This unit provides a foundation for work in KS3.

This unit builds on all previous units, inviting pupils to consider the value of geography to them and the world.

This unit revisits key geographical themes through a global journey. Pupils explore news stories, regional features and environmental issues across all continents, using maps, data and fieldwork skills to reflect on what it means to think like a geographer.

A supply chain  is all of the stages involved in producing goods, transporting them and selling them to customers.

Migration means moving from one place to another with the intention of staying there.

A conflict is a strong disagreement between people or countries which may lead to fighting.

Climate change is a large-scale and long-term change in the planet’s climate, including weather patterns and average temperatures.

Land use is the function or purpose of a particular area.

Industry is the business of turning raw materials into finished products usually in factories.

Population density is the number of people living in a defined area, e.g. 300 people per square kilometre.

Diversity is the variety of human, physical or cultural characteristics in a geographical area.

Climate is an average of weather conditions (e.g. rain, sun, wind) in a place taken over a long period of time (usually 30 years or more).

A biome is a large region of the world with places that have similar climates, vegetation and animals that have adapted to living there.

Data is a collection of information that can be analysed to help us answer a question.

A physical feature is natural and has not been formed or made by humans.

A landscape is an area and its landforms and features that can be seen when viewed from another place.

A wilderness is a place or area that is in its natural state and where there are few people and no farming.

Natural resources are those that come from Earth without human influence and can be used for human needs.

To infer means to come to a conclusion using reasoning and evidence.

Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness of a place.

Climate zones are areas that have similar weather conditions and climate, e.g. the tropics.

The tourism industry is a term for the services provided for people who are on holiday, e.g. hotels, restaurants, tour guides, entertainment, transport, etc.

A tourist destination is a place that people go to on holiday.

An economic benefit is something that is good for a place in terms of money or jobs.

Amenities are useful things or services such as local shops and parks.

Minerals are chemical substances that are formed naturally and are found in the ground or in rocks.

Non-renewable means something that cannot be replaced and will eventually run out.

Renewable means that something can be re-used and will not be used up or run out.

The economy is the way money in a particular area is made and spent.
