Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Exploded diagrams show how the separate parts fit together to be assembled.
  2. Each individual piece of a design needs to be drawn separately in an exploded diagram.
  3. Tinkercad has a notes tool that allows designers to make annotations.
  4. Tinkercad orthographic view shows designs to scale from the front, back, top, bottom and side views.
  5. Tinkercad orthographic view shows designs in isometric with shape sides drawn at 30 degree angles from the horizontal.

Keywords

  • Exploded digram - a drawing showing how separate components fit together

  • Perspective view - viewing 3D objects in 2D, where objects look smaller as they get further away

  • Orthographic view - viewing 3D objects in 2D to scale, showing each side of a design without perspective

  • Isometric - drawing 3D objects to scale, with shape sides drawn at 30 degree angles from the horizontal

  • Annotate - add notes or labels to something to help explain it

Common misconception

Exploded diagrams have to be in perspective view.

Orthographic view is a better viewpoint for seeing the exploded parts of the eco-house.

Pupils may wish to use previously saved work but if they are really complex designs then the pupils may wish to start a new design.
