In this unit pupils will learn to multiply a 3-digit by a 2-digit number They will use accurately short and long division and use a ratio chart to solve short and long division. In the future unit pupils will add, subtract, divide and multiply with integers, decimals, positive and negative values.

In the prior unit pupils will multiply a 3-digit number by a single-digit number using expanded and short multiplication. In this unit pupils will learn why the product stays the same when one factor is doubled and the other is halved and explain the effect on the product when scaling the factors by the same amount. 

In this unit pupils will extend their understanding of formal calculation strategies to multiply and divide by 2-digit numbers, explaining when other strategies are more efficient.

Multiplying and dividing by 2-digit numbers

The process of unitising and exchanging between place values is known as regrouping.

The associative law states that it doesn't matter how you group or pair values (i.e. which we calculate first), the result is still the same. It applies for addition and multiplication.

A composite number is an integer with more than two factors. All integers greater than 1 are either composite or prime.

Working efficiently means finding a way to solve a problem quickly whilst also maintaining accuracy.

The dividend is the amount that you want to divide.

A multiple is the result of multiplying a number by another whole number.

A quotient is the result after division has taken place.

Estimate means to find a value that is close enough to the right answer, usually with some thought or calculation involved.

Long division is a method used for dividing large numbers by breaking the number down into smaller groups.

A remainder is an amount left after a division.

Factors are numbers that multiply together to equal another number.

A prime number is a number with exactly 2 factors.

A fraction shows us how many parts in a whole. It is a number.

A decimal number has a decimal point followed by digits that show the fractional part.

Equivalent refers to when two or more things have the same value.
