Hi, everybody.

It is so wonderful to see you today.

My name is miss McCartney and I am so excited because today we are going to hear a very special story.

And I have got my special storytelling friend, Lenny, with me to help.

To make sure that you have a very best learning you can be today.

You need to make sure that you have a piece of paper or something to write on, a pencil or something to write with, and your wonderful creative brain.

If you would like, you could also grab your very own storytelling partner.

If you need to go and collect any of those things, pause your video now to make sure that you are ready.

Fantastic.

Today, we are going to start by learning a new spelling rule.

Then, it is my favourite part of the lesson, we are going to hear our new story.

We are then going to map our story together and you will have a chance to practise.

We are going to finish with our deep thinking question.

Let's have a look at our new spelling rule.

Today, we are going to be adding the suffix ing to our root words But we need to make some special changes to our root words first.

Let's have a look in some more detail.

I have got the verb, begin.

Before I add my suffix, I have done something to my word, begin.

Have a look carefully.

Can you notice what I have done? Wonderful.

I have added another n then I add my suffix ing to make the word, beginning.

Let's have a look why I did that and how we are going to work with the rest of our words.

We have got four verbs today.

My turn, your turn, swim hum run stop.

Fantastic.

And we need to hunt for some special letters called vowels.

There are five vowels, they are a, e, i, o, and u.

Fantastic.

In the word, swim.

I have a vowel before my last letter.

My vowel is I, Can you have a look at the words, hum, run and stop, and find the vowel before the last letter.

Pause your video now to have a look.

It was so wonderful to see so many learners working so hard.

The word hum, we have to vowel, u, before the last letter m.

In the word, run, we also have the vowel, u.

Before the last letter, n.

And in the word, stop, we also have a vowel before the last letter, o and that comes before p.

Fantastic.

Let's have a look at what do we need to do next.

We have got all of our vowels on the screen to help us.

Our first verb is swim and we can see the vowel i, before our last letter.

Now we need to double our last letter, which is called consonant.

That's a really tricky word to say.

My turn, consonant.

Your turn.

Brilliant.

So I need to double my consonant and then at my suffix, ing.

Let's have a look at our next verb.

I have the verb, hum.

I can already see my vowel because you told me that on the last slide.

Now I need to double my consonant.

Can you whisper to your screen, what is our consonant? Fantastic.

Our consonant is m, we need to add another m, then we can add our suffix, ing to make the word, humming.

Let's have a look at our final verb, which is run.

And I can see my vowel before the last letter, so I need to double my consonant.

This time I want you to tell me what my consonant is in a squeaky voice.

Okay.

We have to double our consonant n and then we add our suffix ing to make the word running.

Now this is a really tricky rule, so we have done so well.

I am really impressed with all of you today.

Okay.

It's over to you now.

We've still got our vows on this screen to help you.

We have got three words: admit, rub and jog.

I would like you to pause the video now, hunt for the vowel before the last letter, double the consonant and then add your suffix ing.

Well done everybody.

Let's have a look to see if we got them right.

If we didn't, then that's okay, because we can learn from our mistake by fixing it.

So in the word, admit, I can see the vowel I, before the last letter.

So I know I need to double the consonant t and add my suffix ing.

So I get the word admitting.

In the word rub, I have the vowel u before my last letter, I need to double the consonant b and add my suffix ing to make the word rubbing.

Fantastic, everybody.

My last verb is jog, and I can see the vowel before the last letter is, o, so I need to double the consonant g and add my ing to make jogging.

Fantastic.

I am so impressed.

Give yourself some wonderful shine and feel all warm inside to celebrate your learning today.

Okay.

I have one more spelling task before we move on to our story.

Which one of these words does not need a double constant when we add the suffix ing? So look at all three words.

Look at the letter before the last letter and find which word does not have a vowel.

Pause your video now, to try and find the word.

Well done, everybody.

I could see so many fast fingers pointing to the word, walk.

If we look at the word, walk.

the letter before the last letter is an l.

So it is not a vowel so we do not need to double our consonant.

We can just add the suffix ing.

