Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Artists like Julien Zingozen use sails to talk about identity and history.
  2. Art can use abstract symbols to help us share stories without needing to explain them.
  3. Continuous line drawing can help us see shapes and symbols in new ways.
  4. Collage can be used to create abstract patterns and show ideas.

Keywords

  • Pattern - when shapes, colours or lines repeat again and again

  • Abstract - using shapes, colours and lines in artwork to represent feelings or ideas

  • Symbol - a picture or shape that stands for something else

Common misconception

All abstract symbols need to be explained to others.

Remind pupils that some abstract symbols hold personal or cultural meanings that don’t have to be explained. The West African Adinkra symbol Sankofa, literally means “go back and fetch it” and suggests that we carry our past with us.
