      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can name and understand some features of instructions.

      Key learning points

      1. Instructions tell us how something should be done.
      2. Instructions are written as commands using verbs to tell us how something should be done.
      3. Instructions are often in a set order or sequence.
      4. Instructions often have sequencing language and are numbered to help to follow the order.
      5. Instructions may include pictures or diagrams to help to show what they do.

      Keywords

      • Instruction - tells us how something should be done

      • Command - a type of simple sentence that tells someone to do something

      • Verb - a doing or being word

      • Sequence - following the order in which a series of events happens

      Common misconception

Pupils may struggle to examine the features if they are uncertain of word class.

The primary focus is for pupils to understand that sequencing language and verbs help to explain how to do something clearly in the correct order - focus on this more with pupils who find word class difficult.

      Teacher tip

Share real-life examples of instructions that are relevant to your pupils and that they will connect with, such as construction, plant growing and baking. You may also wish to take the opportunity to think of cross-curricular links to share examples.
