Accessibility
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can recognise how technology supports individuals' access to the modern working world and how accessibility issues affect people at work.
Key learning points
- Assistive technologies help individuals with disabilities engage fully in digital environments.
- Accessibility features in platforms for online communication support diverse user needs.
- Popular tools for communication include email, instant messaging, video conferencing and discussion forums.
Keywords
Accessibility - consideration of design so that what is created is usable by everyone
Collaboration - two or more people working together
Common misconception
Working collaboratively is always positive and has an impact on productivity.
There are some disadvantages to collaborative working, for example complex decision making with multiple people can become a lengthy process and coordination of resources can be difficult.
Teacher tip
Visualising examples of accessible hardware is really helpful in understanding the barriers people can have when using non-accessible technology. Try to find equipment or images that pupils can look at to understand the adaptations that have to be made.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom. Plus, you can set it as homework or revision for pupils and keep their learning on track by sharing an online pupil version of this lesson.
