.

Have a go at writing a sentence using hearty now.

Well done.

And we've got one last sentence to write.

I hope you've got the energy.

Finally, I'd like you to write a sentence using the word sumptuous.

Again, pick one of the word pairs 'cause that will help you to think of an idea.

For example, you could write a sound sentence about a sumptuous breakfast or a sumptuous room.

Pause the video and see if you can write your own sentence now.

Well done.

You've worked so hard today and you've learnt three really ambitious new words.

I really hope that these words appear in some of your adverts for advertising your snack because they will impress everyone because they're like I say, ambitious words to be using.

If you want to share any of your sentences so that we can have a look, then you can ask a parent or carer and you could share your work on Twitter.

I'll see you soon, everyone.

Bye.
