Hi there, welcome to your next remote learning lesson on an introduction to target games.
Today's lesson is called accuracy, can you throw accurately to score points against an opponent?
My name's Miss Hacking and I'm really looking forward to being your teacher today.
So for this lesson, you are going to need some equipment.
So the first piece of equipment you're going to need is an object to throw.
So this might be maybe a soft ball or a rolled-up pair of socks.
You are also going to need eight targets.
Now, for the targets you might want to use soft toys, shoes, books, or perhaps cushions or something else that you have access to.
And you are also going to need a timer.
So this could be on a smartphone or on a watch or on a clock.
You might want to pause the video now so you've got time to go and get the equipment you need ready for today's lesson.
So by the end of today's lesson, I'm hoping that we can all throw accurately towards a range of different targets while playing against an opponent.
Before we start today's lesson it's important that we do complete a warmup.
And in this warmup you're going to show what you know about throwing accurately.
So you're going to start with two balls or two rolled-up socks in your hands.
You'll throw one, then move further away and try to hit this ball with the second ball.
Repeat this until you hit it accurately, and if you are with a partner, try hitting their ball too.
You might want to challenge yourself to move further away from your first ball, just to make it a bit harder, and try and hit the targets when you are not too close to them.
Can you change how you throw your object?
Maybe you want to try throwing your object with different hands to try and challenge yourself a bit more.
Now there is a video showing now of how to complete this warmup.
So watch the video, then pause, and get yourself warmed up.
Our keywords today, let's do my turn, your turn.
So the first keyword, my turn, opponent, your turn.
So an opponent is a personal team that you compete against in a game, sport or physical activity.
Our second keyword, my turn points, your turn.
So points are the units of scoring earned for achieving a goal, completing a task, or performing well in a game or activity.
And our final keyword, my turn, honesty, your turn.
So honesty is a quality of being truthful and fair in your words and actions and I hope that you already have a lot of honesty in everything that you do.
So today's lesson is split into two parts.
In the first part of today's lesson, we're going to be throwing accurately to score points.
And in the second part of today's lesson, we're going to be throwing accurately to beat an opponent.
Are you ready to get started?
Let's go.
Today, Andeep is working by himself, whereas Sofia is working with her cousin, Sam, they're working on throwing accurately and will use rolled-up socks as balls.
In today's lesson, there is going to be an element of competition and trying to score points, and Andeep has said "We need to use concentration to help us to focus on the target when we are competing to score points," and that's really important, when we're trying to throw accurately, we need to concentrate on that target to make sure that we're accurate and the more accurate we can be, the more points we can score.
And Sofia said, "Trying to achieve our best even if we aren't winning requires resilience.
" So resilience means that we keep trying even if things are hard.
So sometimes in life we have to show a lot of resilience to be able to keep going even if for example, in a game we are not winning.
Okay, let's have a go to quick check, shall we?
Trying to achieve our best, even if we aren't winning requires us to have what?
Is it A, a big throw, is it B, concentration, is it C, resilience, or is it D, power?
What do you think?
Well done if you said C, resilience.
Resilience is the ability to keep trying even if we are not winning.
So we want to achieve our best, so we will keep trying even if we aren't winning to show resilience.
Okay, so in today's lesson we're going to be accurately throwing a ball.
So to accurately throw a ball, we're going to use an underarm throw, stand with the opposite foot forward, so if you hold the ball in your right hand, for example, you want to step forward with your left foot, and vice versa, if you hold the ball in your left foot, you want to step forward with your right foot, keep your eyes on the target and follow through with your hand after releasing the ball towards the target.
Okay, so just like the video on the screen, you can see that the hand follows through in a direction towards a target.
And Jacob's reminded us that, "Underarm throws are used for shorter, more accurate throws, especially inside the house.
" So it's important that we are not throwing overarm or with too much power inside the house because we don't want to break anything while we are doing this lesson.
So Sam and Sofia are playing against each other, which means they are opponents.
They've set up four targets for the opponent to try and hit, and every time they hit their opponent's target, they score a point.
So Sam is trying to hit the pink targets and Sofia is trying to hit the green targets.
Sam said that maintaining accuracy while playing against an opponent requires throwing with control, and it does.
