      Creating digital video

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain the different features to consider when planning a video and use software to create a digital video artefact.

      Key learning points

      1. There are lots of camera angles to consider when creating a digital video.
      2. Different camera angles have a different effect on how the audience interprets the scene.
      3. The frame rate (fps) is the number of frames shown per second.
      4. When a file is saved in a video file format it is stored in a container.
      5. A codec is the software or method used to compress and decompress the video and audio data.

      Keywords

      • Frame rate - the number of individual frames that are shown per second

      • Container - video file formats containing video, audio, playback data and encoding information

      • Codec - the instructions used to compress and decompress the video or audio data

      Common misconception

It does not matter how the camera is positioned as long as the action is captured.

The camera angle can help portray a key element of the moment to the viewer and help them understand the meaning of the clip.

      Teacher tip

Changing the theme and recording your own video can add to this lesson depending on time available.

      Equipment

Pupils will need access to a device that has software that can create a short video clip. Examples in this lesson use Canva https://oak.link/canva

      graphics made from mathematical paths

Correct Answer:lossy compression, reduces file size by removing some data and quality

reduces file size by removing some data and quality

Correct Answer:lossless compression, reduces file size, but keeps all data and quality

reduces file size, but keeps all data and quality

      Q5.
What type of image is best for resizing without losing quality?

      6 Questions

      Q1.
What is a "close-up" shot used for in video?

to show a subject from far away
      to show a wide landscape
      to film action scenes
Correct answer: to capture detail or emotion by showing a person or object at close range

      Q2.
What does a "high-angle" shot do?

Correct answer: points the camera to make the subject look smaller or less powerful
shows the subject from below making them appear larger and more powerful
      moves the camera quickly
      captures only the background

      Q3.
What is the name for the instructions used to compress and decompress video or audio data?

      Correct Answer: codec

      Q4.
Match each camera angle to its effect:

      Correct Answer:close-up,shows emotion or detail

      shows emotion or detail

Correct Answer:long shot, shows the setting or background

      shows the setting or background

Correct Answer:high-angle shot, makes subject appear smaller or less powerful

makes subject appear smaller or less powerful

Correct Answer:low-angle shot, makes subject look powerful or important

makes subject look powerful or important

      Q5.
Which statement about camera angles is incorrect?

camera angle can help show meaning
Correct answer: camera angle does not matter as long as the action is captured
high-angle shots can make subjects look smaller
low-angle shots can make subjects look powerful

      Q6.
Put these steps in order for creating a short video clip:

1 - plan your shots and angles
      2 - record the video
      3 - edit using software
4 - export the finished video file
