      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use Tinkercad to draw exploded diagrams.

      Key learning points

      1. Exploded diagrams show how the separate parts fit together to be assembled.
      2. Each individual piece of a design needs to be drawn separately in an exploded diagram.
      3. Tinkercad has a notes tool that allows designers to make annotations.
      4. Tinkercad orthographic view shows designs to scale from the front, back, top, bottom and side views.
      5. Tinkercad orthographic view shows designs in isometric with shape sides drawn at 30 degree angles from the horizontal.

      Keywords

      • Exploded digram - a drawing showing how separate components fit together

      • Perspective view - viewing 3D objects in 2D, where objects look smaller as they get further away

      • Orthographic view - viewing 3D objects in 2D to scale, showing each side of a design without perspective

      • Isometric - drawing 3D objects to scale, with shape sides drawn at 30 degree angles from the horizontal

      • Annotate - add notes or labels to something to help explain it

      Common misconception

Exploded diagrams have to be in perspective view.

Orthographic view is a better viewpoint for seeing the exploded parts of the eco-house.

      Teacher tip

Pupils may wish to use previously saved work but if they are really complex designs then the pupils may wish to start a new design.

      Equipment

Access to Tinkercad on tablet, chromebook or laptop.

      a cube with edges
Correct answer: a 3D shape with circular ends
      a triangle with height

      Q3.
Match the 3D shape to its description:

Correct Answer:cube, has six equal square faces

      has six equal square faces

      Correct Answer:cylinder,has two circular ends

      has two circular ends

Correct Answer:cone, has one curved side and a point

has one curved side and a point

      Q4.
Match the drawing tool to what it does:

      Correct Answer:ruler,makes straight lines

      makes straight lines

Correct Answer:pencil, used to sketch or outline

      used to sketch or outline

      Correct Answer:eraser,removes lines and mistakes

      removes lines and mistakes

      Q5.
      What is a final design?

      lots of messy idea sketches
a written list of materials that are used
      a photo of your model
Correct answer: a finished drawing ready to share

      Q6.
Put the steps for creating a final design in the correct order:

1 - draw as accurately as possible
2 - label the parts clearly
3 - add colour if needed

      6 Questions

      Q1.
      What is an exploded diagram?

a messy sketch of a building
      a flat version of a 3D model
Correct answer: a diagram that shows parts separated
      a design that uses fireworks

      Q2.
From the horizontal, what angle are shape sides drawn at in isometric diagrams?

      Correct answer: 30 degrees
      40 degrees
      50 degrees
      60 degrees

      Q3.
Why is it helpful to label an exploded diagram?

so people know you did it
      to make it colourful
Correct answer: to explain what each part is
to write your name in big letters

      Q4.
Put these in order for presenting your design to the class:

1 - explain what it is
      2 - show the diagram
3 - describe how it works

      Q5.
Match the diagram type to its purpose:

Correct Answer:final design, shows the finished product

      shows the finished product

Correct Answer:exploded diagram, shows how parts fit together

      shows how parts fit together

Correct Answer:rough sketch, first idea, quick and simple

      first idea, quick and simple

      Q6.
Put these steps in the correct order for drawing an exploded diagram in Tinkercad:

1 - draw each shape carefully
2 - separate each part slightly
3 - add labels to each part
