In 'Jekyll and Hyde: the Divided City', pupils explore how the city of London is used as a symbol of Jekyll's duplicitous life. In 'Jekyll & Hyde: Society as the Villain', pupils critically analyse the role the Victorian patriarchy and the class system plays in Jekyll's demise.

In this unit, pupils explore how the society the characters of 'Jekyll and Hyde' inhabit affects their interpretation of them. They first look at structure and the Gothic, before thinking carefully about how to use context. They then look at hypocrisy and write an essay about it in the novella.

At a boundary or transitional point between two contrasting elements.

A commonly used literary device is known as a trope. A gothic trope would be isolated settings.

Involving violation of moral or social boundaries.

A repeated idea in a story is known as a theme. Concealment is a theme in 'Jekyll and Hyde'.

Context concerns the circumstances in which a text was written; context helps us to understand the writer’s intentions further.

If an author sets out to deliver a social message or critique, this is known as the writer’s intention.

If a statement is applied to more things than to which it directly applies, then it is known as a generalisation.

Focalised refers to the perspective from which the story is told. In 'Jekyll & Hyde' the first 8 chapters are focalised through Utterson.

A third-person limited narrative structure is where a story is told from the perspective of one protagonist. We only see their thoughts.

Repression refers to the restraint, prevention or inhibition of a feeling or quality.

Justice concerns just behaviour or treatment.

If you are showing a strong feeling of support or allegiance then you are showing loyalty

The action of hiding something or preventing it being known is known as concealment.

Duality refers to the contrast between two opposite or opposing things.

Morality concerns the distinction between what is right and what is wrong.

If you criticise something in a thoughtful and detailed way this is known as a critique.

The differences between classes is known as the social divide. In 'Jekyll and Hyde' Utterson is a member of the midde class.

In literature, a foil is a secondary character whose purpose is to highlight or accentuate some aspect of the main character.

A pedant is someone who is excessively concerned with minor details.

If something is based on reason or logic then it is rational.

Complicity is when someone is involved in an activity with others that is unlawful or morally wrong.

If you are hiding something or preventing it being known, this is known as concealment.

Hypocrisy is when someone pretends to hold certain beliefs, while their actions and behaviour contradict or undermine these.

A secretive person keeps information private and hidden from others.

If you are discreet, you are careful to keep sensitive information confidential.

The word privacy refers to the state of being free from public attention.

When you make a distinction between two things, you show how they are different.
