- Hello, and welcome to Music with me, Miss Miner.

I'm a music teacher in South London and really, really love what I do.

I'm especially excited about this unit which we'll be going through together.

All about harmony using our voices to effect and with expression.

So let's go.

In this lesson you will need, your body, which of course includes your voice.

Do try and clear away any distractions and turn off any notifications or conversations that you may have running on your device.

Do try and find a quiet place where you will be able to concentrate for the next half an hour.

Okay.

Off we go.

So, our warmup is going to go like this.

I would like to have a listen first to the whole thing and see if you can pick up the pattern.

♪ 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 3, 2, 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 ♪ Did you pick up on the pattern? That's right.

In each sequence of the melody, it gets just one pitch higher using the next number.

Let's try it together slowly and I'd like you to follow my finger.

♪ Off we go ♪ ♪ 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 3, 2, 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2, 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 ♪ ♪ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, I ♪ How did you get on with following that pattern? Great.

Pitch.

The pitch is how high or low a note is.

Pause the video to practise this warmup tracing the pitch with your finger as you sing.

When you've done that, press play and we'll carry on.

What is pitch? Is it the heartbeat of the music? Is it how low or high a sound is? Is it the pattern of sounds or the volume of a sound? Point to the answer you think is correct.

That's right.

It's how low or high a sound is.

So now we're going to learn a song that will eventually work in canon.

And you'll see what that means in just a little while, but have a listen to the melody, first.

♪ Bele mama, bele mama eh ♪ ♪ Bele mama, bele mama eh ♪ ♪ Bele mama, bele mama, bele mama, bele mama ♪ ♪ Bele mama, bele mama eh ♪ So you've probably picked up, although the song is originally from Cameroon the words are not too tricky as there's lots and lots of repetition of the words bele mama.

And what that means is we are going to sing it in a round.

One part will start.

And then the second part will follow with the same melody, but at a delay.

So they will start a little bit later.

And the same thing will happen to the third part.

You have been singing a melody, a melody is the tune.

A series of pitches put together to make a sequence.

When we put those melodies together, each one with a delay even though it was the same melody, it formed a canon, but the melody is the tune.

Pause the video to practise this song.

When you've done that, press play and we'll carry on.

What is a melody? Is it the tune? A series of pictures put together to make a sequence? Is it how low or high a sound is? Is it how fast or slow a sound is? Or is it the volume of a sound? Point to the answer you think is correct.

That's right.

A melody is literally the tune.

What is a canon? Is it a round? Or is it a heavy piece of artillery used to fire cannon balls? What do you think? Absolutely.

In music, it's a round.

So here comes the challenge.

I know lots of you watching this will have had experience of canons before, but it can get even more tricky.

I would like you to sing the melody of Bele Mama and clap the rhythm in canon with yourself, as if you are clapping was the second part, like this.