So thinking about the amount of power you use and also how you can make your throw really accurate through things like following through towards your target and keeping the eyes on the target you are aiming for.
Andeep is playing against himself and he's going to try and beat his score.
He has made four targets to hit and has set a timer for five minutes.
Andeep will count how many points he scores in five minutes.
So every time he hits one of the targets he gets a point and he keeps adding up his points to see how many he scores in five minutes.
So then Andeep will try and beat his score by playing again for five minutes to see if he can be even more accurate a second time.
It's important to accurately count your points to keep the score correctly because this shows honesty and means you are not cheating.
So quick check then, how can you make sure you play fairly?
Would it be A, make up the number of points, Would it be B, keep score with honesty?
Would it be C, don't let the opponent take a turn.
Which one would be making sure you play fairly?
Well done if you said to play fairly, you need to keep score with honesty, and making sure that you only count the points when you hit the target correctly.
Okay, so now it's time for our turn to have a go at the task.
So if you are working with a partner today, you're going to set up four targets, which could be cushions or toys or something else that you have around, and you are going to set them up for your opponent to hit.
Your partner also sets up four targets for you to hit.
You're going to take it in turns to use an under arm throw to get your ball or rolled-up socks towards your opponent's target.
You have five minutes each to see how many targets you can hit and keep track of your score honestly.
But if you're working on your own today, like Andeep, you're going to set up four targets.
You're going to use an under arm throw to send a ball or rolled-up socks accurately towards the targets.
You get one point every time you hit one of the targets and count how many points you can score in five minutes.
You're gonna then going to try again and see if you can beat your first score.
There is a video showing now of how to complete this task if you're a little bit unsure, so watch the video, then pause, and have a go at throwing accurately towards the targets.
Okay, let's reflect on task A, move.
Maintaining accuracy when playing against an opponent requires throwing with control.
And Andeep said that "I maintained accuracy with my throwing the second time I competed against myself and scored more points by being accurate.
" So maybe you were like Andeep and the more that you practiced, the more accurate you became.
Think, concentration helps us to focus on the target when we're competing against an opponent.
And Sofia said that I had to concentrate really hard to maintain my accuracy when I was competing against my cousin.
And did you, did you concentrate really hard to make sure you were accurate?
I bet you did.
Feel, striving to achieve our best even if we aren't winning requires resilience.
And Andeep said that "I had to show resilience when I kept missing the targets, but I didn't give up," and I hope you didn't give up too, that even if you didn't hit the targets every time that you kept going for the full five minutes to keep improving and to keep winning some points.
And finally, connect, playing fairly against others helps everyone enjoy the competition.
And Sofia said that "I kept the score honestly to ensure that I was playing fairly against my opponent, and I hope that you kept your score honestly too.
Well done for completing task A.
Now it's time to move on to the second part of today's lesson.
We're going to be throwing accurately to beat an opponent.
So sometimes when we play games we don't just want to score points but we want to beat an opponent.
An opponent can be someone else you compete against or it can be yourself if you are trying to beat your last score.
Andeep said that "Maintaining accuracy when playing against an opponent needs controlled throwing actions," and he's right in order for us to be successful.
Sofia said, "Yes, it's important you don't throw with too much power," and that's important because if we throw with too much power, we are going to miss the targets by throwing too hard.
Okay, let's have a go to quick check.
How can you make sure you throw with control?
Would it be A, using lots of power, would it be B, don't use too much power, or would it be C, to throw really quickly, what do you think?
Well done if you said B, don't use too much power, because if you throw it too much power then you're going to miss the targets and you wouldn't be as accurate.
Okay, Sam and Sofia have four targets each for their opponents to try and hit, and every time they hit one of their opponent's targets, they take that target and add it onto their side.
They beat their opponent if they hit and take all their opponent's targets.
So here, Sam had hit one of Sofia's targets and therefore moved it onto her side.
So then she has less targets to try and hit because she's trying to get all her targets onto her side.
So again, she's hit another of Sofia's targets, so moved it across to her side.
And another one, so now she only has one target to hit, and finally Sam wins because Sam removed all the targets from Sofia's side by hitting them accurately.
And here in this example, Sofia hasn't hit any of her targets.
