You can order numbers from the smallest to the largest or from the largest to the smallest. The order stays the same when you count.

A count or measurement that is an idea in our minds. The number is an idea, the numeral is how we write it.

In this unit pupils will consolidate counting to 20 and back. They will secure their understanding of the teens numbers in a cardinal and an ordinal context. In the future unit pupils will extend their counting to counting the decade numbers and making representations using a variety of different manipulatives.

In prior learning, pupils will have learnt to count confidently and have developed a deep understanding of the numbers to 10, the relationships between them and the patterns within those numbers. In this unit pupils will consolidate counting to 20 and back and will secure their understanding of the teens numbers in a cardinal and an ordinal context.

What is the next number if we count on using our hands?

How many pencils are there in this image?

How many circles can you see? Try to answer without counting

How many triangles can you see? Try to answer without counting all the shapes.

Can you count each set of objects and match them to their numeral?

Which number comes next when we count  "6, 7, ...." ?

Which number is missing from the count? 2,3,4,6,7?

Which number is missing when we count backwards from 10? 10, 9, 8, 6?
