﻿- Hello, and welcome everyone to your final lesson in this pop art project. So today, we are going to be evaluating your pop art project. So, what will we be learning in today's lesson? How to describe the artist's work using a mind map, how to form your own opinion on the artist and their work, and how to experiment further with the project. So, the equipment for this lesson. You will need two sheets of paper, colouring pens or pencils, and a pencil. Okay, so before we start that activity, if you stop the video, go and gather up all your equipment and then resume when you are ready. Okay, welcome back, so let's begin. Okay, so I'm going to show you how to create a mind map. Now, this is a great way of getting all your ideas down on a piece of paper. So, I would like you to draw an oval in the centre of one sheet of paper, and then neatly write the word pop art in the centre like you can see on the slide. Okay, well done. Now, what I want you to do is to add additional ovals to the paper. So, as you can see, there are six ovals that all connect to the central oval. So, do it with a pencil. Take your time, stop the video, and then resume when you are ready. Okay, well done. So, what we're going to do now is we're going to have a little think about all the different artists that we have studied during this pop art project. So, wonder whether you can remember that the first artist that we studied, have a little think. Well done if you said Julian Opie. Okay, the second artist was an artist that created an image of Marilyn Monroe. Can you remember his name? Excellent, well done, Andy Warhol. Okay, so this artist used magazines and cutouts from newspapers to create his work, can you remember? Fantastic, Richard Hamilton. Okay, can you remember any of the others? Have a little thin. Well done, Wayne Thiebaud. Okay, this artist created quite big sculptures that were placed in unusual places. Can you remember? Well done, Claes Oldenburg. And the final artists was the only female artist out of all the artists that we looked at. Excellent, well done, Chila Burman. Okay, so make sure you have completed this activity. If you need to stop the video, do so and copy all the names down. Okay, so now we're going to add further ovals, okay, to each of the artist's names. Okay, so you can see that with Julian Opie, there are three ovals and they all connect to his name. So, I'd like you to do that now for every single artist. Okay, so stop the video, complete that activity, and then resume when you are ready. Okay, welcome back. So, what we're going to do now is we are going to describe the artist's work. So, in these smaller ovals, we are going to add some subheadings. So, the first one is subject matter, if you write that in now. Well done. Okay, the next one is appearance. There's a double P in appearance. Copy that down. And then the final subheading is materials and techniques. Okay, so we're going to start off with subject matter. So, Julian Opie created portraits. Okay, a lot of the times it was a celebrity. So, what does portraits mean? Have a little think. Well done if you said faces. So, he focused on heads and shoulders rather than the entire figure. Okay, and then he also created the album cover for the pop group Blur. Now, we're going to focus on the appearance. How would we describe the appearance of his work? Have a little thing. Okay, excellent. Well done if you said bright colours, which generally were quite flat, so there was very little variation in tone. Now, I've also added there minimal detail. So, his portraits were quite simple, but you can still tell that they were portraits. Now, how did you do this? Excellent, well done if you said he added pupils and then nostrils. Okay, and then the final subheading is materials and techniques. So, how did Julian Opie create his artwork? Going to give you a moment to have a little think. Fantastic, well done. Digital art using a computer. Right, so you can add further information to this, okay, if you feel that you have other information to describe Julian Opie's work. Okay, once you have completed that, we're going to move on to the next task. Okay, well done. So, now you have completed Julian Opie, you are going to add those three subheadings to each of the other artists. Okay, and then continue to describe each of the artist's work, focusing on subject matter, appearance, and materials and techniques. Okay, so this might take a while to do so stop the video and then when you are ready, you can resume. Okay, excellent, welcome back. So, now we've completed our mind map, so what we're going to be doing now is we are rating the artists on their work, and then we're going to have a little look at how we can add our own opinions. Okay, so on your next sheet of paper I would like you to write Julian Opie nice and neat. And then I want you to write these four words underneath. So, we have inspiring, we have wow factor, colours, and techniques. Okay, so in terms of inspiring, how inspiring do you find Julian Opie as a person and as an artist? Okay, is he someone that you'd like to know more about and would like to do further research? Okay, so you rate that out of 10, there is no wrong or right, this is your own opinion. Did you get a wow factor when you saw his work? Okay, did you get excited by his work? Okay, what would you rate it out of 10? Okay, how about the colours? Did you like the colours he used in his work or were you not so keen? Okay, so if you really liked the colours in his work, you might rate it eight, nine, or perhaps a 10. Okay, now the techniques. Okay, we created portraits, okay, looking at proportions of the face, and then we added flat colour, and then another technique was tracing. Okay, so how did you find those techniques? Did you enjoy them? Okay, or was it not really something you enjoyed that much? Okay, so complete that task, when you're ready let's move on to the next slide. Okay, well done. So, we are going to do exactly the same for every single artist that we have covered. Okay, so the second one was Andy Warhol, so again, write his name at the top of the page, okay, or next to Julian Opie, and write these four words down again; inspiring, wow