However, they are able to win back one of their targets if they hit it when it's on their opponent's side.
So here, Sam has hit one of Sofia's targets and moved it across to her side.
However, Sofia hits it accurately with her throw so then is able to move it back onto her side.
Sofia said that "Playing fairly against others helps everyone enjoy the competition.
" Can you think of how you can play fairly in this game?
It's probably thinking about making sure you only remove a target to your side if you hit it accurately.
So Andeep is playing the same game, but he's timing how fast he can get all the targets from the opposite side to his side.
So he wants to be accurate but quite quickly so that he can move all the targets to his side as quickly as possible.
So here he's hit one, then two, then three, then four.
When he is hit all four targets, he'll stop the stopwatch to see how long it took him.
He'll then try to see if he can beat his time by doing the activity again, but even faster and with greater accuracy.
So the more accurate he is, the quicker he will be able to get the targets onto his side.
Okay, a quick check then.
True or false, you have to play against someone else to make a game competitive.
Is that true or false?
Well done if you said false, but can you tell me why?
So I'm hoping that you said no because you can play against yourself to try and beat your last score or best points.
So you don't always need another opponent.
Your opponent can be yourself because you're trying to beat your previous score.
So well done if you said something along those lines.
Okay, now it's time for our second task of the lesson.
So if you're playing against a partner today, you're going to set up four targets for your opponent to aim at.
Take turns throwing a ball of rolled-up socks towards your opponent's target.
Every time you hit one of their targets, you take that target and add it to your side.
If they hit a target on your side, they take it and add it to their side.
The winner is a person who manages to take all the targets from their opponent's side.
So that's if you're playing with someone else today.
And if you're playing by yourself today, you're going to set up four targets on one side of the room, stand a short distance away and throw a ball or rolled-up socks towards a target.
Every time you hit a target, move it to a new area on the opposite side of the room, keep throwing and try to move all four targets from the starting side to the other side.
Once you've moved all the targets across your space, set them back up and see if you can do it in a faster time the second time, so you're trying to beat your first time.
There is a video showing now of how to complete this task if you're a little bit unsure, but I think you're going to be really accurate with your underarm throws towards the target.
Okay, let's reflect on our second task of the lesson, move.
Maintaining accuracy when playing against an opponent requires throwing with control.
And Andeep said that "I maintained accuracy and control by hitting the targets and not using too much power.
" Think, concentration helps us to focus on the target when we're competing against an opponent.
And Sofia said that "I had to concentrate to hit my opponent's target and not get distracted when she hit mine.
" So it's really important that you concentrate on hitting your targets, trying to ignore your opponent if they are playing well because that might distract you.
Feel, striving to achieve our best even if we aren't winning requires resilience, and Andeep said, "I showed resilience by continuing to play even when I kept missing some targets.
" And I hope you did too, that even if you didn't hit the target every time, you were still improving and still trying to continue and you were still trying to throw those balls accurately to ensure that you continue to improve.
And connect, playing fairly against others helps everyone enjoy the competition.
And Sofia said that I kept score honestly to ensure that I was playing fairly against my opponent.
And I'm sure that you kept your score honestly too, and you only moved a target when you hit it.
So well done if you did that.
Okay, so before we finish today's lesson, we are going to cool down our bodies.
So what I'd like you to do is create a target in your space.
You're going to walk or move slowly within the space, using your ball or socks, every five seconds, stop still, and perform an underarm throw towards the target.
Whilst you're moving slowly within the space think about how successful you were when using an accurate throw, which actions were more controlled, and what could you do between now and the next lesson to practice your skills further?
You might want to pause the video now to give yourself an opportunity to complete your cool-down.
And finally, that gives us just enough time left to summarize our key learning points of today's lesson.
Move, maintaining accuracy when playing against an opponent requires throwing with control.
Think, concentration helps us to focus on a target when we're competing against an opponent.
Feel, striving to achieve our best even if we aren't winning requires resilience, and connect, playing fairly against others helps everyone enjoy the competition, and I hope that you showed real fairness and honesty in how you played today's games.
I've really enjoyed being your teacher today and I hope you've had fun and improved your throwing with accuracy.
I'll look forward to seeing you again soon.