Okay.

I'm giving you a little clue now about what might appear in our story.

I have got the question.

Would you rather travel to a humid.

Which means very hot and sticky.

Would you rather travel to a humid jungle or a cool mountain top? Now you can tell me on your screen or you can tell your special storytelling friend.

Oh, so Lenny has said he would rather go to a humid jungle, even though it's really hot and sticky, because he is scared of big tall mountains.

Even though he climbs trees, he's a bit scared of heights.

Poor Lenny! Okay.

We are going to listen to our very special story now.

I can't wait.

Hello everybody, I am going to share a wonderful story with you today.

It comes all the way from India.

I have brought my special storytelling friend, Lenny, to sit beside you and listen to the story.

Make sure that you are sat comfortably and you are ready to listen.

This story is called "The Marriage of Ganesh".

Elephant headed Ganesh sat inside of his library.

In two of his hands, he held up a book and flipped through the pages.

In his other two hands, he cut and ate a mango.

Suddenly his brother Kartikeya rushed in.

"Brother, brother, I have something important to tell you.

I have heard all about a wonderful princess named Birdie.

She is intelligent, eloquent, and kind.

Our community cannot stop talking about her wisdom of the world.

I would love to throw her a feast to celebrate her and invite her family.

Ganesh and stroked his elephant trunk.

"Ah, brother.

This is interesting.

I have also heard about the wonderful birdie, I would like to host a celebration feast for her".

Kartikeya stomped.

"That's not fair.

It was my idea".

He frowned and he thought, "Ah, I have an idea, brother.

Perhaps we could fight and whoever wins will be able to host the feast".

"No, no, no", said Ganesh, "That's a silly idea.

You are the God of war and I would surely lose." Kartikeya thought hard again.

"Hmm.

I have another idea.

How about we race around the world and the winner who arrives back the quickest would be able to host the feast." Ganesh thought long and hard, again stroking his elephant trunk.

"Let me just be clear, brother.

We can race around the world in our own way that we choose.

"Yes", said Kartikeya.

Ganesh thought back, "Hmm.

If we can race in our very own way, then I will partake".

Kartikeya got ready near the door and counted down three, two, one.

Go! Kartikeya run as fast as he could until he arrived at the Himalayan mountains.

He climbed and he passed many animals on his way.

He saw eagles soaring below him.

He ran so fast and so high that he was soon in the clouds, but he did not wait that long.

Although he could not see his brother.

He rushed back down the other side of the mountain until he came to the Chinese forest where he passed panthers and other terrifying creatures.

Before long, he had made his way to the rice paddies, where he weaved his way so not to disturb the growth of the rice.

Before long he came to the sea and he jumped in without hesitation.

He swung from island to island, passing dolphins, sharks, and fish.

He was very pleased with his progress and he looked around the sea for his brother, yet he was not there.

He soon made his way past some buffaloes who told him some wonderful stories, but he could not stay long for he to jump back into the sea and weave his way through all of the ice running over Russia.

And over the top of the rest of the world.

He passed polar bears, but still he did not wait long to hear their stories.

Before long, he arrived back at the palace.

Hmm, he still had not seen Ganesh.

Ah, where did he find him? Sat in the library.

Kartikeya was suspicious, "Have you even raced around the world?" "Of course I have", said Ganesh.

"I said I would partake in the race." "I would like you to prove it.

Tell me where you have been." Get Nash told about his travels.

He spoke of the Himalayan mountains, of the rice paddies, of the buffaloes, all the way across the top of the world.

Kartikeya felt very disappointed, for he had really wanted to win and to host the feast, but he congratulated his brother.

A few nights later, Ganesh hosted the wonderful feast.

There was food and drink and dancing, and of course Birdie and her family attended.

It just so happened that Birdie admired Ganesh, just as much as he admired her.

And on the most beautiful day of the year, they married.

At the wedding feast, Kartikeya approached Ganesh, "Brother did you really race all around the world? "Hmm," said Ganesh, "whilst you were running around the world, I sat in my library and read my books.

I read about every single country.

