Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can explore a character's emotional journey in a narrative.

Key learning points

  1. Character relationships refer to the connections and interactions between individuals within a narrative.
  2. We can see that Nate has both positive and negative relationships and that his relationships are not static.
  3. Different moments in the plot can evoke a range of emotions in a character.
  4. We can track a character’s emotions on an emotions graph.

Keywords

  • Relationship - the connections and interactions between individuals within a narrative

  • Emotions - strong feelings that result from a person's circumstances, mood or relationships with others

  • Emotions graph - a reading task where readers plot a character's feelings and emotions as they change throughout a narrative

Common misconception

Pupils may see the word 'relationships' as referring to romantic relationships.

Explore the different layers of relationships we all have. Encourage pupils to share the relationships they have, including any changes, if they feel comfortable to do so.
