      Objects in 3D Design

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can review the range of ways artists have been inspired by objects in 3D design.

      Key learning points

      1. 3D design enables the creation of functional objects that consider both utility and user interaction.
      2. Aesthetic choices in 3D design, like material, can contribute to how objects are perceived emotionally and culturally.
      3. Prototypes and sketched mockups help designers evaluate how a design performs in real space.

      Keywords

      • Ergonomics - the study of how objects can be designed for optimal comfort, efficiency and safety in human use

      • Prototype - a preliminary model of a product used to test and refine design ideas before final production

      Common misconception

3D design is only about how things look.

While appearance (aesthetics) is important, 3D design also prioritises function, usability and interaction with real space. Especially in product and furniture design, how an object works is just as critical as how it looks.

      Teacher tip
