﻿Hello, it's Ms. Morgan again. Welcome to our spelling lesson. Today, we're going to be using and applying our knowledge of the suffix: L Y. I bought along Smudge, my dog. Remember L Y words Remember adding the L Y, it turns it into an adverb. Okay? So, Scruff gently sat on my shoulder. Let's get started. On our agenda for today, we're going to revise the rules, then we're going to practise and apply those rules. Then, I'm going to teach you a new spelling strategy, one I think you're really going to enjoy. And then finally, we'll end up with a spelling test. Let's go! So, in this lesson, these three things you're going to need yell them at me: exercise book or paper pencil, and of course that brain ... switch it on! Get ready to go. Everything ready. Oh, key vocabulary for today. Suffix, root word, verb, adverb. Can you have a little wiggle on your chair? Or a wiggle when you're standing up? Do you recognise any of those words, first of all? Do you think you might know the meaning of any of them? I bet you do! Suffix is a group of letters at the end of a word that changes its meaning. So it fixes to the end of the word. The root word is the most basic version of a word. No prefixes and no suffixes. And a verb is a doing or a being word. And adverb describes a verb. Let's see what you can remember. Rough. The table was rough. The ground was rough. Rough is the root word. There are no suffixes and no prefixes. If we add LY to rough, it becomes roughly. He roughly shook the table. LY is the suffix. Rough is an adjective, and roughly is an adverb. What happens to these words when we add LY? Pause, say the words out loud. That's right. Firm becomes firmly. He firmly shook his hand. Clear becomes clearly. He could clearly see the way home. Loud becomes loudly. He shouted so loudly but it hurt his ears. Here is a sentence stem describing what LY does. I'll read it out loud and I want you to try and fill in the gaps with the words below. Get your finger to track as I read along. LY is a type of, Hm. When we add LY to the end of a Hmm it becomes a Hmm. The missing words are suffix, adverb, root word. I'll read it out again. LY is a type of, Hm. When we add a line to the end of a Hmm, it becomes an Hm. Now I want you to pause the video decide which words go in which gaps. And I want you to say the sentence out loud, do this now. Let's see how you got on. LY is a type of suffix. When we add LY to the end of a root word. It becomes an adverb. Well done. Let's look at our big picture. Two out of suffixes. Last lesson we learned about just adding the suffix LY to words. If words ended in a Y we replaced it with an I and with works ended with an E we removed it. Or we added the suffix. Let's see if you can practise and apply these rules It's the word Awful. Add LY to it. Point to which rule you think is going to be. Pause, that's right. We just add LY, Awful becomes Awfully. He was awfully cross. Angry. Add LY to Angry. Point to which rule it is. I can see you. Pause the video. That's right. Did you spot the Y on the end? We change the Y to an I, and we add LY to it. Angry becomes Angrily. He angrily threw down his clothes. Responsible. Point to he rule that you think it is, well done, you spotted an E and then you removed the E and added LY. Responsible becomes Responsibly. Yeah. Cruel, which means mean or nasty. Merry, which is another word for being happy. Can you add the suffix LY to these words? Think about which rule you're going to use. Pause the video, write it down. How did you get on? When I was trying to add LY to Cruel, I just came up with one version, Cruelly. I just added LY and that was the rule there. Merry, came up with two idea. I added LY in the first example and the second example I spotted that there was a Y and I remember that I needed to change the Y to an I and add LY. And that's the correct one. So number two is the correct one here. We now are going to learn a new spelling strategy. This is one of my favourites. You're starting to build up and really great toolbox of ideas on how to practise your spellings. Today. We're going to do the strategy on the bottom. Spot a word within a word. I wonder if you've seen that strategy use before. This word says thoughtfully, thoughtfully. Can you see any words within that word that you might know? You might recognise, pause the video, write them down or say them out loud. I spotted the word thought. The next word I spotted was full as well. And the final word thoughtful. So we spotted three words within a word that's pretty cool. You can either draw it like this like a mind map to help you. Or you can do another strategy like this. This word says carefully, carefully. Can you spot any words within there? I can spot two. The first one I spot is care, I'm just going to underline the word care. So it's sticks in my head. The next word I spot is, again, I'm going to write it even bigger. What's that? We're spotting more words if we are looking carefully. Let's have a look. You spot the word Full in carefully. That's right. And here I've written the word full, bigger letters, so it sticks in my mind. There's another one you found, me too. The word Careful. And I'm writing in bigger letter and I've underlined it to help me. It helps create a visual memory. So why is it the usual strategy? Uses what you know already helps you to visualise the word. Like I said. Now that's your go, choose four of these spellings, and I want you to use a word within a word strategy to practise them now. Pause and do this now. Now it's time for your spelling test. Remember, if you want to do more practise now you can do and come back to the test later or we can just get cracking on. A clean piece of paper. Write the numbers 1 to 10 with each number on a new line. Pause, do this now. I'm going to read the spellings out one by one. I'll say each spelling twice, and in a sentence. Remember you can pause if you need to. And remember if you're stuck you can use that best bet strategy by writing out the different version thinking about the different rules you know. Okay,let's go. Spelling number one, carefully, carefully. He carefully tiptoed into the corridor. Number two, kindly, kindly. They kindly accepted the offer of a cup of tea. Number three, extremely, extremely. It was an extremely tiring day. Number four, excitedly excitedly. We excitedly ran into the room. Number five, painfully painfully. It seemed like this spelling test was painfully long. Number six, hastily, hastily. He hastily finished his lunch. Number seven, Bossily,Bossily. Don't do that said Ms. Morgan, bossily number eight, hungrily, hungrily. She hungrily ate her food. Number nine, incredibly incredibly. It was an incredibly difficult test. Number 10, terribly, terribly. She missed them terribly. Pause the video if you want to get back and check the spellings, otherwise we're going to mark them one by one, and goes through them. Remember, if you make a mistake, it's absolutely fine. It's a learning process for you. Remember you tick if correct. Then you change if not. If you do get something wrong, make sure you copy down the right spelling really carefully. You might want to pause the video to check that you've got this. Number one, carefully. C-A-R-E-F-U double L-Y Number two, kindly. K-I-N-D-L-Y. Number three, extremely. E-X-T-R-E-M-E-L-Y. This is a naughty one because he does have an E on the end. We don't get rid of the E. Number four, excitedly E-X-C-I-T-E-D-L-Y. Number five, painfully, P-A-I-N-F-U-L-L-Y. Number six, hastily. H-A-S-T-I-L-Y. Number seven, bossily. B-O- double S-I-L-Y. Number eight, hungrily H-U-N-G-R-I-L-Y. Number nine, incredibly. I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-Y. Number 10, terribly. T-E double R-I-B-L-Y. Did you remember to take the E's off? Wow. What a busy lesson. We've revised the rules. We've practised those rules, and we've learnt a new strategy of a word within a word. And you've done the spelling test. Now with that word within this word strategy, remember you can spot word within a word everywhere. When you're walking down the street in your house, on your cereal packet, you can spot it absolutely everywhere. Well done. You have worked so hard. Make sure you keep on practising those spellings.
