Creating and presenting an artist research page

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can research artists and present my findings and analysis.

      Key learning points

      1. Analysing key themes and techniques used by an artist deepens our understanding of their art.
      2. By studying the work of other artists, artists enrich their art and develop their own artistic voice.
      3. Inspirational art can be found in many places offering diverse opportunities for research and discovery.
      4. Artist research can be recorded visually and with annotations.

      Keywords

      • Analysis - the process of examining the elements or structure of something

      • Annotation - adding notes to explain, analyse, or share your thoughts about a piece of artwork

      • Context - the circumstances or setting surrounding an event or idea, especially in art

      Common misconception

Artist research is about making your work like another artist's artwork.

Recording and analysing an artist’s work is essential for developing your understanding of techniques, concepts, and creative processes. We don't need to copy an artist's work but can take and apply knowledge and ideas inspired by relevant artists.

      Teacher tip

Where possible, it is a good idea to use past sketchbooks and the pupils' own sketchbooks for discussion and feeback.
