      The elements of art: pattern

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use block printing to create a repeated pattern design.

      Key learning points

      1. Patterns often involve designs made using printing techniques.
      2. Printed patterns are often seen in everyday items like clothing, furnishings and wallpapers.
      3. Block printing is a process where a design is transferred from a material onto a surface using pressure.
      4. Patterns often use geometric shapes and are built through repeat and print techniques.

      Keywords

      • Pattern - a design in which lines, shapes, forms or colours are repeated

      • Print - making a copy of a design by pressing it onto a surface like fabric or paper

      • Geometric - characterised by regular lines and shapes like squares, triangles, or circles

      • Repeat - when a shape or design is copied again and again to make a pattern

      Common misconception

A repeated pattern is just the same shape copied over and over again.

While repeating the same shape is one way to create a pattern, artists and designers use a variety of methods to make repeated patterns more dynamic, engaging and sophisticated.

      Teacher tip

You could break the lesson into two parts: Lesson 1 – Create backgrounds and build polytile stamps. Lesson 2 – Print onto backgrounds. Demonstrate how to ink up tiles clearly, keep working areas tidy and encourage creating repeat patterns in different ways. Pre-cut tiles and paper to save time.

      Equipment

Polytile squares, white and black paper, scissors, glue, pencils, printing ink, rollers, palettes, prepped backgrounds and drying space.
