In this unit pupils will explain how to calculate the area of a parallelogram and a triangle describing the relationship between scale factors and side lengths. They will describe positions in all four quadrants drawing and translating simple shapes and reflecting them in the axes In the future unit pupils extend their knowledge of plotting coordinates by now plotting non-integer values.

Area, perimeter, position and direction

The base is the side which is perpendicular to the shape’s height.

Area is a measurement of a flat surface. It measures a 2D space.

The distance around a 2D shape is its perimeter.

Perimeter is the distance around a two-dimensional shape.

A scale factor is the multiplier between similar shapes that describes how large one shape is compared to the other.

Two shapes are similar when one shape can become the other after a resize, flip, slide or turn.

Coordinates are a set of values that show an exact position.

Any of the four areas made when a plane is divided by an x and y axis is called a quadrant.

The x and y lines that cross at right angles to make a graph or grid are called axes, which is the plural of axis.

Translation is a type of transformation. Every point of a shape moves the same distance in the same direction.

A reflection is an image or shape as it would be seen in a mirror.

If two shapes are the same shape and size as each other, they are congruent.

A vertex is where two or more line segments meet. The plural is vertices.
