This unit provides a foundation for 'Local to global: Identifying special places' and subsequent fieldwork investigations in 'Local area: how is our place special?' and a contrasting non-European locality in 'Contrasting locality: What is it like to live in (location) Jamaica/ Tanzania?'.

This unit builds on explorations of the local area in EYFS, and on 'Local area: Where do we live?' and 'Local area: Where do we go to school?'. It extends work on the school and immediate locality through investigating a specific land use - play areas. It develops basic geographical vocabulary and simple mapwork and fieldwork skills.

This unit develops pupils’ understanding of maps and route planning by exploring their school grounds. Pupils create maps, use symbols and keys, plan and follow routes, and apply their knowledge through simple fieldwork and observation.

Local area: how do we read maps and plan routes?

A map is a two-dimensional representation of an area, showing geographical features and where they are in relation to each other.

A visitor is someone who goes to a place for a while but does not stay there permanently.

A route shows the starting point and end point of a journey, sometimes with stops in between.

A play area is a space that contains equipment and features that children can use when playing.

Risk means the possibility that something bad or unpleasant, such as an injury, might happen.

Fieldwork is investigating the outdoors using geographical tools and thinking to gather information or data.

A journey stick is a way to remember a route by collecting items on the route and fixing them to a stick.

Play equipment are structures that children use for play such as swings, slides, climbing frames and sand boxes.

An opinion is a thought, feeling or belief held by a person or group of people.

A symbol is used to show an important landmark, place, feature or area of a map, diagram or drawing

A place is a location, an area or a building.

A model is a smaller representation of something that shows what it looks like or how it works.

An improvement is a change that makes something better.

To develop is to change something from how it has been, usually to make it better.
