Hi there.
Welcome to your remote learning lesson on target games.
My name's Miss Hacking and I'm really looking forward to being your teacher today.
Today's lesson is called Accuracy: Can you outwit an opponent using accurate throwing to win points?
For this lesson, you'll need some equipment.
So can you find an object to throw?
This could be a ball or a rolled up pair of socks, for example.
You need 10 targets.
Now this could be soft toys, shoes, or books that you could use as a target.
Four smaller targets, so something that's a little bit smaller that you could use as a smaller target.
And you'll also need a timer, so maybe a watch, a phone, or some way of timing yourself.
By the end of today's lesson, I'm hoping that we can apply the correct technique for throwing underarm to score points and beat an opponent.
Our keywords today, let's do my turn, your turn.
My turn, accuracy.
Your turn.
So accuracy means getting as close as possible to your target.
Our second key word: My turn, underarm.
Your turn.
Underarm is a throwing action where the arm doesn't go above the shoulder so it stays below the shoulder.
And our final key word is: my turn, opponent.
Your turn.
And an opponent is a person or team that you can beat against in a game, sport or physical activity.
Before we start today's lesson, it's important that we warm our bodies up.
So for today's warmup, can you show what you know about throwing accurately?
I'd like you to place different targets in spaces around the room using cuddly toys, books or cushions.
Move around in a space with a ball or rolled up socks in your hand.
Every 10 seconds, try and hit one of the targets by throwing accurately.
Challenge yourself to hit all the targets at least once.
Try and hit the targets when you are not so close to them.
And could you change how you throw your object?
If you are unsure, there's a video following this slide now, so you may want to watch the video then pause so that you are able to complete your warmup.
Our lesson today is split into two parts.
In the first part of today's lesson, we're going to throw accurately to win points.
And in the second part of today's lesson, we're going to throw tactically to outwit an opponent.
This sounds like a good lesson.
Are you ready to get started?
Let's go.
So today, Sofia is working by herself and Lucas is working with his friend Alex.
They're working on throwing accurately using either a softball or rolled up socks.
They're working on their accuracy when throwing over a short distance.
I wonder if you know what type of throw we would do over a short distance.
Well done if you thought about throwing an underarm throw over a short distance.
Now to accurately throw the ball, we use an underarm throw.
So you stand with the opposite foot forward.
So I hold the ball in my right hand, which means I'm going to step forward with my left foot.
So decide which hand you like to hold the ball in and stand forward with your other foot.
Keep your eyes on the target.
Follow through with your hand after releasing the ball.
So make sure that you don't release it halfway, you follow through with your hand just like on the image.
And Jacob's reminded us that underarm throws are used for shorter, more accurate throws, especially inside the house.
We wouldn't use over arm throws inside the house often because we wouldn't want to break anything or damage anything inside the house.
Okay, let's have a go at a quick check.
True or false?
It is best to use an over ram throw for short distances in the house.
That's false.
Can you tell me why?
Yeah, we use underarm throws for shorter and more accurate throws, especially inside the house so we don't damage anything inside the house.
Lucas and Alex have up five targets or battleships for the other person to try and hit using an accurate underarm throw.
If they hit their opponent's battleship, they win that battleship and can move it onto their side.
So here we can see that Lucas has won two of Alex's battleships and move two of his green markers across to his side.
Sofia sets up five targets or battleships to hit using an accurate underarm throw.
Every time she hits one, she can remove it from the game.
She times how long it takes her to hit or sink all the battleships.
So Sofia is working by herself, so has set up her own battleships and she's gonna see how long it takes her to sink all the battleships by hitting them accurately with an underarm throw.
After her first turn, Sofia puts all the targets back and tries again.
This time she tries to sink all the battleships in a faster time, so she's seeing if she can be even more accurate, even quicker.
Okay, let's have a quick check.
When throwing under arm, which foot should we use to step forward?
Is it A, the opposite to the throwing arm?
