Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Everyone has the right to feel safe from harm or threat and enjoy a sense of belonging in their communities.
  2. Communities are connected by shared goals and values which also form parts of a person's identity.
  3. A mix of education and legistlation are important aspects of ensuring respect and understanding in society.

Keywords

  • Belonging - the feeling of security and support when there is a sense of acceptance, inclusion and identity for a member of a certain group

  • Community - a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common

  • Identity - who a person is, or the qualities of a person or group that make them different from others

Common misconception

For communities to work together successfully everyone has to always agree.

Individuals can recognise and co-exist with beliefs, opinions and values that are different to their own. This allows people to peacefully live with others who we might disagree with, as long as they do not harm anyone through their choices.
