Investigating contexts

I can identify a broad range of design opportunities when investigating a context.

These resources will be removed by end of Summer Term 2025.

Switch to our new teaching resources now - designed by teachers and leading subject experts, and tested in classrooms.

These resources were created for remote use during the pandemic and are not designed for classroom teaching.

Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. A context is the situation within which something exists or happens.
  2. Context investigations can identify a range of design opportunities or problems to solve.
  3. Contexts can be explored using a variety of methods.

Keywords

  • Context - the situation within which something exists or happens

  • Design opportunity - a gap, or a need where a new or improved product would be beneficial

  • Iterative - refining and improving

  • Design fixation - consider only one possible solution

Common misconception

Students often 'think' they understand a context without having fully explored it.

Students need to be encouraged to fully explore a context so to understand it fully before moving onto designing. This is great practice for the NEA.

To help you plan your year 10 design and technology lesson on: Investigating contexts, download all teaching resources for free and adapt to suit your pupils' needs...

Perhaps you may have photos/videos from your own travelling experiences/expeditions that you could bring to the lesson. Many schools fundraise to visit developing countries. It would be good to relate to your own school's experiences.