Is it B, the same as a throwing arm?
Or is it C, it doesn't matter?
Well done if you said A, you should step forward with the opposite foot to your throwing arm.
So I hold with my right hand, so I would step forward with my left foot.
Well done if you got that right.
Okay, now it's your turn for a task.
This task is called Battleships.
Now if you are working with a partner, this is the game you are going to play.
So it might be someone in your house, a friend or a family member.
So if you're playing with a partner, both of you need to place five targets or battleships in front of you.
Take turns to use an underarm throw aiming accurately at your opponent's battleships.
If you hit one of your opponent's targets, you win that target and may move it to your side.
You win when you have removed all of your partner's battleships from their side.
So you are trying to aim at your partner's battleships so that you can get them back onto your side.
Solo battleships is if you are playing by yourself today.
So if you're playing by yourself, place five targets or battleships in front of you.
Using an underarm throw, aim to hit each battleship.
If you hit one, remove it from the game, and you're going to time how long it takes you to sink all of the battleships.
When you've finished, put all the targets back and try to beat your time.
Now if you are unsure how to play this game, there's a video demonstrating how to do it next.
So you might want to watch this video first before attempting to the game.
I think you'll have lots of fun and good luck with the accuracy of your underarm throws.
Okay, now I hope you manage to be really accurate and hit lots of targets with your underarm throws.
Let's reflect on our task.
Move: Stepping forwards with the opposite foot and swinging your arm from low to high enables accurate shots.
Sofia said, "I remembered to step forward with my opposite foot When aiming to hit the battleships.
" Did you?
Did you remember to step forward with that opposite foot so that you are really accurately able to hit your targets?
Think: making effective decisions about which target to aim for requires tactical thinking.
Lucas said, "I aimed at the targets near me and then tried to hit the ones further away.
" So his tactic was to get rid of the ones closer and then to get rid of the ones further away.
I wonder if you had any tactics in either trying to beat your partner or trying to get rid of the targets as quickly as possible.
Feel: persevering even if you miss a target shows resilience.
Sofia said, "I kept trying to be accurate even when I didn't do as well in my second turn.
" So that's important, because actually, it's hard to always hit our target every time.
So did you keep going, even if you missed a target?
You quickly picked up your ball and tried again.
I hope you did.
And connect: playing fairly and by all the rules helps everyone enjoy the game and shows respect.
Lucas said that "I followed the rules of the game and only moved a battleship to my side when I hit it.
" So he was really honest and played to the rules.
Did you, did you stick to the rules of the game and only move a battleship when you hit it?
I bet you did.
Well done if you did all of those things.
Okay, let's move on to the second part of today's lesson.
We're going to throw tactically to outwit an opponent.
Sometimes in games, you can try to outwit an opponent by using tactics.
A tactic is a plan you create and use to try to win or succeed.
Using tactics to decide which target you want to hit might help you be better than your opponent.
Okay, let's have a quick check.
What do we call a plan you create and use to try and win or succeed?
Is it A, cheating?
Is it B, a tactic?
Or is it C, an opposition?
What do you think?
Well done if you said B, a tactic.
A tactic is a plan you create and use to try and win or succeed.
So well don if you got that right.
Lucas and Alex have placed five targets or battleships, but also two smaller targets which are lifeboats in front of them.
In this game, if a battleship is hit, it is removed from the game.
But if your opponent hits a smaller target like a lifeboat, then they can bring back one of their battleships that was removed.
The lifeboat does not sink.
Sofia sets up five targets or battleships and two smaller targets, which are the lifeboats.
Every time she hits a battleship, she removes it from the game.
She has two minutes to sink all of her battleships, but if she hits a lifeboat, one of the smaller targets, she adds 10 more seconds onto her time.
Sofia says, "It's important to always play fairly, even if you're playing by yourself.
" Can you think of an example of how to play fairly?
You might have said like Lucas, "By following the rules correctly and keeping the score honestly.