So yes, I did race about the world, but in my own way." Kartikeya felt his heart sink.

"Do you not think that's cheating?" Story listeners.

What did you think? Do you think, do you think Lenny, that Ganesh cheated by choosing to read books about the world instead of racing? Oh, Lenny said that he would like to know what you think.

Do you think that Ganesh sitting in his library instead of actually visiting the countries was cheating? They have got lots of wonderful, different ideas.

I had some people say, no, it wasn't cheating because at the beginning of the story Ganesh asked Kartikeya if he could run the race in any way he chose.

But other children think that he was being misleading.

What was your favourite part of the story? Lenny was so excited to tell me his favourite part.

Lenny's favourite part was when Kartikeya finally got to the top of the mountains and he was in the clouds.

That does sound like an interesting place to go.

I wonder if there are any parts about the story that were a little bit confusing.

Maybe you could tell Lenny, if you found any part confusing.

Oh, it is quite confusing.

At the beginning, we found out that Ganesh have four different arms. In two of his arms, he was holding up book and in two of his arms, he was holding a mango.

That is a bit confusing.

Isn't it Lenny? Right.

We are now going to learn how to make a story map so that we can understand the story and learn about the mood of our story a little bit better.

Okay.

Everybody.

This is the really exciting part of our lesson, where we are going to remember the story and draw our story map.

So the first thing that happened in the story is we met the elephant headed Ganesh.

So, I am going to do my best to try and draw an elephant.

Here he is.

I did have a little practise first because I found it super hard.

You could just draw an elephant trunk if you wanted to.

Now our elephant headed Ganesh was doing two things in his library.

I wonder if you can remember? Brilliant.

The third thing he was doing with two of his hands was reading an interesting book.

The second thing he was doing was eating a mango.

What happened next? Now it's very important that we use our arrows so we know which way our story is going.

Okay.

The next thing that happens is Kartikeya rushes in and he says, "I would like to throw a feast to celebrate Birdie".

And he suggests they have a fight, but Ganesh says, no, he does not want to fight, even though he would like to host a feast for birdie as well.

Here is my feast.

I've got some people and I've got a table with food and drink and I've got some music.

So Ganesh suggests they should.

What does he suggest they should do? Brilliant.

He suggests they should race around the world.

I wonder in a minute, when you have a go, if your race around the world symbol will be the same or different to mine.

Now, Kartikeya gets really excited.

And the first place that he races to is.

Fantastic.

It is the Himalayan mountains.

And there are eagles soaring below.

I wonder any of our learners can remember the next place he visits.

He visits the wonderful forest in China.

So here's my forests, and here he meets a panther.

Here's my panther.

I reckon in a minute, you can draw a much better panther than me.

Here he meets some panthers and some other terrifying creatures.

The next place Kartikeya goes is the rice paddies.

Now, rice paddy is where rice is growing.

And it's kind of a big field with lots of rows where the rice can grow.

So that's my drawing of a rice paddy.

He then jumps into the sea and he swims from island to island.

Here is my Island.

And he also passes lots of sharks, lots of fish and lots of dolphins.

So I've drawn my fish.

He then encounters an animal that tells him some stories.

And that animal is a buffalo.

Here we go.

I'm going to draw some horns so that I know it's a buffalo and a big speech bubble because he tells Kartikeya a story.

The next thing he does, is he jumps back into the sea.

He goes over the top of Russia and he swims amongst big blocks of ice where he meets another animal.

Can you remember the animal that he meets on the ice? Here is my drawing, he's got a bit of a pointy nose.

He meets a polar bear or lots of polar bears that also tell him stories.

Now when he gets back, he searches and he searches for Ganesh and he finds him in.

Fantastic.

The library.

And he is very suspicious, so he asks Ganesh about all the different places.

And Ganesh can actually tell him.

So Ganesh wins the race, therefore he gets to host the wonderful feast for Birdie.

And when he meets her, they actually fall in love and they decide to get married.

At the marriage feast, Kartikeya, gets very suspicious and he asked Ganesh about his journey.

