In this unit, pupils explore different graphs and charts as a way of presenting data visually. Pupils are introduced to scatter graphs and learn how to construct them in this unit. In the future unit, this understanding is extended to using a line of best fit to allow interpolation

Graphical representations of data

The frequency is the number of times an event occurs; or the number of individuals (people, animals etc.) with some specific property.

A pictogram (pictograph) is a graph consisting of pictures to visually represent the frequency of objects or groups

A bar chart (bar graph) is a graph consisting of bars visually representing the frequency of objects or groups.

A sector is the region formed between two radii and their connecting arc.

Clockwise is the direction that the hands of an analogue clock travel

A pie chart (pie graph) is a circular graph where sectors represent different groups proportionally.

An angle is a measure of turn, it is often displayed as the rotation between two line segments.

Proportion is a part to whole (sometimes part to part) comparison. If two things are proportional, the ratio of part to whole is maintained

Degrees are the most common unit of measurement for angle. One whole turn is equal to 360 degrees, written 360°.

A dependent (response) variable is a measure whose value is predicted to be affected by an explanatory variable
