Hi, everyone.

Welcome to today's science lesson.

I'm Miss Harris.

What's your name? It's lovely to meet you.

Are you excited about today's lesson? Me too! We're going to be learning all about wildflowers and lots of things that may grow in the wild.

We're going to be describing their appearance and looking at the importance of having lots of wildflowers in our environment.

Now, at the end of the lesson, I'm going to be asking you to tell me what flower you can see in my background.

You might know ready, and I'll give you a hint.

It smells delicious and the smell can help you go to sleep.

It's really known for making you feel really sleepy, okay? So today we are looking at what type of plants grow in the wild.

We're going to start by recapping what a plant needs to grow big and healthy.

We're going to be looking at what wildflowers are, why they're important, looking at some types of wildflowers, and then I'm going to be giving you a wildflower observation to go and do.

You will need an exercise book or a piece of paper, a pencil, you'll need some colouring pencils 'cause I'm going to ask you to draw some pictures of some flowers later, and it's important that you have some colours so that you can identify which ones which, and then you will need your brain.

If you need to go and get any of these things you can pause the video and go and get them now.

Well done.

So we are going to be scientists in today's lesson.

A scientist is a person who studies the world around us, including things living and non-living.

Did you know that? Oh, I'm sure you did.

Now plants and flowers are living things.

So we are going to be looking at those today.

Let's do our star words.

Remember star words are the important words that we are going to be using a lot in this lesson.

So let's practise saying them.

So we're going to do my turn, then your turn.

So I'm going to say it, then you're going to do it.

So you're going to copy each other ready? Star words, star words, star words.

Your turn.

Did you say it? Good job.

Soil, dandelion.

That's a funny word.

Dandelion, lavender, daisies, natural, plants, wildflowers.

Good job.

Now for the next part of our lesson I would like you to go and get your bean plant if you planted one in our first lesson.

And if you didn't, don't worry because this is a picture of my bean plant that I planted last lesson.

If you've got your bean plant I would like you to draw a picture of what it looks like.

If you don't have one you're going to draw my one that you can see here, okay? So pause the video and draw either your bean plant or my bean plant.

You can see here that compared to last week when I planted my kidney bean, it had the coat all the way around it.

But if you look carefully, you can see that the coat of the bean has split and it's getting ready to move into the next stage of its growth.

So not much has changed really but you can see here it's split and there is a teeny tiny root growing out of the bean.

How exciting.

What does your bean plant look like if you've got one? Can you tell your screen? Great job.

Now let's recap what a plant needs to grow healthy.

So we've got lots of sunlight to keep our plant healthy.

Lots of water so it doesn't get thirsty.

Lots of carbon dioxide to help it grow and lots of warmth to help it survive.

Now, if it doesn't have sun light the leaves of a plant are really special because they they use sun light to create their own food.

So it's important that we have lots of warmth from the sunlight to keep our plant nice and healthy because otherwise, if it gets too cold it might freeze and not survive and I know we don't want that to happen, do we? So let's take a look at what wildflower are.

So here you can see I've got a lovely picture of lots of wild plants.

Now, wild plants and flowers can grow without any help from humans.

They are naturally occurring plants and wildflowers are often lots of different colours and sizes and grow in a variety of different places.

In particular, you may have heard of something called a ferm plant.

Now these are plants that can grow almost anywhere.

They can grow absolutely anywhere.

You might, if you look really closely on your next walk you might see some grass or some fern plants growing on the top of a brick wall, because sometimes this can happen and you can see here all of these wild plants are beautiful colours and sizes.

So why are wildflowers important? Now wildflowers are really important in our environment and we must try and avoid to pick them because they are a rich habitat for lots of insects.

That means they provide a home for lots of our wildlife.

They also provide pollen for bees so that they can pollinate and take it back to their hive.

Now, wildflowers can also be really helpful to keep the soil nice and healthy and when they grow, they spread their roots to provide lots of nutrients and generate lots of nutrients in the soil.

Now let's take a look at some different types of wildflowers.

So we're going to have a look and I'm going to be asking you to describe what the plant looks like.

So here is our first one, this is a poppy plant.

These are poppies.

What are they called? I didn't hear you say it say it louder.

Poppies.

Well done.

What colour are the poppies? So the petals are red, you're right, and they have a really long stem up to the flower head and the petals of the flower are usually really thin and they often flutter around in the breeze.

What's the name of this flower? A poppy, good.

Now here we have another one called cow parsley.

What's it called? Good.

, now you may have seen cow parsley before because it's really common and it grows in lots of places.

It has a really long stem and then it can grow out into this shape and there are lots of teeny, tiny little flowers with lots of little white petals and next time you go on a walk try and spot some cow parsley.

I'm going to ask you some questions.

What colour are the petals of cow parsley here? Now do cow parsley, does it have a long stem or a short stem? Good it has a long stem.

Now is there just one flower or lots of little flowers> Lots of little flowers, well done.

Now this is called lavender.

What's it called? Lavender, well done.

Lavender is another type of wild plant.

Lavender smells really beautiful and if you rub your hands onto the purple petals of the flower, you can get the fragrance of the flower onto your hand and can you smell it like this.

