Lesson details
Key learning points
- Designers think about their 3D designs form and function so that it could protect, contain, or display.
- Design elements such as structure, surface, and material can define, obscure, or connect interior and exterior space.
- 3D design can express emotion, or narrative by contrasting the outside appearance with what’s hidden or revealed inside.
Keywords
Space - the area around, between, and within objects. It can be physical, like a room, or it can be visual
Structure - the way parts of a design are arranged or put together to form a whole, often affecting strength, stability, and overall shape
Containment - the act or quality of enclosing or holding something within, in 3D design this might relate to packaging, vessels, or spaces that hold people or objects
Common misconception
3D design is just about making things look good, it doesn't need to express deeper ideas.
While aesthetics are important, 3D design is also a powerful way to communicate ideas and solve problems. It can explore complex themes through physical form, material choice, and spatial design. Good design combines purpose with meaning.
