Lesson details
Key learning points
- Sketching the main shapes first and simplifying details makes the design clearer for printing.
- Adding key details like patterns and textures helps to make the insect design more interesting and ready for print.

Sketch/sketching - making quick and simple drawings to show ideas or the things we see
Texture - the feel or appearance of a surface
Common misconception
Pupils may think that adding more detail will always make a print better.
While detail can be important in some art, too many tiny or delicate details can get lost or not transfer properly when printing. It’s actually more effective to use bold, simple shapes and lines to create a clear and striking print.

The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom.
