Hello everyone, my name is Ms. Butt, and today I'm going to be teaching you three new words for you to use on your unit on the day the crayons quit.

Now, I love the story of the day the crayons quit and I know that lots of the characters are feeling a bit fed up in the story, so, today we are going to be learning three words to describe how you feel when you feel bad, I hope that you enjoyed today's lesson, and I hope you are able to use these words in your writing.

Okay, so in today's lesson, we are going to first introduce some new words, then we're going to look at word pairs and synonyms for each word and finally, we're going to have a go at applying these words in sentences.

For today's lesson, you're going to need a piece of paper or a note pad to write in, there's a little bit of writing right at the end of the lesson, a pencil and your brains.

Please also make sure that you clear away anything that's going to distract you, pause the video and get anything that you need so, you're ready for your learning.

Okay, so, before we get started, let's just try to think about what different types of bad feelings or negative feelings are there? Pause the video and have a think.

Well, I'm trying to think of some bad feelings myself, I think one pretty bad feeling is feeling sad, another one is feeling angry, and for me another one is feeling nervous or anxious about something.

I wonder if you came up with those as well.

So, here's some key words we're going to be using today, I say, and then you say a synonym.

Word Pair Adjectives Noun Well done.

A synonym is a word that means exactly or nearly the same as another word, for example you could say Merry Christmas or happy Christmas, merry and happy mean more or less the same thing.

Word pairs are words often appear together, like a bright sun or a bright moon.

An adjective is a describing word, and they very often describe nouns which are person, a place or a thing.

Here is our first feeling bad word, now we always start off by looking at an image because the image is going to give us some clues about what this word means.

I'd like you to be detectives and look very closely at this picture and have a think about what is happening.

How is this character feeling? And why do you think they're feeling that way? Pause the video and have a little think.

To me, this character looks very sad and I can tell that by their body language, this dog's shoulders are slumped over and his hands are hung down, his eyes are drooped and it looks like the reason he's feeling sad is that he had a ball that has got all of the air has gone out of it and therefore he looks like he's all dressed up in his kit, ready to play basketball and now he has got nothing to play with.

Hmm, I wonder what this word is? Let's find out, aah, deflated.

Now, let's say it like we mean it, deflated, well done.

Deflated is an adjective and it means feeling hopeless or let down, when you feel sad and empty, like a ball with the air let out.

So, this picture is actually very clever because not only is the ball deflated because it's been let down and empty, but the character also looks deflated because they feel let down and sad about what's happened to the ball, so, we've actually got two examples of the words deflated here, let's take a look at some words, which could be synonyms for the word deflated.

Ball, feeling hopeless, mood, let down, ballon, saddened, pride, ego and tyre.

Now here's the word in a sentence, the boys stared sadly at his deflated balloon that his friend had popped, deary me, that doesn't sound like a very nice friend.

Now, remember if a word is a synonym, it means nearly the same or exactly the same thing as deflated, so have a look through these words and pause the video to see if you can identify the synonyms. Let's see if you were right, the synonyms are feeling hopeless, let down and saddened.

That means these words are all word pads, and I'm going to read them to you, A deflated ball, a deflated mood, a deflated balloon, deflated pride, now, this is a tricky word, pride is your confidence and your self-respect is kind of how you feel when you're really pleased with your achievements and so if you've got a deflated pride, it might be that you are feeling really confident and feeling really proud of yourself and then suddenly that was all taken away.

Maybe somebody said something to you, which damaged your pride and made it deflated.

An ego, a deflated ego is similar, an ego is your sense of self-importance.

So again, if you have a deflated ego, you might be lacking in confidence or lacking in self importance and finally a deflated tyre.

I wonder if you've ever been in a car before and had to pull over because the tyre has deflated.

Now, when we learn new vocabulary, it's really important that we say the words, because if we just see them in our minds, we won't remember them and when we see them aloud, it makes them stick in our memory.

So, I'd like you now to pause this video and to read the word pairs just like I did, off you go.