" That's a good way to play fairly.
Okay, let's have a quick check.
How can you play fairly?
Would it be A, to make up the score?
Or B, don't let anyone else have a turn?
C, keep changing the rules so you win?
Or D, keep the score honestly?
Well done if you said D.
Keeping the score honestly is an example of how you can play fairly, which I'm sure that you'd do in any type of game that you play.
Okay, now it's your turn to have a go at the second task of the lesson.
It's battleships with lifeboats.
Now if you're playing with a partner, I'd like you to set up five battleships each and two smaller targets, which are the lifeboats.
Take turns to use an under arm throw to hit your opponent's battleships.
If a battleship is hit, it is removed from the game.
If your opponent hits one of your lifeboats, they're allowed to bring back a battleship that was removed.
You win when all of your opponent's battleships have been removed from the game.
Lifeboats do not sink.
Solo battleships with lifeboats: So if you're playing by yourself, you need to set up five targets, which are the battleships, and two smaller targets, which are the lifeboats.
Using your underarm throw, aim to hit each battleship.
Every time you hit one, remove it from the game.
You have two minutes to sink all of your battleships.
If you hit a lifeboat, which is one of the smaller targets, you're allowed to add 10 seconds onto your time so you have a bit longer to remove all the battleships.
Now, you might want to watch the video next that shows you how to play this game, battleships with lifeboats.
And then, it would be good to pause the video so that you can have a go at playing this game.
I wonder how quickly you can sink all your opponent's battleships or all your battleships.
Good luck.
Okay, I hope you had lots of fun playing battleships with lifeboats.
Let's have a little reflect on that task.
Move: stepping forwards with the opposite foot and swinging your arm from low to high enables accurate shots.
And Sofia said that, "I moved my arm from low to high and finished with it facing a battleship I wanted to sink.
" Did you, did you always move your arm low to high as you released the ball?
And like Sofia, did you aim your hand at the battleship you wanted to sink to help with your accuracy?
Think: making effective decisions about which target to aim for requires tactical thinking.
And Lucas has said, "When three of my ships had been sunk, I chose to hit the lifeboat so I could get my ships back.
" And that's a good idea.
He used the lifeboats to tactically gain advantage to get his ships back in the game, so well done, Lucas.
Did you use any tactics in this game?
Feel: persevering, even if you miss a target, shows resilience.
And Sofia says that, "Even when I missed a target, I kept trying and didn't give up.
" And I hope you did too, that even if you missed a target, you kept going with the game until you sunk all your opponents of all your battleships.
Connect: playing fairly and by all the rules helps everyone enjoy the game and shows respect.
And Lucas said that, "I followed the rules of the game and only put one battleship back in when I hit the lifeboat.
" So again, he played by the rules and I hope you did too, just to make sure that it was fair for everyone.
Okay, we are nearly at the end of today's lesson, so therefore we need to do a cool down.
For today's cool down, I'd like you to create a target in your space, so put down one of your battleships back on the floor.
Collect your ball or socks and hold them as you walk around all the space.
Every five seconds, stop still and perform an underarm throw.
See how close you can get it to your target.
While you're doing your cool down, I'd like you to reflect.
Whilst you're moving slowly within the space, think about how you were successful when using an accurate throw.
Which actions were more controlled?
And commitment, what could you do between now and the next lesson to practice your skills further?
You might want to pause the video now to give yourself time to do the cool down.
And finally, we've got just enough time to summarize today's lesson.
Move: stepping forwards with the opposite foot and swinging your arm from low to high enables accurate shots.
Think: making effective decisions about which target to aim for requires tactical thinking.
Feel: persevering even if you miss a target shows resilience.
Connect: playing fairly and by all the rules helps everyone enjoy the game and shows respect.
Now, I hope you've had lots of fun in today's lesson playing Battleships with Lifeboats, and I hope that your accuracy of your under arm has also improved.
I'll look forward to seeing you again soon.
