Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. A pizza base is bread dough, which uses yeast. As the dough rests and bakes, yeast produces gas, which makes it rise.
  2. Precise cutting, spreading and rolling are important to make eight uniform sized pizza rolls which will cook evenly.
  3. The food skills needed to make a pizza include measuring, kneading, grating, spreading, rolling and using an oven.
  4. Pizzas can have a wide range of toppings, catering for many food preferences, health needs and occasions.

Keywords

  • Kneading - the process of pulling, folding and stretching the dough

  • Carbon dioxide - a colourless, odourless gas

  • Prove - in this context, allowing the dough to rest and the yeast to produce gas (carbon dioxide)

  • Yeast - a microorganism that produces a gas (carbon dioxide) during making and baking a dough

Common misconception

The base of a pizza is always covered in a sauce made from tomatoes.

While a sauce made from tomatoes is traditional, the base can also be covered in pesto, a cheese sauce, or just garlic and oil.
