﻿- Hello my name is Mitiminy Kuchi and I'm introducing this art lesson. It's on identity, who I am. This particular lesson we are going to be focusing on the work of two artists. Chila Kumari Burman and Juan Pablo Echeverri. So Juan Pablo Echeverri is a Colombian artist and Chila Burman is an artist that works with mixed media. So for this lesson, you'll need some equipment. So you need to prepare a photograph. If you don't have one already, that can be a selfie, a self portrait, a fine liner pen and a piece of A4 paper. And you'll also need the Photopea app. So this Photopea app, it's a little bit like Photoshop. It's free, you don't need to download it. You just need to search your browser and then look at it from there. So I'll just give you a moment to get your resources and then please resume once you've finished. So now you have your resources. We're going to be having a look what we'll do this lesson. So hopefully you would have started with the intro quiz so you can get some fun facts about the artists. We'll then look at the artists briefly. We'll find out a little bit about them, how they work, the resources that they use and what their work is about. And then we'll have a look at how we can be influenced by these artists and how we can create work by their influence. And we'll have a look at the skills that we can learn from these artists, and then hopefully you will end with the exit quiz. So to start, I just wanted to go through some key words so that you're very familiar with the language that we use throughout the lesson. First we'll refer to identity quite a lot. And identity is kind of like the experiences, the characteristics, or the culture, or the personality of what makes us who we are. We'll then look at mixed media. So mixed media is when you create a piece of artwork using lots of different mediums. So it could be, for example, collage with paint, it could be a digital app, like what we're using today with Photopea and a photograph and a drawing. So it could be just a combination of lots of different materials together to create a piece of artwork. And then we'll look at the meaning of a self portrait. So there's lots of different ways in which you can take a self portrait. You can have, a self portrait can be a photograph. It can be a painting, or it can be a drawing. So we are going to in a way, combine two of those mediums in this lesson. So we'll start off by looking at Chila Kumari Burman. So Chila Kumari Burman is a mixed media artist. A lot of her work is about her identity. She uses lots of really bright colour in her work, she's really into colour. So she will take the most boldest, brightest colours and include those in her work which makes it really engaging. Her work is based on her own identity. So there's lots of factors about her culture, her identity, her upbringing, that she's brought into the work as well. And the work, as it's based on her, she's created lots of self portraits as well. So this particular self portrait has taken a very long time for her to create, it's actually taken 12 years. So that means that lots of things have changed whilst she's been doing this work. What do you think could have changed about her identity when she's created this work? So it's taken 12 years. So it could be that her identity has changed, her physical identity. The way that she looks has changed, her interests, her hobbies, everything about the artist could have changed over a period of time, but she kept adding to this work. So it makes it quite interesting and exciting. We then go into look at Juan Pablo Echeverri's work. So he's a Colombian artist and he works with the medium of photography. So his work is also, it could be a self portrait, could be considered to be a self portrait because the work is about himself. And he's created a series of photographs. As you can see on the image here, all of these photographs relate to the artists, the photographs that he's taken from a photo booth, what differences do you notice in the way that the portraits look, what differences are there with each portrait? You can see that, a lot of them, his hair has changed. Sometimes his hair is long, sometimes his hair is short. He might be wearing scarves, he might be wearing jumpers. He might be wearing work that relates to the, sorry clothing that relates to the summer or clothing that you wear in the winter. But his identity has changed quite a lot over the period of time. So you can see both of the artists, their work is in a way it's similar because they're both working with a self portrait. They're both working with images of themselves, but also the changes are about the work has changed over a period of time hasn't it? So what materials do the artists use? So Juan Pablo Echeverri, he's used a photo booth. So that's something outside of his home or his studio. He uses himself his face, his torso because he's taken photographs of himself, lots of different clothing and lots of different hairstyles. So these are the things that he has to create his work. Chila Kumari Burman on the other hand has also used lots of things within her portraits. She's used paint, lots of brightly coloured paints. She's used sequence, she's used lots of fabric, wrapping paper, glue, lots of different things, what we call found objects. So these are things that you might have had in the home and then decided to incorporate them within her portrait to make it different, to make it exciting, to make it unusual, and also to reflect her identity because she's really into colour, into sequence and to using lots of different materials. So what we're going to do now, we are going to prepare a self portrait. If you don't have one already, you can just take one using just a mobile phone. You might ask somebody else to take the portrait for you. So all you'll need is something similar to what you can see on me, the head and the shoulders, just the head and the upper part of the torso, or you might want to include just your face, try and take this photograph with a plain background so that there's no distraction, as plain as you can get. So just complete the task and then resume the video once you've completed that. So the first task that we're going to do, the second task rather is what we call a continuous line drawing. So we're going to use your A4 piece of paper and fineliner pen, a black fineliner pen, or a black vireo and a continuous line drawing is when you are continually drawing the portrait just using line, don't have to do any tone or shading, and you are going to continually draw the image over the piece of paper without taking your hand off, without taking the pen off the piece of paper. Now you can see my portrait is quite unusual. It doesn't look exactly like me, but it's more or less who I am. And it's just a bit of fun. So don't worry too much if it goes all over the place, just enjoy the process, just watch this demonstration, to see how I've created mine. And then resume once you've finished. So this is the demonstration for the continuous line drawing. I have a piece of A4 paper here and I'm just going to start in the centre. So the purpose of a continuous line drawing is that you are drawing a self portrait without taking the pen off the paper. So I'm just going to follow all of the lines that I see. And I'm gonna try hard not to take my pen off the paper and I'm going to start just drawing everything. So there's no shading because it is just a line drawing. And I'm just going to go over all of the lines that I see. So I'm going to get the basic shapes. I'm going to cut in and draw the rest of the face here, the cheeks, you might make some mistakes. Don't worry about it because this is just the fun part of the drawing. So I'm just going to draw all the lines I see. And then I'm going to go back into the face and I'm going to draw the eyes. At this stage, it won't look anything like you, but don't worry just keep going because it's just a bit of fun. So I'm just going to continue to draw everything, go back, get the eyebrows in, the one eye. They might not match up. They might not be the same size, but it's fine because it's just a bit fun. And I draw the top of the glasses. The other side. Now, remember you are just continuously moving the pen around to get all of the lines and to draw everything that you see. As I said, it won't look like you at this stage. It's just, you just keeping the pen moving around, trying to get as much detail as you can without moving it. If you do take off the pen, the pen is removed. Just continue as much as you can for the next stage. I'm just going to draw everything that I see, almost done. And so kind of little line over here. Some more lines there, and I'm doing all of this without taking the pen off the page once. And I make more lines here, try and add a little bit of detail here. That's it. This is a little bit wider here. And there's another line and I'm going to add a little bit of detail in the glasses, draw the rim. And then when I go back in and drawing the pupils at a little bit of dark light saying that this one, and that's it. That is a continuous line drawing.

