      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can edit the paths of vector shapes to create unique shapes.

      Key learning points

      1. A path is a line that goes from one point to another; it can be straight or curved.
      2. Nodes mark the start, end, or a change in direction of a path.
      3. You can convert a basic shape into a path so you can edit it more closely.
      4. Editing paths gives you more control and flexibility than using basic shapes alone.

      Keywords

      • Path - a line that goes from one point to another and can be straight or curved

      • Nodes - points that mark the start, end, or a change in direction of a path

      • Freehand - drawn freely without the use of any tools

      Common misconception

Changing a shape's path doesn’t change how it behaves — it’s still just a shape.

Editing a path changes the shape’s structure. Moving nodes changes the outline, allowing for new and more complex designs.

      Teacher tip

When introducing nodes and path editing, encourage pupils to zoom in closely and edit one node at a time. This helps them see the effect of each change more clearly and reduces the chance of accidental distortion to the overall shape.

      Equipment

Pupils will need access to a device with vector graphic editing software. Examples in this lesson use Inkscape https://oak.link/inkscape

      6 Questions

      Q1.
In vector graphics, what is each shape such as a square or circle called?

      Correct Answer: object, an object

      Q2.
What does grouping objects allow you to do?

change the colour of just one object
      erase all objects
      lock the screen
Correct answer: move or change several objects at once

      Q3.
Which tool helps you line up objects neatly in a row or column?

      Correct answer: alignment tool
      eraser tool
      paintbrush tool
      crop tool

      Q4.
What does the distribute tool do?

      changes object colours
      rotates objects
Correct answer: spreads objects out evenly
      locks objects in place

      Q5.
What function joins two or more objects into one entity?

      Correct Answer: combine

      Q6.
Arrange these steps for combining objects:

      1 - select the objects
2 - choose the combine function
3 - the objects become one entity
4 - edit the new shape if needed

      6 Questions

      Q1.
What is a path in vector graphics?

      a block of text
      a photo background
      a sound effect
Correct answer: a line that goes from one point to another, straight or curved

      Q2.
What do you call the points that mark the start, end, or bends in a path?

      Correct Answer: nodes

      Q3.
Why would you want to edit a shape by changing its path?

      to make the shape invisible
      to add sound
Correct answer: to create more precise and unique designs
      to change the file name

      Q4.
Arrange these steps for creating a curved path:

1 - select the path tool
2 - click to create a starting node
3 - click to create more nodes
4 - drag to create curves

      Q5.
Match each keyword to its meaning:

Correct Answer:path,a line that goes from one point to another

a line that goes from one point to another

Correct Answer:node, points marking the start, end, or bends

points marking the start, end, or bends

Correct Answer:freehand, drawn without using any tools

      drawn without using any tools

Correct Answer:shape,a basic object like a square or circle

a basic object like a square or circle

      Q6.
What is the main benefit of editing a path instead of only using a basic shape?

Correct answer: greater control and flexibility
the shape turns into a photo
      the shape changes colour automatically
      the shape becomes smaller
