An address is the name of a place with a postcode and other information such as street and town names to help you locate where it is.

Public transport is the shared use of vehicles such as trains, buses, trams and planes on routes where people pay fares.

A map key is a box of information on a map that tells you what the lines and symbols on the map mean.

This unit is a foundation for the more abstract contrasting locality units, enabling pupils to build on their understanding of the uniqueness of place through other cultural lenses and apply the learnt process of enquiry when finding out about places and people.

This builds on the Local to global unit which explored the local area and what made places special to enable pupils to be selective and communicate the most essential elements of their place in the form of a local area guide.

This unit explores what makes the local area special by identifying key features, landmarks and places of interest. Pupils use maps, address and direction language, local climate knowledge and fieldwork to describe and represent their locality.

Local area: why is (our place) special?

An island is a piece of land, smaller than a continent, that is surrounded by water.

Marshes are a type of wetland that form in low-lying areas near rivers and coasts.

A nature reserve is an area of land where the animals and plants living there are protected.

A holiday park is a place where people can go to camp, stay in a cabin  or stay in a caravan.

A village is a small group of houses where people live.

An area is a particular portion of the Earth's surface and it can be as small as a park or as large as an ocean.

Local means an area which the people who live there are familiar with, and encounter in their everyday lives.

Range means the distance and extent an individual may travel in their everyday lives.

A symbol is used to show an important landmark, place, feature or area of a map, diagram or drawing.

An average is found by adding two or more numbers together and then dividing the total by the number of numbers added together.

Climate is an average of weather conditions (e.g. rain, sun, wind) in a place taken over a long period of time (usually 30 years or more).

Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness of a place.

A meteorologist is someone who investigates and measures the atmospheric conditions that cause weather, and makes predictions.

The weather of a place is the day to day condition of the atmosphere, e.g. sunny, snowing, warm etc.

A human feature is something that humans have made or built.

A feature in the landscape which has a particular meaning attached to it, for example to help with directions, is called a landmark.

A statue is a model of somebody or something, usually an animal, made from hard materials such as wood, stone or metal.

The variety of human, physical or cultural characteristics in a geographical area is known as diversity.

A physical feature is natural and has not been built by humans

When we celebrate we acknowledge an important date, event or place.

A sense of place is the character of a place, or the meaning that people apply to it, including how we feel about a place.

A guide is a person, book or support that helps you find where places are and what they are like in the area you are exploring.

Investigating the outdoors using geographical tools and thinking, and gathering information or data is known as fieldwork.

A trail can be a rough marked path or a marked path with guidance about a route.
