Keywords

  • Poem - a piece of writing that uses creative and rhythmic language to express thoughts, feelings or ideas

  • Poet - the name for someone who writes poems

  • Impression - initial feelings about a person, place or thing, gained from reading a text

Common misconception

Pupils may think that all writers start writing and are successful from a young age.

Teach pupils that Coelho wrote poems for a long time before he became successful.

Teacher tip

You could read the poem to the children with no expression at all to show them how important expression is to help the audience connect with the poem. This should support pupils in Task B.

Equipment

You need a copy of the poem ‘The Story Builders’, which is in the 2017 Otter-Barry Books edition of ‘Overheard in a Tower Block’ by Joseph Coelho, for this lesson.
