Develop ideas through annotated sketches
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can develop a meaningful and authentic design brief.
Key learning points
- Design specification outlines the key problems to solve.
- Sketching allows designers to generate lots of ideas.
- Choosing and finalising a design to use may mean combining ideas.
Keywords
Design specification - a list of things a product must have or do
Annotate - write notes on a design to add information
Evaluate - to judge how well a product meets design criteria
Common misconception
Design drawings must be technical and include detail.
Simple drawings can be annotated to add the extra information and detail needed to understand the design.
Teacher tip
Have resources, such as boxes, bottles, syringes, tubes and balloons, available for pupils to look at and handle. This will aid their drawing and help them see how components can be attached. Be aware of pupils with latex allergies if using latex balloons.
Equipment
Paper, pencils, rulers, small cardboard boxes (egg boxes, teabag boxes, tissue boxes, etc), plastic syringes (10 ml and 20 ml), plstic tubing (4 or 5 mm) and balloons.
Content guidance
Risk assessment required - may contain allergens

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom. Plus, you can set it as homework or revision for pupils and keep their learning on track by sharing an online pupil version of this lesson.
