Coming soon: Oak’s new Google Classroom add-on

Rachel Strom

Head of School Support

We speak with teachers regularly and you’ve often told us that the most useful digital tools are the ones that fit seamlessly into your everyday practice. For many schools, that practice already sits within Google Classroom.

Research shows that Google Classroom is widely used across UK schools. Teacher Tapp research indicates that around a third of teachers use Google Classroom as their learning management system. You can see this reflected in how Oak is already used: Oak lessons are often shared into Google Classroom for homework, revision and supporting pupils who need extra time.

Google Classroom also plays an important role in supporting independent learning, particularly in secondary schools. One of its key strengths is visibility. You can see what work has been set and whether it has been completed. Parents can do the same, helping you reinforce routines and support pupils who may be struggling.

Your feedback has been clear. You want Oak to work where you already work and you want it to make everyday tasks quicker and easier.

How the Oak Google Classroom add-on will help you

That insight has shaped what we’re building next: a new Oak Google Classroom add-on, designed to reduce friction and save you time.

With the add-on, you’ll be able to attach Oak lessons directly to Google Classroom assignments in just a few clicks, without switching between platforms. Your pupils will be able to access and complete Oak activities from within their familiar Google Classroom environment, making it easier for you to set structured, curriculum-sequenced learning for homework, revision, catch-up or independent study.

One of the biggest benefits is visibility. Through secure data connections, you’ll be able to see which Oak lessons have been completed and review quiz results at a glance. You’ll be able to quickly understand pupil progress and spot gaps in understanding without adding to your workload.

Privacy and data protection are built in. When you log in, the Oak add-on securely recognises you but never stores your pupils’ personal names or emails, keeping their data private. All pupil information remains within Google’s infrastructure, meaning Oak doesn’t store any personally identifiable pupil data. You get the insight you need, without any additional data burden.

As always, Oak’s content remains free to use, and an optional tool available to you. By using the Google Classroom add-on you’ll continue to have access to Oak’s full library of national curriculum-aligned, sequenced lessons, designed by experienced teachers and subject experts, to support the needs of you and your pupils.

What’s coming next and how you can get involved

The Oak Google Classroom add-on is currently in development. Fewer clicks, clearer insight into pupil learning, and a smoother way for you to use Oak alongside Google Classroom are on the way. But the good news is there’s not too long to wait. We’re planning for a full release later in the spring term.

Before then, attendees at Bett 2026 will be able to see the add-on in action on Friday 23 January. We’ll be at the Google booth from 12-2pm. You’ll see how it works in practice, and even be able to give it a go yourself. If you’re attending, come along and meet our team.

Not at Bett? You can still get involved. We’re looking for a small number of partner schools to take part in an early trial. If your school uses Google Classroom and you’re interested in shaping the add-on, testing it with pupils and sharing feedback, we’d love to hear from you.

This is one step towards making it easier for you to use Oak within the tools you already rely on, and we’re excited to share more with you soon.
