Common misconception
Pupils may think that character traits remain fixed throughout the narrative.

Teacher tip
Pupils might see the characterisation of Nate’s mother in a negative light. It is important for conversations to be open, but also to support children’s understanding of some of the activities Mum engages in (smoking, Bingo) and why this might be, rather than making generalisations about her.