Well done everyone, can you remember, what does deflated mean? That's right, it means feeling hopeless or let down, you ready to look at our second image? Aah, Oh my goodness, I'm sure lots of you are very shocked at this image.

What's happening here? Can you tell me what you see? What you notice? How the characters are feeling? Pause the video and have a think.

Well, I can see in this image, it looks like twins and it looks to me like one of them has been very, very naughty and pulled the other one's trousers down.

and the other one who's had their trousers pulled down looks absolutely shocked and very, very embarrassed, okay? Now, that is why this is something we would never do to anyone because we wouldn't want anyone to feel shocked and embarrassed as this character obviously feels and I think that the character who has pulled them down is obviously very naughty character indeed.

Let's find out this word is, humiliated, humiliated.

Now, it's very important that we know that this is the character who is feeling humiliated, okay? And the character on the left.

So, humiliated is an adjective and it means very embarrassed or ashamed, how you feel if someone pulls your trousers down as a joke and now we wouldn't want anyone to feel embarrassed or ashamed, which is why we would never do this.

Let's take a look and see if we can find some synonyms for the word humiliated, ashamed, classmate, crushed, politician, candidate, opponent, contestant, team, pride, and very embarrassed.

Here's the word in a sentence, the children laughed at that humiliated classmate, when he forgot his line in the play, deary me, lots of naughty people in this story.

I definitely wouldn't want my pals to laugh, if someone forgot their line in the play, because that would make somebody feel really humiliated.

So, let's have a think now which words here could replace the word humiliated in that sentence? Which words are synonyms of humiliated? Pause the video and see if you can spot them.

Let's see if you are right, the synonyms of humiliated are ashamed, crushed, and very embarrassed.

And that means the rest of the words are word pairs am going to read them to you.

Humiliated classmates, a humiliated politician, hmm, I wonder what would have to happen to a politician to make them feel humiliated? Perhaps if they made a big mistake in one of their speeches or something like that.

A humiliated candidate, a candidate is someone who applies for something, so for example, you might have a candidate who applies for job, maybe they might feel humiliated because they, I didn't know, said something that they really regretted in that interview and they felt humiliated because of it.

A humiliated opponent, that's someone that you are against, so if your opponent was humiliated, maybe it was 'cause you beat them really badly.

A humiliated contestant, again this is similar to a candidate, it's someone who takes part in like a competition.

A humiliated team and humiliated pride, and that word pride again means your confidence or your self respect when you feel really pleased with what you've achieved, so if you've got humiliated pride, it's kind of similar to having a deflated pride, but it's less about being sad but more about being embarrassed.

I'd like you now to pause the video and have a go at reading all of these word pairs off you go.

Excellent, well done, lovely reading.

Now, let's see if you can remember, what does humiliated mean? Well done, it means feeling very embarrassed or ashamed.

Are you ready for our final word? WhoA! What is happening here? Can you look very closely at this picture to have a think about what you can see and how this character is feeling and how is this character feeling bad? Pause the video and have a think.

Okay, well, to me this character looks as if they are busting for the loo and they look like, their face, they look very stressed about it, okay? So, I wonder if this has got something, to do with being really stressed.

This word is desperate, I say, you say desperate, desperate.

Desperate is an adjective and it means anxious, frantic or despairing, how you feel when you can't wait to go to the loo, I know that probably everyone who's watching this has had that before, maybe there might be a really long queue to get to the loo and you're feeling desperate, but you might also feel desperate for lots of other things, like you might feel desperate to get a drink or desperate to have a new toy, that you've wanted for a really long time.

Let's have a look at some words that could be synonyms, need, attempt, situation, effort, despairing, battle, frantic, measure, fight and anxious.

Here's the word in a sentence, after lockdown, I was in desperate need of a haircut at that probably lots of you we're the same after not being able to have your haircut for so long.

So, can you spot any words that could be a synonym of the word desperate, pause the video and have a think.

Let's see if you were right, the synonyms are despairing, frantic, and anxious.

