Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. The two main types of digital graphics are called raster and vector.
  2. Raster and bitmap are interchangeable terms used for the same type of image.
  3. Lossy means quality is lost if the image is resized.
  4. Lossless means no quality is lost when resized.

Keywords

  • Raster - also known as bitmap, raster graphics are composed of pixels containing colour information

  • Vector - vector graphics are composed of mathematical paths and colour information

  • Lossy compression - reduces file size by removing some data but reduces quality when resized

  • Lossless compression - reduces file size and retains all the data so that it can be resized with the same quality

Common misconception

Bitmap and raster are two different types of image.

They are the same and can be referred to as a raster or bitmap image.
