Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can explore unusual materials and create a simple woven tapestry.

Key learning points

  1. Weaving can be expressive and exciting when interesting materials are used to weave with.
  2. Tapestry weaving techniques are not difficult and using a fringe effect is a easy technique to create texture.
  3. Using fibre to build tone and texture, different thicknesses and types of weaves.

Keywords

  • Tapestry - a textile art where weft threads are woven to create patterns or textures.

  • Weave - the process of interlacing threads or strips of material over and under each other to create fabric.

  • Loom - a frame or machine used to weave fabric by holding threads tight while others are woven through.

Common misconception

Plastic bags cannot be used in weaving because they are too soft.

Nearly all materials can be used to weave with as long as they are cut correctly so that they can fit into the loom.

Teacher tip

Materials should be cut into neat long strips before weaving. It is good to prpare all of the materials before the weaving starts.

Equipment

Loom, wool, plastic bags, plastic weaving needle.
