Key learning points

  1. Familiarising yourself with a text's layout helps you to navigate and understand it.
  2. Skimming and scanning is a way to retrieve information accurately and quickly from a text.
  3. Searching for key words helps you to find information you are looking for.
  4. Bioluminescence and biofluorescence are two different ways in which creatures produce their glow.

Keywords

  • Information - facts learned about someone or something

  • Retrieve - to find information within the text

  • Bioluminescence - the production and emission of light by a living organism caused by a chemical reaction within it

  • Biofluorescence - the production and emission of light by a living organism as a result of absorbing ultraviolet light

Common misconception

Pupils may find the keywords from a question and copy out that exact sentence without checking.

Ensure children reread the question and check that their answer answers that question.