- After you've done your continuous line drawing, we're going to look at how we create an artwork inspired by these different artists. As we've said, both of these artists use mixed media. So one of the artists, Juan Pablo Echeverri used a photo booth, lots of different kinds of clothing to show how his identity changes over time. And when you are creating this work, don't worry about making mistakes or the work might not look like you. It will change over a period of time. We won't quite be taking 12 years to create this, but we will be taking our time to create this. So don't worry if you make any mistakes or it doesn't look like you. And this is about developing your skills, using different resources. And then combining both of the resources together, it's a fun task. It's itself portrait, but done in a fun interesting and hopefully exciting way. So the first thing you need to do, we are going to look at creating a double exposure type of effect. So that's when you have two images together and one of them is on top of the other. So we going to kind of blend the images and merge them together to create one piece of work. So we're going to be using our continuous line drawing. We'll also use the photograph, your self portrait, and we're going to merge them together using Photopea. This is the Photopea demonstration. You don't need to download anything. You can use it directly from your browser. So then all you need to do is press new project. You can give your new project a title. I'm just going to call this one portrait. You can leave all the regiments, the width and the height and the background you can leave white. If you want, you can press, there are several templates here so that you can choose the shape and size of your canvas. I'm just going to go ahead and use the standard one. So then I just press create, and then you'll get this screen here. So this is your canvas. So then all you need to do is go to file, open and place that will open the image and then place it onto the canvas. So I'm going to start with the photographic image. It really doesn't matter which order if you want to choose the continuous line first, that's fine. So then I'm going to place this image in the centre, just going to drag it across. You can tell when it's in the centre of the canvas, because you'll get a red line from top to bottom and then horizontal one from left to right so you get the vertical and the horizontal line just to show that it's in the centre of the canvas. And then you can go to file, open place again, will take me to either the desktop or photos, wherever you've saved your images. And then I'm just going to open the continuous line drawing, and then I'm going to place the image right on top of the photographic one. I'm going to make this one a little bit smaller because as you can see, I want them more or less the same size. It's still a little bit bigger. So I'm just going to again put the mouse on the browser. And then I'm just going to make that a little bit smaller. Okay. So you can see on the right-hand side here, you've got something called layers and you'll see here, there's the background, which is plain white, the photographic image, and then the continuous line drawing. Don't worry about these squares that are in the middle because they will go. And then all I'm going to do is just to play around with the opacity. And I'm going to just slide it across. And as you'll see, as I slide it across, you begin to see a combination of both of the images. So you can just play around to decide how you want it. It's quite a fun app. So I think I'm going to leave it about there. And then all I'm going to do either you can merge the layers down just by going to image, sorry, layer, merge down that just merges both of the images together. And then I'm going to press file, export as a JPEG. So JPEG is like a photographic image. It's kind of like the best quality. So then I will just press JPEG. You can see here it's a portrait, it's the width and the height work the same as the project, but I'm going to change the quality to 100% to get the best quality. And then I'm going to save the image and then the image is saved here. So then when it's ready, I'll open the image and there you can see the images, both of them merged together. So what I'm going to do is one final thing. I'm going to press command shift four or control shift four, and then I'm going to crop the image so that I only have, I don't want anything else in the background, just the two images merged together like that, just to close that. And then the image should be saved directly to your desktop. So if I go to the desktop, I can see my screenshot. Then that is the final image. We can do a little review. As I said, it won't look anything. It will look like you, it will be a self portrait, but it will be an unusual one, an interesting one. And then you have the opportunity to experiment with the different resources. So after you've completed your task, let's do a little review. So I'm going to review mine. What do I think went well? So I think I liked the way that the drawing allowed me to be kind of fun and fluid and I can just kind of experiment with that. And then the image, the photographic image was kind of like quite static. So I liked the kind of contrast between the still photographic image and the drawing, which is fun and fluid so it created kind of like some movements. So it looks like it's kind of moving there and it's a fun image. Even better, I think that with the photo here, I could have experimented a little bit more with filters, so I could have added a little bit more colour. I could have added a strange kind of filter to make it even more interesting and exciting and different, but overall I'm quite happy with the experiment. And I had fun with it.