Often people use lavender in their homes or in places like spas to keep them nice and relaxed because the smell is really relaxing.

Now, lavender, they have really thin and tall stems and the petals and the flowers grow around the top of the stem and they're often quite narrow plants which you can see here.

Now it's time for a pause point.

I would like you to look at each picture and tell me what is the name of each of these flowers? Pause the video and do that now.

Well done.

Let's check.

So we've got poppies the red one here, lavender in the middle the purple ones, and cow parsley over the other side which are the teeny tiny little white flowers.

Well done.

Should we learn about some more wildflowers? Good okay.

So these ones are really recognised ones.

I'm sure you know what these are.

They are called daisies.

Well done.

Daisies are another type of wildflower and they often grow on grass.

You may have seen lots of daisies maybe on your school field or maybe in your garden and they are a tiny little flower that have lots of white petals around the outside and they're really common like I said, to grow in the grass.

We've then got something called dandelions.

Your turn.

So dandelions, often people pick them and they remove them from their garden because dandelions are known as a type of weed so they grow absolutely anywhere.

So if you've got a nice flat concrete driveway to your house, or maybe some pathways around your flat you might have seen some dandelions grow before because they can grow anywhere and often people pick them up because they don't like them.

Dandelions are really important to our environment because they provide a home for lots of wonderful insects and what happens is you can see the yellow flower over the other side, over time all the petals will fall out and we'll be left here with the seeds of a dandelion and often you can blow it and go like this and it will look like we can see here.

The seeds can be blown and dispersed around the environment which is why they grow so easily because their seeds are almost like a little umbrella and they fly around in the air.

And when they land, they can just grow almost anywhere.

So let's take a moment now to look at why wildflowers are important, but first I would like you to draw and label five different types of wildflowers.

So put all the pictures here and the names over the other side.

So first draw the picture of the flower and then write the name underneath.

You can use your colouring pencils, if you would like to if you've got them, if not, don't worry.

You can just look really carefully at drawing the shape of the flowers.

Well done.

So let's look at why wallflowers are important.

So let's read the first sentence.

Wallflowers provide a habitat for lots of.

So do they provide a habitat for lots of bees, for soil, or for insects? Look at the words at the bottom.

So remember I've already told you earlier why wildflowers are important.

So I'd like to think carefully and write the sentence down and fill in the gaps.

So pause the video and do that now.

Well done let's do the next one.

So wildflowers, how keep hmm healthy.

What do they keep healthy? Bees, soil, or insects.

Look at the words at the bottom.

Pause the video.

Write that sentence down and fill in the gap.

Great job.

And let's do the last one.

Mm need flowers for their pollen.

Is it bees, soil, or insects that need flowers for their pollen? Pause the video, write that sentence down and fill in the gap.

Well done.

Now pick up your pencil or your coloured pencil and we are going to tick or fix.

So we're going to check that we've got the right answer.

And if we haven't, don't worry.

We're going to put a nice neat lines through it and write it above.

So wildflowers provide a habitat for lots of insects, give yourself a tick if you wrote insects, if you didn't don't worry.

I'm going to give you your chance at the end to correct your answer.

Then we've got this one here.

Wildflowers help keep soil healthy.

Sorry.

Wildflowers help keep soil healthy.

If you wrote the word soil, give yourself a tick.

If you didn't, don't worry.

We're going to fix it in a moment.

And the last one, bees need flowers for their pollen.

Now, if you've got any of those wrong, don't worry.

Now's the chance to pause the video and correct your answer using your coloured pen or pencil.

So pause the video, do that now.

Well done.

Now this week, I'm going to set you a little bit of homework that you can choose to do if you want to, you don't have to do it.

I would like you to go on a wildflower observation.

I would like you to go for a walk and look outside and see whether you can find some wildflowers that we have learned about today or maybe you would like to find some new ones and you can write down and draw pictures of what they look like.

So first you need to go outside, then you're going to look for some flowers.

So maybe when you go to the park will be the best place to see some wildflowers because the flowers in your garden might not be wild because maybe someone in your family planted them in the garden, and then you're going to draw a picture of your flower and you can maybe do some research to find out what the name of the plant is.

So now it's time for our end of lesson quiz.

Do you like my picture? It's me riding a bee.

We have got three questions in our quiz today for you to see if you can answer them.

Do you think you can get them all right? I'm sure that you can because you've learnt so much today.

Now, do you think you can tell me what flower is in my background? We've learned about it today.

What's it called? Lavender.

Well done.

These flowers are called lavender and they can grow almost anywhere and they smell really great.

So well done, you've worked so hard today I would like to do something very special.

Should we do a rainbow cheer? Do you know what that is? You don't? So you're going to hold your hands out like this and we're going to make a rainbow, imaginary rainbow with our hands and we're going to go like this.

Did you think you can do that with me? Hold your hands up.

Ready? Three, two, one.

Great job.

You worked really, really hard today and I'm really proud you and I can't wait to see your wonderful work next time.

Have a great rest of your day and I'll see you very soon.

Bye.
