Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can retrieve information from a non-fiction text to answer questions.

Key learning points

  1. Familiarising yourself with a text's layout helps you to navigate and understand it.
  2. Skimming and scanning is a way to retrieve information accurately and quickly from a text.
  3. Searching for key words helps you to find information you are looking for.
  4. Bioluminescence and biofluorescence are two different ways in which creatures produce their glow.

Keywords

  • Information - facts learned about someone or something

  • Retrieve - to find information within the text

  • Bioluminescence - the production and emission of light by a living organism caused by a chemical reaction within it

  • Biofluorescence - the production and emission of light by a living organism as a result of absorbing ultraviolet light

Common misconception

Pupils may find the keywords from a question and copy out that exact sentence without checking.

Ensure children reread the question and check that their answer answers that question.

Teacher tip

Support the children to discuss and make links to other non-fiction texts they have read.