factor, colours, and techniques. So, did you find Andy Warhol inspiring as an artist? What would you give him out of 10? Now, when you looked at his artwork, did you get that wow factor? Okay, did you find it interesting? Did you want to know more? Did you want to know how he created his work? What would you give it out of 10? Okay, what about the colours he used? Okay. Were they colours that you really liked? Or were the colours that you didn't really like that much? Okay, so if that's the case and maybe you'd give the colours a rating maybe a little bit lower, perhaps a four or a five. Okay, and then the techniques. Okay, so we created digital art, and then we also added colour to the photograph, and then created a drawing of a tin can, so how did you find those techniques? Okay, rate it out of 10 for me when you're already. Excellent, right, so Richard Hamilton, did you find him inspiring as an artist, as a person? Would you like to know more? Would you be interested in doing further research? Did you get that wow factor? What would you rate it out of 10? And then do the same for colours and then the techniques. This time we created a collage using images that we cut out from magazines and newspapers. Did you enjoy doing that? Did you find it fun? Okay, excellent. Right, so let's look at Wayne Thiebaud. Okay, so do the same again, write his name on the piece of paper and then underneath write these four words again. Okay, so inspiring, what would you give him as a artist out of 10? Okay, so when you looked at his work for the first time, did you get that wow factor? And what about the colours? Now, he used quite pastorally colours, are those are colours that you like? Or did you find them a little bit dull, okay? Remember, this is your opinion, there is no right or wrong. And then finally for techniques. Okay, so we looked at mixed media techniques and then you used the grid method to draw some sweets. Did you enjoy doing that? Or was it not really something that you enjoyed that much, okay? Okay, when you are done, you can move on to the next slide. Excellent, so we're coming to the end. So, now we have Claes Oldenburg. Okay, if you write his name down on the piece of paper, do exactly the same as we've done with the other artists, write the words inspiring, wow factor, colours, and techniques. Okay, so I think you can probably do this quite independently now, we've already done four other artists. So as an artist, did you find him inspiring? Did you get that wow factor when you saw his big sculptures? Did you like the colours he used? And did you enjoy making that burger out of newspaper? Okay. Right, so when you are ready, we'll move on. Okay, so now we're on our final artist, we have Chila Burman. So again, write her name on the piece of paper and we're going to rate her work, okay? So as an artist, did you find her inspiring? Did you like the fact that she used her culture and stories and introduced them into her artwork? Did you get that wow factor when you saw her collages and the sculptures that she created? Okay, did you like the fact that she used lots of different materials? Did you like the colours that she used? They tended to be quite bright, and vibrant, and bold. And how about the techniques? Did you like that we use different materials? Did you enjoy cutting images out of magazines? How did you find the origami ice cream cone? Did you enjoy it? Did you find it a little difficult? Did you like it 'cause it was new? Okay, so what you need to do now, just finish off that and then we'll move on to the next task. Okay, well done. So, we've created a mind map so far, we have rated all six artists. Now, what we're going to do is to think about formulating an opinion and writing it down in a sentence. So, let's have a look at Chila Burman. So, if you've given Chila an eight out of 10 for inspiring, why is it that you gave her eight out of 10 and not five out of 10 or even lower? So, did you find her inspiring because she used her culture and influences from her childhood? Or she linked to it, some of her artwork to her family? And she told stories, maybe that was something that you enjoyed. So, I would like you to now on the back of the sheet of paper, you can write a few sentences down. You don't have to do this for all artists, but maybe choose two different artists. Okay, and write some opinions and give reasonings as to why you've given the ratings that you have. Okay, so I'm gonna give you a little bit of time to do that. And then when you have finished that activity, okay, you can resume the video. Okay, so now the last part is thinking about how you can take this project even further. So, we've looked at the following themes; portraits, tin cans, landscapes, ice cream cones, cupcakes, burger, and ice lolly. And then these are the materials and techniques that we have covered; watercolours, marker pens, colouring pencils, digital art, collage, mixed media, grid method, sculpture, and weaving. So, maybe there was one of these themes that you really liked and a particular technique, or maybe it was a particular material that you liked. So, maybe we can mix it up a little bit. So for example, he might have enjoyed creating portraits, but how about experimenting and doing it with collage? So, you might cut out images from magazines and newspapers to create a collage of a portrait. Perhaps you will create an ice lolly, but this time do it using digital art. It's all about having fun, okay, and experimenting, and exploring. Okay, now another option could be creating a tin can, but using the weaving technique. Or how about creating a cupcake, but creating it as a sculpture. So remember, last time you created a 3D burger, so it's using the same method and techniques, but creating a different outcome. Okay, so these are just some ideas. Okay, so what will you create next? So, have a little think about the themes and what kind of materials and techniques you would like to experiment with, write a few things down. Okay, fantastic. So, if you manage to take this project further and you are experimenting and exploring with different themes, and different materials, and techniques, it will be great to see what you have done.