And Ganesh says that he actually stayed in the library, the whole time.

And he read about all the different countries, because the beginning of the story, Ganesh asked if he could run the race any way he wanted to, in his own way.

So he did it by reading books and Kartikeya ends by asking us, "Do you think that is fair?" Do you think that it's cheating? Now that we have drawn our story map together? It is your turn to draw your very own story map.

As a challenge, I would like you to create your own very special picture for each of the important steps in this story.

I am sure that they will be much better than mine.

If you would like you can go back and watch the video of us drawing the story map together, again.

Pause the video now, to draw your very own story map.

Okay, everybody, it is time to step our story.

This is one of my favourite parts about being a storyteller.

And it can help you to remember the story so that you can be a wonderful storyteller too.

Now, when we step the story, we create an action to represent each picture.

So we are going to do the first three together, and then it is your turn.

So I'm going to step backward so that when I have done my first action, I can step into their next part of the story.

So what is the first thing that happens in our story? I can say lots of you speaking to the screen, because you already know from your story map.

If you need to, you can have your story map beside you to help you to remember.

The first thing is that elephant headed Ganesh is sat in his library, reading his books and eating a mango.

So what action could I do for that? Can you show me some of your ideas? Wonderful.

I saw really good action over there.

Someone was stirred and they had that book and they were looking and doing a brilliant, thoughtful facial expression.

So my first step of the story is Okay, so I'm going to step forward.

What was the second part of my story? Excellent.

Kartikeya, Ganesh's brother runs in to tell him all about the wonderful birdie and his idea for a feast.

So I am going to pretend to be Kartikeya shouting in excitement at his brother.

So I am going to do this move.

Okay.

Let's practise the first two that we've done so far.

So back to the beginning, reverse my first action.

Okay.

Those are my first two steps.

I'm going to take a step forward because we are going to practise step number three now.

Can we remember from our story map what the next important part of the story is? Tell your screen.

Excellent.

It is when they decide to race around the world.

So my freeze frame is going to be.

I could do a world or I could do some racing.

I think racing would be more fun.

So my racing action is going to be okay.

Let's go back to the beginning and practise our three steps so far.

We are not speaking, but we are focusing on our body language and our facial expression to help us to create the mood of the story.

So we know how the characters are feeling.

Okay, I'm going to start my stepping on three.

One two three.

Fantastic stepping, everybody.

It is now going to be your turn.

So get your story map, have another look and start thinking about the different steps that you are going to have in your story.

I loved creating my different steps for my story.

So my clear action, that showed the mood of the character on my face without me talking.

Thank you so much for those children that I already saw getting up and helping me with my step.

Now, before you start your stepping, you need to remember to have a clear facial expression.

Are you feeling sad, happy, or a different emotion? You need to have a clear pose.

And the final thing is you need to have a clear step.

So every time you finish one of your poses you need to step.

And actually the most important thing is you need to have loads and loads of fun.

Good luck everybody, off you go and pause the video.

Fantastic work on your stepping, everybody.

I think it is time for us to do my favourite celebration clap and it is called the marshmallow clap.

And you pretend you have a marshmallow that's really giant between your hands and you give it a clap.

So everybody give yourself a marshmallow clap.

Fantastic.

Now our last question for today, is who do you think could be considered more of a hero Ganesha or Kartikeya? Now you might have noticed I've written Ganesha there, but I've said Ganesh throughout the rest of the video.

And that is because this story is told in lots of different ways.

Who do you think could be considered more of a hero? Have a little pause of the video and think really carefully.

Could you tell me by whispering to the screen, which name you think is more of a hero Ganesh or Kartikeya? Interesting.

So we had lots of people saying different things.

Ganesh could be considered a hero because actually he decides to read his books and do the race in a different way.

So he's quite unique.

But Kartikeya sticks to his own rules and actually finds out a lot and has lots of fun.

I would love to know what you think.

If you would like to share any of your learning today, please ask your parent or carer to share your work on Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, tagging @OakNational and @TeachTMcCartney #LearnwithOak.

Well done for such wonderful learning today, everybody.
