- ♪ Hello everyone ♪ Welcome to lesson three, exploring pulse and rhythm.

If you haven't done already, make sure you have done lesson one and lesson two, because we've already gone over pulse.

Put your listening ears on, get ready to sing.

Off we go.

In lesson three, we are going to find the pulse in a piece of music.

We're going to understand what rhythm is.

We're going to be matching words to the rhythm, and moving between pulse and rhythm.

In this lesson, you will need some paper and the worksheet, which is provided with this lesson, a pencil, and you guessed it your brain.

So let's recap.

What is pulse? I'm going to give you a few seconds to have a think.

In lesson one and two, we learnt that in a piece of music there is a steady beat called a pulse.

It is like a heartbeat that keeps beating throughout.

We can tap along to different pieces of music and find the pulse.

Activity one, to find the pulse in a piece of music.

Before we go with this lessons learning, let's have a recap.

I'm going to sing it through fast.

♪ Hey hey look at me ♪ ♪ I am waving can't you see ♪ Has that remind you? This time, see if you can join in.

♪ Off we go ♪ ♪ Hey hey look at me ♪ ♪ I am waving can't you see ♪ This time I'm going to leave out the word waving and you can put your own action in.

Have a think.

Have you got one? Okay, here we go.

♪ Off we go ♪ ♪ Hey hey look at me ♪ ♪ I am ♪ ♪ can't you see ♪ Did you manage to fit it in the gap? One more turn.

You can change the word or you can stick with the same one.

♪ Off we go ♪ ♪ Hey hey look at me ♪ ♪ I am ♪ ♪ can't you see ♪ Well done.

Okay, so in lesson one we practised keeping a steady pulse with different actions and you can see on the screen, there are two stamps and two claps.

So this is our pulse Okay, so we go, stamp, stamp, clap, clap.

One more time.

Stamp, stamp, clap, clap.

Ready, steady, off we go.

Fantastic.

Now we've got some new learning to do now.

Go into your next slide.

What do you think we're going to do in box number two? We're going to have a gap, a rest.

So on beat number one, we're going to do a stamp.

On beat number two, we're going to do nothing.

We're going to have a rest.

So I want you to put your hands out like this.

On beat number three, we're going to do another stamp and then on beat number four a clap, okay.

Watch me first.

One, two, three, four.

Activity two, matching words to the pulse.

Okay, so in lesson two we learnt the song, "Hey hey look at me." I want you to think about it and look at your screen.

We call that clapping the rhythm.

When we're fitting the sounds on the beats.

Let's recap.

What is a rhythm? Is it, the pattern of different sounds on a beat or a steady heartbeat? Have a think.

Did you get it right? It's the pattern of different sounds on the beat.

Activity three, matching the words to the rhythm.

Get your paper or worksheet ready for this activity.

Okay, we are going to learn another song now called "Copy Cat".

For this one we're going to be really thinking about the rhythm.

For this activity, you are going to match the words with the rhythm.

Remember to clap the rhythm of the word first.

How many claps did you do? For example, copy, is two claps.

So you are going to add two crosses into the heart.

For your challenge, can you perform the song whilst clapping the rhythm at the same time? Pause the video to complete your task, when you have finished resume the video.

Okay, so here are the answers to the rhythm writing for "Copy Cat".

Have a look at your worksheet, or if you did it on paper, that's also fine too.

And see if your crosses match the ones on my screen now.

Did you get them all right? Let's go through it.

♪ Copy ♪ Has two, doesn't it? It's one word, but there are two sounds.

♪ Cat ♪ Only one.

♪ Mat ♪ One.

Should we see if we can clap it through? Now we've got the notation on the screen.

Now I want you to put the words of the song into your thinking voice.

That means that we don't actually need to say anything.

We're only going to think the words.

Like this.

Okay, should we have a go.

Off we go.

Well done.

You just clapped the rhythm of "Copy Cat".

Let's recap.

What is the difference between a pulse and a rhythm? Have a think about what you would say about each word.

A rhythm is the pattern of different sounds on each beat.

For example, copy has two sounds, cat only has one.

The pulse is a steady heartbeat that carries on throughout a piece of music.

Activity four, moving between pulse and rhythm.
