This unit prepares the ground for learning about the Amazon biome in depth and thinking about the importance of forests globally, also for 'Energy: How do we power the world?' thinking how we use energy globally and understanding the role that trees play. 

This unit develops local area investigation 'Local area: What needs changing?' and builds on what has been learnt through a focus on trees and green spaces.

This unit explores the importance of trees and forests at local, national and global scales. Pupils investigate the benefits of trees, map forest change over time, and plan action in response to environmental change in their own local area.

Local and global: why are trees and forests important?

An area of land on which one kind of crop is grown, e.g. trees for wood

Conifers are a group of trees and shrubs, usually evergreen, that have fruit called cones, and needle or scale-shaped leaves

A boundary is a physical or imaginary line that marks the edge of a particular area

Timber is wood that has been cut down and prepared for use in industries

Natural resources are those that come from Earth without human influence and can be used for human needs

Agriculture is the science and practice of cultivating soil and farming

Infrastructure is all the basic systems in a country, such as transport and power supply

A biome is a large region of the world with places that have similar climates, vegetation and animals that have adapted to living there

Deciduous trees and shrubs lose all their leaves in autumn and winter and grow new leaves in spring

Climate zones are areas that have similar weather conditions and climate, e.g. the tropics

Evergreen trees and shrubs keep their leaves all year round

Vegetation belts are large areas in biomes that have similar plants

Indigenous describes people who are the original inhabitants of a place, rather than people who moved there from somewhere else

A hectare is a measurement of land. Each hectare is 10,000 square metres
