﻿These are the things that you and your learning partner needs remember for every lesson that we do. You need to be ready to learn. Your learning partner will know how to help you, and when you're ready They'll know in what position, where, and what time you learn best. When you're learning isn't engaging, it's okay to stop. They'll also know what things are safe for you to do, especially when you taste, touch and explore. Particularly if you've got allergies or other medical conditions. You will do things for yourself as much as possible, finding things, discovering, exploring, and making your own sounds or movements no matter how small. You should control things as much as possible. Independent discovery is the key to your learning and for you to make great progress. Whenever you've exploring, it's good for the person working with you to stop, wait and see if you'd like to do something again. Or if you want more of something, you might have a way of doing this that's clear already, or you might just be starting to do that. You'll need time. You might take a long time over this lesson or a short time. It depends what you think to what we're exploring or how you're feeling. You can repeat this lesson as many times as you like. The person working with you might need to wait quietly for you to work out what it is that you want to do. People sometimes call this processing time, because I know that your body doesn't do what you want it to do straight away. I might use lots of words at the start of a lesson so that you and your learning partner know what it is that you're going to do, what it is that you need to get ready. But when you're learning together, they'll always be really clear in their language because you're just starting to know what words mean. If you've got a communication book or a device, the person working with you will help you practise using really helpful words, like more and stop. Words like this core words, and they're really useful for you to exert control. To help you understand new words, a person working with you can model these on your communication device or communication book if you've got one. You might just be starting to notice things using your senses. The person working with you will know how you do this and when you're doing something new or something really amazing. Sometimes we'll do things that you like, and sometimes we'll do things that you don't like. That's okay, it's your chance to say stop, or I don't like it in whatever way you can. If it's upsets you or it isn't safe, it's really important to stop. If you belong to a school, I'm sure your teacher would love to hear about any brilliant work that you do during your Oak sessions. Hello, my name's Kate. And today it's time for our performance session. And today it's drama. So to get ready, all the things that you need are on the next slide. So if you pause and you and the person that you're working with can get all the things ready that we need to do our work today. In a moment, pause the video to gather your resources together for our learning today. Things that you will need, a piece of velvet fabric or some soft fabric. If you have some perfume or aftershave or scent, that's okay for you to have on, you can use that too. Uncooked dry rice and some cooked rice. If it's still warm, that'd be even better. Cinnamon or cassia bark, thyme, tomatoes or onions or chilies, or any ingredients that you want to taste or explore from jollof rice. A necklace or bracelet, or some chains gold or silver colour would be best. Flowers, if you can find fresh ones that have a scent, that would be great. Some African music, I really liked the song Pata Pata by Miriam Makeba. Once you have everything ready, you can resume the video. Firstly, you need to get ready to learn. This is what you'll need. You'll need some music to help you remember this session, and remember that it's time for drama. A piece of velvet or soft fabric and some scent that can go on it. You also need most importantly, the support or activities that help you and your body to get ready to learn. Now, to tell us that it's time for drama, I found this piece of soft velvet fabric, and I'm going to spray it with my favourite, my best perfume, 'cause I was thinking at the theatre, you might see heavy velvet curtains, even at the cinema as well sometimes. And if you're going out, you might spray your favourite perfume or aftershave because it might be a special event. So, to help us remember that it's time for drama, I'd like you to feel the fabric because the velvet's going to feel soft. And it's going to smell of that really special perfume as well. And together, I think we could use a really dramatic voice because it's time for drama. So the person working with you might need to use that best, most Shakespearean dramatic voice to say, it's time for drama. It's time for drama. Let's get ready. Let's get ready. It's time for drama. It's time for drama. Let's get ready. Let's get ready. Now, I know some of you as well, might need a little bit of help getting your bodies ready to do your best work. So, on the next slide you can pause, maybe listen to some calm, gentle music and stretch out parts of your body that you're going to use for our drama session. So you might want to stretch your arms out. You might want to stretch or massage your hands and your fingers out too. There might be something else that you need to do to get your body ready to do your best work. So pause at the next slide, and then you can get ready to do our work. For our drama session were travelling to Africa and we're going to take our inspiration from this book called the "Children of Blood and Bone" by an author called Tomi Adeyem. And she takes a lot of her inspiration from stories and traditions from West Africa. And we're going to think about a part of the book where the main character Zelie feels really, really happy and safe. So I'm going to read this to you now. I try not to think of her, but when I do, I think of rice. When mum was around, the hot always smelled of jollof rice, when she was around, I could smell cinnamon. I remember mama's warm, smile and her arms around me. I remember the colour lilies placed by the window to remind her of her ancestors and her shining gold amulet. So we're going to explore all those things that reminded Zelie of her mom and made her feel really happy. So she talks about rice. So you could explore the dry rice, watch it fall through your hands. It feels soft and cool. Cooked rice feels quite different. I've got some cooked rice here. You might want to taste. You might want to smell, but when you squeeze it, it's really sticky and it might still feel warm if you've cooked it. In jollof rice as well, there's lots of ingredients. If you're feeling really brave, you might want to taste some chilli or some chilli sources as well. There's also thyme in jollof rice, you can try some fresh thyme that you might want to smell and explore, or you can get dry thyme as well. That smells lovely too. You might want to smell some and taste some onions or garlic. Also in jollof rice is tomatoes. So you might want to get some tomatoes and squeeze them and taste them and smell them. You might even want to make some jollof rice yourself. Zelie also talks about the hot smelling of cinnamon, and I've got some caccia bark, which is a bit like cinnamon. Smells beautiful, it smells warm. These pieces are nice and big so you can hold in your hand. It might be a little bit safer. She also talks about the flowers that her mum puts by the window to remember her family members. It depends, you might be able to go to the shop and buy some or find some near your house or in your garden. I found some rosemary outside my house. I'm going to explore that. She talks about her mom's gold amulet. An amulet is something to keep you safe. In my dressing table, I found one of my favourite gold necklaces. So you might find something shiny and bright or something heavy and metal also got this necklace, I got this really special that's come all the way from Africa. You might want to feel the cold, hard metal and watch it shine. I'm going to listen to some African music that makes me feel really happy too. I love the piece called Pata Pata, by a singer called a called Miriam Makeba. And she's from South Africa. Just on the next slide going to play this Pata music for you for a little bit, so you get to know what it sounds like. You might want to choose something different, so you can explore all these things for as long as you like. Remember that the person working with you is going to try and do it with a big smile on their face, because that's what Zelie remembers about her mom. You might want to feel a nice warm, squeeze round your shoulders to make you feel safe and warm. So when you're ready to learn, pause the next slide to do your work.
