Hi, everyone.
My name's Mr. Pate, and I'm looking forward to doing some great singing with you in today's lesson.
This unit is called Singing for Performance: Changing Tempo and Dynamics in Our Songs.
And in this lesson, we'll be singing with character and feeling.
By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to respond to and sing songs that have different feelings or moods.
And here's some of the words we'll be using in today's lesson: We'll be singing, which is creating musical sounds with our voice that can be a mixture of high and low sounds.
And we'll be adding in some actions, movements and facial expressions to do while we're singing a song.
Before we start, it's important to warm up our voices and our body before every music lesson.
This makes sure all of our muscles, even those really tiny ones in our throat, are ready to move and sing.
And this helps keep our voice strong and healthy.

We're gonna start by giving our hands a good shake.
So put your hand in the air.
We're gonna shake it 16 times.
Then we're gonna move into the other one.

For this first one, we're gonna pretend we're four years old, and when we breathe in, we're gonna breathe in for four counts, and then we're gonna blow out four times for each of the four candles.

Here are the learning cycles for today's lesson.
We'll start by looking at changing the character of our voice.
Then we'll be singing and moving with feeling.
We can change the character of our voice to suit the different verses of a song.
Think about the warmup song we just sung, "Knock On The Door." What did you do to change your voice when you were trying to sound like a spooky ghost or a tiny mouse or an opera singer? How did you change your voice to suit the different characters? Izzy says, "I made my voice sound like a baby crying and sang louder for the first verse." Sofia said, "I made my voice really squeaky and sang really quietly for the mouse verse." These are great ways of changing your voice to suit the character or the feeling of a song.
Let's sing the song "Bunny Boogie," which is a song about a bunny's mood changing over the course of a day.
First, let's practice singing the song through together.

Let's practice the song again, thinking carefully about how you'll use your voice to show the different feelings in each verse.

Now let's have a look at singing and moving with feeling.
Music can make us feel different emotions and feelings, and we can show how we are feeling by the way in which we sing.
We can change our voice to match the feelings of a song and our body movements and our facial expressions can also help us to show different feelings.

While you are listening, I'd like you to think, what is the different feeling that each verse has? And maybe while you're listening, you could start showing the actions that the animals might do.

How did adding movement change your singing performance? Lucas says, "Moving helped me to match the energy of each of the different verses." Izzy says, "Adding movement helped to make the performance more interesting to watch." These are both great reasons to add movement and actions into your singing performances.
Today, we've learned that music can make us feel different emotions, and we can show this in our singing.
We've learned that we can change the character and feeling of our voice to create different moods in a song, and we've learned that we can use our faces and bodies to emphasize the mood or character of a song while we're singing.
