Lesson details
Key learning points
- 3D design enables the creation of functional objects that consider both utility and user interaction.
- Aesthetic choices in 3D design, like material, can contribute to how objects are perceived emotionally and culturally.
- Prototypes and sketched mockups help designers evaluate how a design performs in real space.
Keywords
Ergonomics - the study of how objects can be designed for optimal comfort, efficiency and safety in human use
Prototype - a preliminary model of a product used to test and refine design ideas before final production
Common misconception
3D design is only about how things look.
While appearance (aesthetics) is important, 3D design also prioritises function, usability and interaction with real space. Especially in product and furniture design, how an object works is just as critical as how it looks.

Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom. Plus, you can set it as homework or revision for pupils and keep their learning on track by sharing an online pupil version of this lesson.
