Creating digital graphics
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can describe the differences between image types and use software to create a digital graphic.
Key learning points
- The two main types of digital graphics are called raster and vector.
- Raster and bitmap are interchangeable terms used for the same type of image.
- Lossy means quality is lost if the image is resized.
- Lossless means no quality is lost when resized.
Keywords
Raster - also known as bitmap, raster graphics are composed of pixels containing colour information
Vector graphic - an image made up of lines and shapes
Lossy compression - a method where data is permanently lost during the compression process and must be approximated when the file is decompressed
Lossless compression - a method of compression where no data is permanently lost during the process
Common misconception
Bitmap and raster are two different types of image.
They are the same and can be referred to as a raster or bitmap image.
Teacher tip
Looking at some templates and physical menus can aid the creation stage of this lesson. Also having preset food options to include can support learners.
Equipment
Pupils will need access to a device that has software that can combine digital images and graphics. Examples in this lesson use Canva https://oak.link/canva

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom. Plus, you can set it as homework or revision for pupils and keep their learning on track by sharing an online pupil version of this lesson.