Anxious is a synonym for worry, feeling worried, that means the rest are word pairs and I'm going to read them to you.

A desperate need, for example, a desperate need of a haircut.

A desperate attempt, so when you try to do something desperately.

A desperate situation, so, perhaps if you were in a really important situation and you were running out of time, you might say, "oh, this is a desperate situation." A desperate effort, you might have to put in a desperate effort, if you were in a desperate situation.

A desperate battle, perhaps you were in a desperate battle to win some kind of argument.

A desperate measure and a desperate fight.

I'd like you now to read these words, cause remember it's only through reading them aloud that they stick in our memory, off you go.

Well done.

So, we've looked at these three words and we've learned three really ambitious words now , I wonder if you can remember which word matches which image? Pause the video and can you tell me? Well done, the first image shows deflated.

the second image is humiliated and the third image is desperate.

Even more of a challenge now, can you remember which definition matches which image? Because mine, I've got all muddled up, pause the video and see if you can work out which image matches, which definition? Let's see if you were right.

So, deflated means feeling hopeless or let down or empty.

Humiliated means very, very embarrassed.

Desperate means anxious or frantic or despairing.

We're going to now try to put these words in sentences and I've written sentences about the crayons in your story, because I know that you are going to be describing the crayons as one of your tasks.

The peach crayon felt mmh because her rapper had peeled off and she was naked.

Oh my goodness, how do you think the peach crayon was feeling? Pause the video and see if you can work it out.

The peach crayon felt humiliated, well done if you got that one right, so that's a type of feeling bad, feeling humiliated.

Here's another type of feeling bad, the beige crayon felt mmh because he was never chosen to colour anything fun.

Mmh, which word would fit in there do you think? Pause the video and see if you can work it out.

This one would be deflated because that's how you feel when you were a bit sad and I would feel sad if I was a crayon that never got used by my owner.

In the third example, we have the blue crayon, the blue crown was mmh meant to be sharpened because she was nothing more than a tiny stub! Which words do you think would fit in that? That's right, the blue crayon was desperate to be sharpened, I think I remember from the story that that blue crayon says, "everything blue is really big, like whales, "or like the sea or the sky," so that's probably why that pencil had got down to being really, really tiny, so, it needed to be, this needs to be sharpened.

Okay, I've written some sentences now, and now I'd like you to have a go at writing some sentences using these brilliant new words we have learnt.

The first sentence I'd like you to write is including the word deflated, you could use the word pairs to help you.

For example, you might pick the word pair deflated tyre, and you might write a sentence about that.

Remember your sentences need to start with a capital letter and end in a full stop and try to make your sentences as ambitious as possible, good luck and off you go with your first sentence.

Well done, let's have a go now writing a sentence, using the word humiliated, again, you can use the word pairs to help you.

For example, you might pick the word pair, humiliated politician, and you might write a sentence about a humiliated politician.

Remember to try to make your sentence really ambitious, sometimes I try to make my sentences ambitious by including a subordinating clause like as, as this thing happened, comma, this thing happened or when this thing happened, comma this thing happened, so, perhaps you could try and do that as well.

Pause the video and have a go at writing your sentence.

Brilliant, you're working so hard and I've just got one more task to ask of you.

It's our final word and it's the word desperate, I wonder if you could write one more sentence using the word desperate, again, use the word pairs to help you.

For example, you could write a sentence using the words desperate attempt, and then you could build your sentence around that word pair.

so, have one last go, at writing one last sentence, well done, you've worked so hard today and I hope you felt really proud of yourself that you've learned three really ambitious new words.

I also hope that you can manage to include these in your writing on your unit on the day the crayons quit, because I know that those crayons are feeling pretty bad and these words we've learned today would be a really good way to describe how they're feeling.

If you want to share any of your work, you can ask your parents or carer to share your work on Twitter, I'd love to see some of the sentences that you wrote.

Thank you so much for watching this lesson and I'll see you again soon, bye everyone.
